Title: The Game's Down Thread.
Post by: Zoan on January 05, 2011, 08:28:23 PM
Because the game is down, I figure we can keep all our angst and fretting to one thread. THIS THREAD IS IT. So to alleviate our boredom, I propose we just start hating on everyone and everything:

I sure hate those intelligent half-giant gemmers in Red Storm.

I like pushing people off the shield wall.

is it okay to make most of your characters of a single (IC-sensitive) race that is not human because you love playing them and can't possibly want to play anyone else? is that okay?

i LOVE PUSHING PEOPLE OFF THE SHIELD WALL

GIVE ME MY ARM BACK!!!!! ahh.

I love Arm and I love the people who made it and they can take their time. I just love this game and wish to shout my displeasure at not having it when i finally made an appointment to get some game on. i continue to shout and cry like little girl, and then go watch

THE FIVE DEADLY VENOMS

which is a wonderful and surprisingly complex and old martial arts movie.

you a martial arts or chinese fan like me go check it out its at walmart for real for real.

GIVE ME MY ARMS BACK ah hu huh huh huh huh huh hah. I WANTS IT

Turns out the problem is because of an account mishap with the ISP. They disconnected us instead of someone else across town. Give it about 24 hours or so to be restored. Sorry for the inconvenience. Blame the ignorance of the phone company.

If I were staff, I'd be asking for a free month of service from the ISP. 24 hours? Boneheads.

you guys wanna rate this from 1 to 10?

i like criticism. or don't read it. i hate poetry. i made this up today! yay!

-------------------------------------------------
skulls peering out from the sand,
half-buried in their mindless rest,
and colored orbs revolving
in the red and burnt-up sky,
and this is where water comes from,
cold-eyed templars that point at someone else,
always someone else,
and no one says a word.
tall red walls and the whispers
of the one section of town,
a thin film above the ground,
the dark tower,
their relationship to the land,
blood in every dream you have,
fire spirits devouring the world,
a long, grey film settling over everything--
and everyone---
and someone has poured water onto the dirt
and has lain down on their side,
holding sand in both hands and gazing at it with love.
rukkian
lowering your eyes,
wondering not,
suppressing small thoughts that get weaker over time as
your life gets more feeble and more estranged;
white robes passing by,
and then life resumes again.

and after all this you don't wonder and survive,
and the blood in your dreams slowly means nothing at all,
nothing is a surprise anymore,
and be glad they chose not to take your life as well.

"in my dream, the black moon unfurled like a shadowless flower,
and grew sharp-edged and a long, winding tail swept out
to grip the world in one fell move,
and an immense, film-dusted mouth with teeth the size of mountains
opened wide with a sound like a horribly sad and suicidal sigh,
and ate the world in one powerful thrust."

Reconnection of service can take up to 24 hours for all sorts of services, and I'm assuming that's what'll happen here.  Operating off that assumption, the game may be accessible at any time, actually.

Still though... this makes me glad I got tramadol when I went in for an abscessed tooth. It's leaving me able to sleep as much as I like. In the morning, I will be at a local college, registering for schooling - after that, I will be "poking the ginka" all morning.

Atonement RPI is a survivalist RPI mud that takes place on the moon, in the future. It's sci-fi. Aside from being harsh and an RPI, it's a lot different from Arm. They're far less withholding with information, for example. On their official wiki on the website they name some (most, all?) of the creatures in the wilds, how they hunt, whether they're poisoned, and so on. I like Arm's "find out IC" strategy a lot better, even if it can be frustrating as a newbie.

I do believe that our website documentation has a pretty exhaustive list of flora and fauna and some pertinent details.

And there's still a lot that aren't listed.  Atonement probably still has its secrets, despite a more thorough documentation.  Also, it has guns.  GUNS.  I can't play, though, because I had some account bug they're being slow to fix.  So I can't give a review.

Also, Cindy, I think you've gone insane.

