Fantasy Char Gen.

Hello hello, folks.

I think I'm going to undertake a small project and I welcome you all to participate and help out. The project has absolutely no bearing on reality. So it will not result in anything tangible, except a bit of data and some whimsy.

The project is simple. Let's create a fantasy character generation based on point by for skills and stats.

What we oughta do is take currently available templates and assign point price on the skills and traits they have. All to establish a loose maximum point budget that each character has. Then decide on the cost each skill, ability (wilderness quit/faster Stam Regen/etc), and stat boost.

Once we have that figured out. I'll welcome you all to create a template/sdesc/bio/concept and pm it to me.

The reason why I think we should pm is to prevent one posted char concept to affect someone elses.

We'll find out how workable the system is. We'll find out if we truly do manage to be 100% cookie cutter. Etc.

I imagine the process of ironing out the system would be collaborative in nature.

The loose idea that I've been considering is that certain skills cannot reach master unless they branch out from other skills.

So let's say if max point budget is 100.  And you pick backstab master, the cost is 25. And piercing weapons master is 25.

But if you go piercing master (25) and make it branch backstab master. Price will be 10 pts cheaper. Etc etc.

Very loose idea. Let's see if people are interested in this flight of fancy.

What if I pick...

Advanced Backstab?

Is that worth 1/5th of 25 points?  Or is it worth less?

Or if I pick journeyman sneak?

Is it split like..
Journeyman Sneak - 10
Advanced Sneak - 15
Master Sneak - 20

Or
Journeyman Sneak - 10
Advanced Sneak - 13
Master Sneak - 25
Like in some logarithmic scale?

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

I would suggest not asking 'what if'. There is no authority. It's a communal whimsy. Make a suggestion. When I'll get home. I'll write up a suggestion and offer it for you guys. I just figured you'd be interested to contemplate it ahead of time. We'll come up with a perfect char gen settings together and hopefully have some fun.

One thing that's difficult about assigning simple point values, is that some skills make other skills more or less useful.

Preliminary craft skills like tanning are better if you have leatherworking for instance. Sneak is better if you have hide to go with it. Direction sense is usually less useful without ride.

Similarly, some skills obviate the need for other skills. If you have chopping you don't need slashing as much. If you have dual-wield, you don't need two-handed.

Given that you'd probably want each skill to give a modifier to the cost of other skills. If a skill improves another skill, it increases its cost. If a skill makes another skill less useful then it lowers its cost.

I do like the idea of increasing values of skills as max rank improves.

One issue is that some skills are also more useful at higher levels then lower levels.

There is a big difference between master backstab and low master backstab, one is much more useful then the other. Where as journeyman and apprentice backstab are both equally useless.

For a point system to work, some skills would need to require more points as they approach master.
