If you want to see metrics on how we did last month, check it out here.

How have we done with voting?

TMS
In 31 days, we've gotten 1475 votes.  That's on the low end; we've supported about 30% higher than that easily in the last few months.  What's the cause?  Hey, it could be anything from vacation to boredom.  It only takes a few players to affect numbers in that fashion.
I'll round us up to 1500 as we'll probably hit that today.  1500 votes over 31 days amounts to 48.3 votes per day.
Broken down by person, that amounts to just a hair over about 24 players voting twice per day.  This is slightly better than what we had in a month with no voting drive whatsoever.  We were in 2nd place for a while, but drifted down to 5th.  In previous months, we've easily beaten all other games that have come to the table on TMS except Aardwolf.  Now, this isn't meant to bash any other games or anything.  We're all in this because we like our games.  However, even these other games are at lower voting totals than usual.  It seems to be a truth that it doesn't really matter how much you vote or how big your playerbase is--it matters how much you vote compared to other games and their voting.

At present, here are the rankings.

1.  Aardwolf.  3771 votes, 1407 site visits.
2.  Midkemia.  1896 votes, 607 site visits.
3.  Achaea.  1779 votes, 482 site visits.
4.  Discworld.  1570 votes, 461 site visits.
5.  Armageddon MUD.  1475 votes, 529 site visits.
6.  The Carrion Fields.  1240 votes, 353 site visits.
7.  Imperian.  1104 votes, 213 site visits.
8.  Lusternia.  904 votes, 167 site visits.
9.  DragonRealms.  899 votes, 378 site visits.
10.  Shattered Kingdoms.  792 votes, 241 site visits.

Now, another observation:  4 of these are IRE games.  That's all well and good, great for the company and great for their players.  However, their players can't vote for all IRE games (at least, not by keeping to the rules), and I doubt they're dishonest and would do that.  Even if they did, it would only raise the bar equally across all IRE games (which hasn't been the case; voting goes as it will with each game separately).  No, I don't think there's any foul play or bad stuff going on.  In the end, it's voting and ranking on a single website, and it's not even where we get most of our players (though we may get higher quality players from TMS).  We just haven't been voting as much as we have in the past.

Well, Nyr, what's your point?  Why even bring this up?
Even with a voting system that doesn't tell you when you've voted (and no opt-in reminders), we manage to stay in the top 10.  We've been #2 for several months purely on word-of-mouth and GDB reminders.  We've been beating other games that may be free to play, but they have a payment element involved.  Cool, great for them, we don't do that kind of thing though. In fact, even if their collective playerbases did focus on one game's votes, they would lose rankings in all other games.  Again, I doubt they'd do that, that'd be a little silly, but the point remains that the people voting for their games on TMS are doing so in a fair manner.

These other games have more players than we do!
So?

So they can easily outvote us!
Why haven't they?  If they could easily outvote us, they would have done so.  They still might do so.  They're outvoting us now because we're not really voting that much this month.  Until they do consistently beat us on their own voting, we've got the following metrics.

Here's how far off we were this month from #2:
6 players voting twice per day every day in addition to our current votes. In other words, if we'd had 7 more players voting every day this past month, we'd be number 2.

Here's how far off we were this month from #1:
36 players voting twice per day every day in addition to our current votes.  In other words, if we'd had 37 more players voting every day this past month, we'd be number 1.

Well, we couldn't take #1.  That's a pretty tall order, getting 37 more players twice per month to vote.
It may be a tall order to get 37 more players to vote twice per month, but we do have those players.

Players on at peak during the HRPT:  170
Let's say that half of these players voted twice per day, every day, for the next month.  That would be 85 x 2 x 31 = 5270 votes.  That would take #1 easily, or force a competition for it at least.
Let's say that this half (85) only voted once per day.  We'd have 2635 votes.  Historically, that's enough to take and keep #2 by a substantial margin, and would force all other games to have to compete with that as the new standard.

We have the playerbase to compete well on TMS. Let's pick it back up starting tonight at midnight!