There are some Arm creatures that aren't on there. Also, while Arm has documentation on fauna, it's mostly lore based things while Atonement's documentation is far more specific. For example, in Atonement they specifically state which creature has poison that stiffens it's prey, or what certain creatures eat, how they hunt, what times they're asleep/awake, and so on. Arm does that for a few of them, but even then, it's speculative, with things like, "It is believed that X preys on the large Y in the area." I don't think Arm documentation definitively says, "X eats Y's, so if you see Y's dead in Z manner, then it was eaten by an X."

I much prefer Arm's method, because it encourages rumors and uncertainty. While I'm sure there is a lot unlisted, things like the wiki entry for Atlas would have been so much cooler to find out through rumors or via RP rather than reading a wiki that says there's a giant robot there that kills people.

I don't think he was being serious about being hateful out of boredom, FYI.

Oh, whatever, we are all bored.

Yeah, we're all bored.  We're all frustrated our game is down.  We're all wanting to chokeslam some fools at an ISP who don't double check account details.

The difference is that most of us are being pleasant about it, and those of us who do know how to be a dick in an original and oft-times amusing (to most) fashion are specifically not doing it.

Why?

Because...

Not every place in the country/world is such a place that one can simply get another ISP.

As implied a couple times before, the ISP itself (more than likely) isn't related to the disconnects from before.

I haven't really been around the GDB as much as I would like this last year, or at least not as much as I would like to.
Life is so busy and usually when I sit down at the computer I barely have time to dedicate 100% to arm much less the discussion board, so so things I would like to say to get caught up.

1. Anyone who's character is considering faking their own death.... now would be a good time to disappear. ;)

2. Cyberpatrol:  How's your love/sex life these days?

3. I miss a lot of the GDB personalities that were around/around more when I first got hooked.

4. I love some of our new newbs to death.

4b. One in particular, I was their helper for the first PC they ever wrote (ARM was also their first mud).
This was a year or less ago.
I got to play with them for the first time ever recently, and their RP is so awesome, it makes me want to kick myself.
     (expect kudos soon)

5. I love my new writting/world-creation cohort!
You've got me so fired up about my current project, I might actually start writing some of it down soon!

6. You could never express in words exactly how awesome this community is, even the rotten apples... especially the rotten apples. :D

7. I still love Dwarves and Half-elves above all, but I have found myself playing mostly humans over the past year.  I don't think I've played more than one or two rangers over the past year! OMG! And no merchants at all.

8.  I don't get to play Arm as much as I would like.

9.  I play Arm more than I should.

10.  My gemmed dwarf viv was my favorite PC ever.  I heard he even had a <IC INFO> let by a <IC INFO> in the <IC INFO> after he died... damn I wish we could live as ghosts for a few days after we died to see how people react.  I would loved to have been there.

11. There is one guild that I just can't seem to keep alive for more than a couple days played and forget branching... maybe one day. :(

12. Awesome haiku, Cutthroat.

13. I miss Gage Gritshaw, he was the best Zalanthan ever.

14. Cindy... I'm sorry you can't play arm and that you have no Arms... how's that voice->print software working out for you?

15. Damn, I hate that I've missed every decently close APM since DragonCon two years ago... or was it three?

15b. I take that back... Sephiroto, Spacewars, Kronibas, and myself did get together for drinks a few weeks ago.
It was great to see you all again.

15c. If you've never been to an APM and you ever have the chance... take it, you won't regret it.

16. I made a PC for Atonment a while back... who here is the person that is on staff there that told me to give it a try?
     I don't think I ever even logged in. :(

17.  My wife is fussing at me to come to bed.... goodnight y'all. Good luck on the rez/new apps ;)

Don't look at me! I left when they started talking about that, to shield my poor ears. Not knowing and ambiguity is the best part about Arm.

I had hoped this was a joke.  Seriously?  This shit happened?

That makes me not even want to log in even if the game was up.

Fuck you, you fucking asshats.  Seriously, fuck you.

Since we're hating, I hate surviving atacks by creatures in the wastes and surviving, only to make it to the city gates which are currently closed, rest off the pain, then run out of water, only to happen across a poisoned skin with REALLY REALLY fast acting poison, especially after having survived all this and a sandstorm to boot.

Atonement will be opening today.

I will be there (for now).

