Who remembers the old GDB?

It took forever to load some of the pages...back when almost everybody playing was on dial up.

And the game noticably lagged, when you 'reloaded' the page.

Well.  Guess what?  It's still there:

I think these links should be kept someplace safe.  Perhaps, in the 'Archive' area, an immortal can make a 'sticky' and include each of these links.   Eh?  Eh?

P.S.  I just spent the last 3 hours going over some of the pages.  Heh.  They were fun times.

P.P.S.  Don't be an idiot and start replying to threads that nobody will read.  Just don't.

Armageddon is best when it's actually harsh and brutal, not when we're only pretending that it is.

I do!  I do!

I love the old GDB.  Yes, it was slow, and clumsy and kind of ugly.  But I'd take it all back in a minute to get threading.  You could easily follow the different branches of a discussion, and instantly spot a subthread that had gone away from the main discussion.  There was no worry about foolish derailments, because the derailment portion was in it's own subthread, so it was easy for people who only wanted to read "serious" discussion to avoid silly  bits.  Every post could be titled, and the title actually mattered!  I was starting to get pretty good with titles.  And you could choose keywords, which had no function whatsoever, but were still fun.  You could have N/T posts, and then put text in them anyway!  Ah, the good old days.

Where have all the Boxmen gone?

I think some remember it like this:

Bad Descriptions
Description

He looks at you and laughs! You know you couldn't defeat him in a thousand years, so you might as well give him all your possessions now. This is not a kind soul, he'd sell his mother for table scraps, and likes to fornicate with small farm animals.

Reasons for Rejection

   * Do not look at people in your desc. You might not be able to see who is looking at you.
   * Do not tell people what they are thinking/should do. Each player can make up their own mind.
   * Habits like enjoying the fruits of small farm animals is not something that can be identified merely by looking at a person, so it should not be included.

Description

Standing before you is a large, dwarven warrior. He has many battle-scars which line his entire body, showing evidence of his numerous battles and valor. About his robust body, is a large jerkin made from leather hide and chitin plates. He wears a bright-red belt of some dyed leather, and hanging from it are several pouches. He has a pair of fine boots, which he wears upon his feet proudly, and across his shoulder is slung a great bow.

Reasons for Rejection

   * This is an equipment list, not a description. Items in descriptions can not be stolen, traded, sold, etc, thus should not be included often in descriptions.

Description

A tall human is standing before you, with hair the color of obsidian, and cut at the base of the neck. Two dark eyes peer out from beneath his brow and his lips mantain a state of perpetual scowl. His left arm ends abruptly at the wrist, only a stub remaining where a hand once was. He nods at you slowly and says, "Name's Ash, Housewares."

Reasons for Rejection

   * Do not perform actions in your description. I doubt you'd be nodding constantly (like, when you're asleep).
   * Do not refer to other people (see example 1).
   * Do not give out your name, since it wouldn't be apparant by merely looking at a person.
   * There is only one Ash, and impersonaters aren't allowed.

I do. I miss subthreading, also.
This new fandangled one has grown on me, though, I admit. With the obvious exception of the smileys.

I like the new one quite a bit more, now that I'm used to it.

I liked the old one way better.  Mainly because people didn't post as much on it.  You could go for days without a single new post.

Ahh, those were the days.

I miss the threading - seems a common theme.  I like individual clan boards now, though.

Nice to know the board is still around, though.

Someone should the excellent poems and songs of Thanasa on the Original Submissions page -

Hah, you and me both.  I griped and moaned the whole time we were changing, but now that I'm used to this, I can't see things without it.

I think the reason for the change was because so many people WERE posting on it. Sure, back in the old, old days you may have been able to go a day without a post. But towards the end (once I joined it  ) people were posting a ton.