TMC

Well, hard to argue with #1.  We're there.
1. Armageddon -- 899
2. Aardwolf  -- 840
3. Dark and Shattered Lands (DSL) -- 446
4. SlothMUD -- 394
5. Forgotten Kingdoms -- 376
6. New Moon -- 299
7. AVATAR Mud -- 279
8. BatMUD -- 239
9. MULTI MUD! -- 218
10. Lands of Redemption -- 210

Huh.  I only see one game from TMS that we compete with here, and we've managed to keep a lead over that game.  I imagine those other games do not see a need to push votes on TMC and instead spend money on ad dollars.

899 votes over 31 days is about 900 votes, so I'll round it off and assume no more votes.  To vote on TMC you need to have an account, so we know for a fact that about 30 players have voted consistently over the past month for us on TMC (1 vote per day).  Funnily enough, if we doubled that, we'd be in 3rd place right now on TMS.  Looks like TMC is going to go through some changes (new administrator?) so I'd keep an eye on that.

I'll post a reminder again tonight around 11 or so, and will be stickying this post at that point.  Remember again that the first week or so of voting is pivotal!

Ok had to wait twelve hours it was actually more than that. But that's two votes on TMS and one on TMC for me today. We are barely at 2nd place people by ONE vote. Come on vote vote vote.

We're at 30 x 2 votes for the day so far.  To break 2k for the month, we need slightly over 32 x 2 votes per day, each day.  Higher than that means less work for us later in the month and we get to relax!

Also, TMC is just as important if not more important.  Our retention stuff from last month shows that 50% of our June players that are still playing now were from TMC.

Nyr,

Might want to attempt what Aardwolf and Achaea do. They have a very -visible- reminder when you enter their games. I noticed Arm has none. Don't know if it helps, but it might.

Look at my version. No one can miss that. Might -seem- redundant but I'm truing to draw attention to it as quickly as I can before the person scans throught the page. You could also switch the box that says Diku Team, put Diku Team on top, alter the box to have a similar title such as VOTE ARMAGEDDON and then the voting info. This is because if the person attempts to quickly scroll through the last thing <immediately> after the Room Description on top will be VOTE FOR ARMAGEDDON. Hard to miss when you draw attention like that. And that is what Aard and Achaea do. Might as well play the same game.

I would find it helpful to have it MASSIVE across the top of the GDB.

Also...

"I have seen him show most of the attributes one expects of a noble: courtesy, kindness, and honor.  I would also say he is one of the most bloodthirsty bastards I have ever met."

That was fast! Ten hours ago, we were five votes ahead of fifth, now we're seventy behind.

Yeah and now we're 115 behind fourth. Come on people vote.

Probably less than 10% of the players actually vote.

Let's start forcing people to vote or else they can't connect to the game.

It's Armageddon, c'mon! You think they'll stop playing if we do that? Hahahahahahahahah.. CRACKAGEDDON CRACKAGEDDON!

I tried to check in at Mudconnector just now. As mentioned previously, the only way I ever check on the community forums and news on TMS and TMC, is by clicking the vote button. I got a 404 error. So I typed the URL for the main mudconnector page in on my browser (I don't even have it bookmarked) and was able to access the main page. When I tried to click on "reviews" I got another 404 error. But Andy (Icculus, the owner) posted in his news section, that he's in the process of porting the old community forum onto SMF boards, so that might be the problem.

Is anyone else erroring out when trying to vote on Mudconnector?

Nyr,

Is this 620 different people viewing? Because I view this post sometimes several times a day, but can only vote twice a day for TMS and once a day for TMC. I like TMC because it tells you when you've already voted. TMS is still confusing to me because there's no way of really knowing if your click counted as a vote or not.

Just a thought, for TMS. But I feel like you should put a symbol next to the name, much like Aardwolf and Achaea. Feel like we could use the Armageddon symbol on the homepage and it'd just help to stand out more.

Despite that, we're halfway through the month and we have 3 new players at more than 24 hours played each (still active), all referred by friends.  The next several (active, playing, and more than 10 hours played) are from TMC, with one from TMS.  Not a definitive thing by any means, but it's definitely good to see.

We're at 206 new accounts for the month.

I literally cannot get my head around the number of new accounts we get each month and then how low the retention is in comparison. We should have like 300 players on at any given time! Omg that would be so cool. 0.o

Not really.

Imagine the spam. I think about 150 at any given time, then around 300 for rpt's is the most I'd want to see.

That's only when it's condensed to one area. A high population would just mean more places would be populated with PC's, I'm thinking even distribution, clans all nice and filled, more opportunity for more clans etc etc.