Did anybody get through their character creation? They have a nifty take on custom items -- instead of lots of different items, they have generic items with lots of custom tags.  So instead of 'a bright, crimson blouse' the basic item is something like:  '<qualifier> <color> <material> <type of shirt>', with options for each field.  You can mix and match entire outfits in character creation that way.  Kinda cool, I think.

I hope the quality of RP will be a little bit higher than what I generally found on SoI, though, since I imagine those players will be the bulk of the playerbase.

i guess one couldn't hide spice in one's mouth hardcoded eh. in yer boots

i have this stick of weird chapstick... its thicker than three pieces of chalk and is a glittery sand brown and smells incredible and the name of it is Spice.

every time i use it i think of either Dune, Armageddon, or both.

what i wouldn't give to (IC sensitive action) with (ic-sensitive noun). spice is neat ;)

Saikun is sitting shotgun. Ginka is driving.

Ginka: So what you want to know?

Saikun: Well, spice is legal there, right?

Ginka: Yeah, it's legal. They've even got public places to smoke it.

Saikun: Those are spice dens?

Ginka: Yeah.

Saikun:That did it, man – I'm fuckin' goin', that's all there is to it.

Ginka: You'll dig it. But you know what the funniest thing about Tuluk is?

Saikun: What?

Ginka: It's the little differences. A lotta the same shit we got here in Nak, they got there, but there they're a little different.

Saikun: Examples?

Ginka (turning to Saikun): You know what they call Allanaki Flame Cheese in Tuluk?

Saikun: They don't call it Allanaki Flame Cheese?

Ginka: No, they got farty wines up there. They wouldn't know what the fuck Allanaki Flame was.

Saikun: What'd they call it?

Ginka: The Cheese Pyramid.

Saikun: The Cheese Pyramid. What do they call templars?

Ginka: A templar's a templar, but they call 'em FAITHFUL Lord Templar.

Ginka: I dunno, I didn't bring that shit up. But you know what they put on travel cakes in Tuluk instead of scrab guts?

Saikun: What?

Ginka: Jam.

Saikun: Krath damn.

Ginka: I seen 'em do it. And I don't mean a little bit on the side of the plate, they fuckin' drown 'em in it.

Although, the only bar in my town also has WiFi now. Could keep Ginka on the stool next to me.

I'd recommend, rather, that you study something in college which actually gives you good job prospects, especially assuming you're going to have to go into debt in order to go to college. Anything technical-math-science related has good potential. Things are just not like they were 20+ years ago, when getting a liberal arts education was relatively cheap and viable for work after college.

That's not to say that I think I wasted my time on my degree in anthropology, but that if I were to do it over again, I'd do it differently. And my kids are already on notice that their college education is going to be about getting tech/science degrees of some kind.

yeah, i don't have the option to do a science or math based degree--- i simply don't have the ability. and being a whiz kid in foreign language didn't help when my half-baked college had few options for such; and i had to change my major when they revamped english lit and made it about art movements rather than the human condition.

i understand the risks i'm taking, but i'm doing what i love doing. i know that if i got a job as a social worker i'm not going to make a lot of money, but its going to provide happiness that that money would have bought me anyway. i refuse to get a degree i despise and work a job i hate.

have to say tho, people in math and science degrees who love what they're doing, they got it made.

i'll be okay, i have low standards for myself. i want a Lincoln (beautiful cars, not high-end) and a trailer and some body jewelry and one of those old boxy tv sets from the 90s.

that and i'm a writer by soul. but getting that writing major seems like a waste of time to me. like getting a major in breathing.

i would also like to work in fast food as an alternative. given that no one's looking in the social sector for jobs, i'm not as worried as i should be.

*News Flash*
A terrible car accident occured today when a man driving with a CPU seatbelted into his vehicle lost control and crashed into a power pole. The CPU came loose of the seatbelt and was thrown through the windshield, slamming into a gas pump and causing a massive fire resulting in a fiery explosion. Fortunately, there were only minor injuries and no casualties.

The following day:

Authorities are investigating a strange burst of suicides all around the country around ten p.m. last night. All had left notes referring to something called ginka and an armageddon. Investigators believe it to be some sort of organized mass suicide but are still looking into further connections between these people.

Then again, I might just end up playing ADOM. That game is strangely addicting.

The problem, here, is that in general I don't think there are jobs open for "social workers." Especially not in this kind of economy. So you're going to have tens of thousands of dollars in debt and work fast-food? Why not just work fast-food and skip the debt?

Also, your plan sort of presupposes you're not going to get married and don't want kids. If you are thinking about someday procreating, or otherwise supporting any humans but yourself, well, fast-food just won't cut it as a career.

If you want to do something similar to social work, but which is in high demand, I'd recommend nursing. You can make a lot of money as a nurse, and it's a wonderful helping career. There is math and science involved, of course. However, just because you don't enjoy studying math or science doesn't mean you're not capable. (I don't really buy the "I don't have the ability" reasoning from most ARMers. We're an above-average group, intelligence-wise.)

science, i can wade through the easy stuff. math, i don't even try anymore; because when i used to try, and the only things besides studying math that i did for three days were eating and sleeping, i still made a 36 on my test, and was relegated to something easier.

i tried going for nursing for that very reason: i killed my gpa. that was the most horrible semester of my college life and made me realize that i do have limits in science.

i believe in myself where i have proven myself and not yet proven myself, but if my face hit the floor somewhere i tend to avoid whatever that was X)

ahh... i just really, want a job where i'm helping folks bottom-line, preferably an old folks home or red cross or something... and while i really do appreciate your comments i'm not going to go do something eight hours a day that makes me miserable.

i've heard rumor at my college that there are corporate climates seeking grads who understand human interaction (psychology, english lit, what have you) but that formal atmosphere makes me uncomfortable. and i'm too stubborn to change.

i do have an advantage. i'm learning me some chinese.

if i become bilingual and trilingual that's going to rock in many ways.

i wonder if my writing sucks.

i'm not considering it as a full-time career because writing stories is kind of my life.

i want someone to tell me whether my stories suck or not. /end derail

I'd suggest working as a CNA, then, or perhaps even becoming a physical therapy aide. Both do require some schooling, IIRC, but not so much as becoming a nurse or a physical or speech therapist (they don't pay as well either, of course--in California I'd guess the pay is in the $12 to 20 range, which at least is better than fast-food or retail). They are also very high-demand, typically. The work is hard but they are true helping professions.

Another thing you might consider is special education. There's not a lot of demand in the current economy for general teachers or teachers of English or social sciences, but I believe there's demand for special education teachers and aides. If you're able to become bilingual in a language which is important in your community (that would be Spanish around here, or perhaps Hmong), then that gives you a much better shot at a job. Language also helps a lot in healthcare.

With your affinity for languages, you might also think about the agriculture industry. In California, it's pretty common practice for anyone who works with farmworkers to be bilingual English-Spanish. Farming isn't technically a helping career, but when you are helping people get their work done and get paid so they can feed their families, I think that's pretty satisfying.

Not all corporations are alike. But for the most part, having worked a lot in corporations (I work at a genuinely huge one, been here for over 5 years and it's a great place to work), they're not really looking for "people who understand human interaction." They're looking for people with specific degrees and skillsets.

i have to add that i admire the usefulness of 100% of ur suggestions dude.

i have a little experience with down syndrome kids because i was removed from said horror math class to go help a class of about 11. most of them function well on their own and it changed my ideas of what people with the syndrome are like. i would embrace an opportunity to work with the slight minority of them who would need someone's help on a daily basis.

My husband once worked as a substitute aide for a community organization that provides this service in the schools. Perhaps there is an organization near you that is doing this sort of thing. IIRC, they didn't have a college degree requirement (though he does have one). Basically, he was on call to go in and be an aide for a day or two at a time to kids who had some serious needs. If he had stayed with them, eventually I'm sure he would have gotten a full-time placement doing the job.

You might also look into organizations near you which are "homes" for troubled kids, which have adult staff who provide safety and help with daily needs and so on. We have a couple of those around here. Again, you probably don't need a college degree, but you do probably need to be in reasonable physical shape, as the job infrequently involves doing a safe takedown of a kid who is out of control.