Okay now - imagine an RPT - a bard performance in Tuluk, where everyone in Tuluk is invited. Now imagine Kadius offering a silk outfit for the winner - and Salarr offering a new bow for the first runner-up, and Kurac offering a new pipe filled with a pinch of kemen for the second runner-up. So that means all three major GMHs will be there. And their hunters, and would-be bards, and so will all the aides of all the chosen houses, and the chosens, and the Akai Sjir, and the independents, and the partisans.

Imagine that, when there are only 80 players logged in, total, in the entire game.

Now - imagine that, when there are 300 players logged in.

I'm thinking - I really don't want to have to imagine that. It would be a nightmare. And things like that would just simply not be planned anymore, because of the spam alone, let alone trying to actually coordinate playing times with literally dozens of participants.
Talia said: Notice to all: Do not mess with Lizzie's GDB. She will cut you.
Delirium said: Notice to all: do not mess with Lizzie's soap. She will cut you.

I can see what you're saying.  Events wouldn't scale up exactly as they do now.  But I definitely think there wouldn't be events in which "every single person in the city" is invited anymore.  It wouldn't be possible, so it wouldn't happen.  Events would be guestlisted and planned out and organized more carefully.  More events could take place at once.  The HRPT would not be possible anymore as we know it either - it would have to be done differently, with multiple events in separate locations.  I do think it would work itself out as far as roleplay goes, more or less.

I'd be more concerned about code scaling (resources and combat in particular) and staff/clan scaling.

It's a cool topic to explore, though - how would Armageddon scale up with a larger player base.

Give a damn about the spam. We could actually get away with things like the Aubertorium(sp) place in Allanak being used often, like it is supposed to be. The Oashi Tavern, too ... the Gaj actually being a place for riff raff and upper class commoners being able to find interaction in Red's Retreat, a place they would actually go.

Yeh, we could use 300+ players.

I don't think being wary of 300 players online is a valid reason to not vote. What we've gotten when we do vote regularly and often are bumps of about 10-20 players on at peak times. Which I think does make a big difference. It's the difference between being alone in a tavern all day, and actually having someone to do things with.

So, vote. There's no excuse for us to be only 26 votes ahead on TMC when we've had leads of hundreds of votes before.

She'll probably bring you other stuff too like uh.... I don't know, ponies? Extremely difficult suduko puzzles which require two people's constant attention to get solved in under three hours? Hot mac and cheese? A live performance of 300?

Or.... OR---

Imagine having an average of 200-300 people in the game every day during the times before and after peak. Imagine the playerbase and their individual interests becoming so large that a new city is built, a new village is built, an existing village is made a spawn point and upgraded to pc sustainability, we get a -real- prison in Allanak, one where prisoners interact with each other in both watched and lawless areas, where escape is so severely punished that 70% of the imprisoned aren't always actively attempting to pull it off--- well, I mean, there's other benefits--- I'm just thinking of a pc prison at the moment.

Imagine, all this could be YOURS!

Yiss yiss yiss!!!  I am of the opinion -- and maybe I've gone on this rant before -- that Arm has loads of potential that can't be fully realized until >200 players online becomes a fairly regular thing.  It won't be a linear benefit, but exponential.  4x more players won't just make a 4x better game, it will be 10x, 20x, 100x better!

Add to all the above: a world where the crowded taverns really are crowded almost all the time.  Where the cities really feel like cities, and not like tiny villages where everyone has their noses stuck in everyone else's business. Where a petty thief or raider is easily lost in the crowd and doesn't trigger a full city manhunt because they lifted a dagger that one time.  Where there really is a high demand for House employment and leaders have their pick of prospects. Where there are sizeable populations of city elves with their own thriving nefarious subcultures.  Where the OOC time of day doesn't appreciably alter your chances of running into a PC templar or of a burglar getting spotted lurking in an apartment building.  Where players don't have to rationalize breaking character because they "just want some interaction," since there will be PCs in their appropriate social circle.  Where the glass ceiling is raised because clans are large enough to support a couple PC red robes or Lieutenants or other high ranking positions.

It's a reachable goal. There are billions of people in the world, and there must be at least a few thousand that would enjoy this game given the chance.  If we get there, the game up to that point will look like a dress rehearsal.