My basic message here, which has been wildly misinterpreted, is by all means do what you love: Just don't, for the good Lord's sake, go $40 to $100k in debt in order to make the same kind of money you could make while NOT going into debt.

Okay. actually, the schooling before nursing tryout was free. i had a scholarship, and i was one of two people who passed some sort of mega-test after taking an advanced writing course. poor girl was so much darn smarter than me; but she got pregnant. if i cut back, since i can't lose that mega-test grant until i graduate, i could just have this 6.5k borrowed for the rest of my college life and not have to get more for the next two years.

i'm about thirty pounds over the average healthy person, but i'm very physically frail, stupidly so. those jobs are not an option.

there should be an org near me since i've seen those workers before; and its local and not 30 miles away which is a bonus here. thanks for the idea. i would never have come up with that on my own.

for the going into debt part... i'm going to break cultural bread with you, this rather unnecessary education is a serious driving force in life for both me and my mother, who imprinted this notion in my heart at an early age from mother korea. its an honor to have a degree, and a source of pride and happiness after getting. before getting--- it is fun, a joy ride, something that you should probably be doing, and that side of the family is honestly not going to be happy if i quit now--- but i love learning too much for it to be a bother. its a problem that cannot exist for me.

/crazy asians

what i can't stand is the fact that my cousin finished high school, didn't go to college, is trying to become a rock star and that side of the family is hating on him. i dislike that. he is following his dream. i see nothing wrong with it. i wish him luck, he'll need it.

I'm going to agree with Gimf. on this one.  Unless you love a degree with limited prospects SO MUCH that you MUST pursue schooling in it, in a vocational-calling sort of way, I would not recommend taking it just to take it.

I was an English major in college, and luckily I did not have to pay my own way, but right out of college I had to work for minimum wage.  It was a document without value.  I really appreciate the generosity of my parents and I feel deeply enriched as a person, but at the same time, I have to consider whether or not it was worth it -- if I would have been better served investing that money and taking time to study on my own, at a much lower price, for instance.  Or working for four years, climbing up to lower management, and having a resume more formidable than most of those my age.

It all depends on what you want to do, but it's definitely non-trivial time and money considerations, so having a longwinded conversation and even more lengthy considerations right now, before you are committed, is probably very wise.

Re: college
Can't you pair just about any field of study with a business degree these days and end up with something useful?

Artists and writers can get into marketing pretty easily.  That's a profitable yet creative field.  Heck, smart marketing divisions/companies might want someone with a sociology background too.  A business degree/minor/focus is like a degree multiplier.  Same for computer programming/engineering.

Might want to look into that: combining (or dual majoring) sociology and business.

Dual majoring or major/minoring is actually quite a good idea, if you are driven.

for the going into debt part... i'm going to break cultural bread with you, this rather unnecessary education is a serious driving force in life for both me and my mother, who imprinted this notion in my heart at an early age from mother korea. its an honor to have a degree, and a source of pride and happiness after getting. before getting--- it is fun, a joy ride, something that you should probably be doing, and that side of the family is honestly not going to be happy if i quit now--- but i love learning too much for it to be a bother. its a problem that cannot exist for me.

/crazy asians

what i can't stand is the fact that my cousin finished high school, didn't go to college, is trying to become a rock star and that side of the family is hating on him. i dislike that. he is following his dream. i see nothing wrong with it. i wish him luck, he'll need it.

As you said, let's break cultural bread.   The generation (and maybe a generation or a half before that) that is approaching 20 - 30ish range was raised to think each block of education prepared one for the next step which eventually prepared one to go to college for four years at which time a mid-level entry job would be handed out.  That is, many followed school because of the money... not the education.  When they got out and found there was no magical "here's your new high-ranking employment" they became frustrated (mult that if they were 1st or 2nd generation to go beyond high school).   I guess what I'm saying is sadly it's a bit of a cultural thing for people to be a bit bitter when it comes to higher learning right now.

Secondly, give a few years for Tea Party to quiet down (they hate public servants like social workers) and you're going to find ample jobs open to you in the fields of social work and elderly care (Boomers are getting older!!  Some are enjoying being active seniors, others working to rebuild their nest eggs, some raising grand kids...  but pretty soon they'll join the rest homes)

Uh. I'm not "bitter" about higher learning. I went to college because I wanted to, not because I thought it would grant me a job, and studied something I enjoyed studying. I managed to get out of there with no debt (20 years ago exactly) with a degree from an extremely prestigious university, because I transferred from the local community college and my parents paid part and I worked the whole way through AND because it was, compared to what it costs today, insanely cheap. (I believe it was in the range of $3k per year in academic fees for me to attend UC Berkeley, at the time.)

But knowing what I know now (that I would be required to be the sole supporter of my family, also that I enjoy working with numbers), if I had it to do over again under the current conditions (poor job prospects, expensive higher education), I would do something very, very different. I might not go to college at all; and if I did go, I'd definitely choose to study something that would justify the cost and time.

IMO, the romanticization of the liberal arts degree and accompanying "bohemian" lifestyle is something that anyone who comes from a lower-middle-class or working-class background can't really afford; rather, it's an aping of the educational leisure of the upper classes and ultimately serves to keep the lower classes in our place (because we end up with a crapton of unnecessary debt and then have to go to work at the bottom rung of the corporate machine anyways). But heck, if your parents can afford to send you off to do something that's fundamentally a consumption of resources rather than production, and you wanna do it, then go for it.

Bottom line is companies (no matter how large or small,  no matter if the position to be filled is important or trivial) hire people.  And people often come in two sets:  those with job-skills and those with people skills (and a very few who manage to have both).   Hiring managers can teach job-skills  ;)

Had I done things differently, I would have taken more electives and fewer job-related courses.

There used to be a mud out there. It was all ascii mapped. You built forts, and turrets, and the whole game was pvp. There was a couple people running servers years ago, does anyone know this game/ know a server? Great time killer.

Edit: when I say "built forts" I mean you literally built walls of turrets a to keep people out, a weapon shop to make guns, an armor pace, a secret weapons lab, ect. all were represented on the map. And you could go pwn in real time.

I might do something productive and write a report to my clan imms, type up a few biographies, write an Armageddon-based story, draw a few characters, or edit a few logs to submit...

Then again, I might just end up playing ADOM. That game is strangely addicting.

Cutthroat, I'm in love with your haikus.

I have actually already done all of these.  V_V

i'm trying to write a pair of ARM stories. one's a soap opera he said she said and the other's going to be hack and slash and action.
btw did anyone see Spartacus? reminds me oddly of the allanak arena

I wrote the report. Now I just have 3-4 bios to write. I'll never run out of PCs to draw, it's just a matter of being interested enough.

I may actually be productive and do something not Armageddon related... But probably only after I've exhausted all the bio writing, planning, and drawing I can handle.

Where are your stories set, Cindy? I've done two Armageddon stories, but only one is up in original submissions. I would really like to turn a couple of my older PCs into Armageddon stories, and submit some of the stories that they created in game. Sometimes I feel torn between submitting a log of events and writing a story about it. I have yet to actually buckle down and write about said character, however.

I thought I was doing so well. Sure, I kept the broken Arm website tab up in the background just in case, but compared to some people I've been extremely well behaved. But when the website came up and all I could think was, "Ohgodohgodohgodohgod it's almost up!" I realized that I was just as far gone as everyone else.

I bet theres 25 people spamming "connect" right now, over and over.

All I know is that I'm going fucking crazy here. I work twelve hour shifts... Sometimes fourteen or fifteen depending on how busy we are. And taking shit from thirty bosses all day, and having damn near impossible deadlines drives me fucking crazy. All I want to do is come home to some goddamn Armageddon and live someone else's life for a few hours... Come on, Ginka, straighten your ass up.

That's fucking depressing to read. Not that I'm much different, which makes it even more depressing.

I don't think it's that depressing, life is hard, for most people, even those not found online. It's more like a small positive that people managed to find Armageddon, a place where their imagination, personality strengths and so on can be appreciated by peers. I see it less me hiding from what I have IRL and going to what IRL could never provide for me.
