Kids these days have it so easy.

This is a thread where we talk about how awesome things are now and how far things have come since we first started playing.

For example:

I remember when you could still "hit" your mount instead of "hitch" it and have it go apeshit on you and kill you in the street or have the soldiers come in to slaughter it before your weeping eyes.

I remember when walking through the gates of Allanak with spice on you was a guaranteed death sentence. You didn't even get the option to maybe get drug off to jail. That was it. Guaranteed.

The young daughter has been filled.

I remember when soldiers didn't have a draw or subdue delay when they attempted subdue or drew their swords and attacked so this is the sort of thing you saw before you died:

The human soldier sheathes a jade-emblazoned, obsidian longsword.
The human soldier sheathes a jade-emblazoned, obsidian shortsword.
The human soldier attempts to grab you, but you wrestle away.
The human soldier shouts, in sirihish:
    "Militia! A criminal, here!"
The human soldier draws a jade-emblazoned, obsidian longsword.
The human soldier draws a jade-emblazoned, obsidian shortsword.
The human soldier solidly slashes your body.
The human soldier pierces your body.
The human soldier sheathes a jade-emblazoned, obsidian longsword.
The human soldier sheathes a jade-emblazoned, obsidian shortsword.
The human soldier shouts, in sirihish:
"In the name of the Highlord!"
The human soldier draws a jade-emblazoned, obsidian longsword.
The human soldier draws a jade-emblazoned, obsidian shortsword.
The human soldier slashes at you, but you dodge out of the way.
The human soldier solidly pierces your body.
The human soldier swiftly dodges your slash.
The human soldier parries your attack.
The human soldier slashes your hand.
The human soldier solidly pierces your body.
The human soldier swiftly dodges your slash.
The human soldier swiftly dodges your slash.
The bronzed, squinty-eyed half-giant has arrived from the north.
The bronzed, squinty-eyed half-giant shouts, in sirihish:
    "To the Highlord's Glory!"
The bronzed, squinty-eyed half-giant hits at you, but you dodge out of the way.
You deftly parry the bronzed, squinty-eyed half-giant's attack.
The human soldier solidly slashes your body.
The human soldier solidly pierces your body.
The human soldier's kick at you is absorbed by your pants.

flee
PANIC! You couldn't escape!

The human soldier slashes you very hard on your hand.
The human soldier viciously pierces you on your head.
Your vision goes black.

Welcome to Armageddon!
Child, child, if you come to this doomed house, what is to save you?

A voice whispers, "Read the tales upon the walls."

I remember logging in to an 'outdoor' room inside a city, and being unable to see.

I remember not being able to leave because I hadn't picked enough cotton.

I remember not being able to know my general skill level, and had to continuously track my fails to have a vague idea.

I remember curing poisons by poisoning myself with a less-annoying poison.

I remember the days of half-giant subdue/kills, and being poisoned then put to sleep so I couldn't ever wake up.

I remember being in outdoor adventure groups with bored High Templars and not understanding why it was so cool THEY were taking us out.

I remember not being able to make a living in Red Storm without a particular character set of skills.

.... I remember hulking green gith.

Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

I remember my elven burglar with 200 stamina.

I remember Tuluki elementalist temples.

I remember playable halflings and mantis. Never bothered to try mantis and I regret it deeply now :(

I remember cursing  the gods in a thousand languages because I had to figure out something to do with half of my weekend  because the game was down.

I remember  a certain bard NPC that you can pay to play songs... And spam the shit out of everybody in the room.
Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

Stop being shitty to each other.

I remember when you would follow your leader over deadly falls. :)

I remember when a drawn curtain was as good as a rusty gate for keeping sneakies out of a room.
The neat, clean-shaven man sends you a telepathic message:

New climb change. I should link it to you but I'm lazy.  8)
I ruin immershunz.

I remember when pitiful noobish rangers were the only (?) ones that could lead their storm blinded brethren home.

I remember fucking hating Saturday downtime. Bastards.

I also remember reel-lock. :(
We were somewhere near the Shield Wall, on the edge of the Red Desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

There used to be this one PC who used to just rage-slay people in that bar in Luir's.  One guy he killed was AFK.

I remember when it was impossible to outrun NPCs once they were after you. Unless you knew the trick for throwing them off, they'd literally chase you until your mount couldn't run another step, then chase *you* until you couldn't run another step, then it would be over. They absolutely would not stop, ever, until you were dead.

I remember when fighting two NPCs was ok, but as soon as it was three, your PC was doomed, no matter how strong.

I remember the days before the 'defense nerf', where warrior on warrior fights would be an endless series of parries with the very, very occasional hit.

I remember when it was possible to improve a weapon skill to its full extent without playing like a twink.

I remember when shields didn't block blows, they'd just absorb some of the damage like other armor. Everyone dual wielded back then.

I remember being a half-elf cotton picker in Tuluk, spending my nights at the Kadian bar before it closed.

I remember when the volcano was there, and I climbed it. The environment was so poisonous I almost didn't make it down.

I remember when there was no volcano and the area wasn't very good for my grebbing characters yet.

I remember luirs being nothing more then a tavern surrounded by ruins.

I remember dying of thirst in the cotton fields.

Saturday downtime probably saved my college degree.  I did like all my paper writing and programming projects on Saturday.   :D

I remember when the wilderness outside Allanak was REALLY dangerous.  Like, you were almost guaranteed to run into a drov beetle or gith raiding party.  You'd hire a Byn escort just to go to Luirs', and good odds you'd lose a Runner on the way because mobs could attack instantaneously back then.

I remember some truly mean and terrifying templars.  Seeing "<Kishime> has arrived from the north." made the hair stand up on the back of my neck IRL, even when my character hadn't done anything wrong.

I remember when gith walked the streets of Red storm like normal people

I remember the Gan-zian market in the Rinth being the coolest place in the world

I remember npc elves on the east side of the rinth wearing bronze necklaces

I remember when magik was scary as shit, and sorcerers made you crap your pants

I remember when Halaster left the room everyones head exploded!

I remember Mansa

I remember playing a pick pocket who stole so many weapons that when he was jailed they couldn't take them all off of me, and after being thrown into the arena (thinking I was unarmed) proceeded to pull them out of his ass as well as explosives.  They were not as amused as I was...

I remember explosives!  Hmmm whats this? a closed pack left in the middle of the street?  Whats the hurt in taking a peek right?

I remember when Merchants Inn was the epicenter of the world (unless you were an elf, then you just threw things in there at people)

I remember Mal Krian

I remember sneaking into the templar quarters, then robbing the barracks blind, then stealing the key off the jail guard only to unlock the door and sneak -into- jail.  (Where he would then proceed to throw me back outside the templars quarters hense I was not "wanted" that was the way out)  That is why all the gate guards now WEAR their keys instead of holding them in their inventory.... you're welcome.
The glowing Nessalin Nebula flickers eternally overhead.
This Angers The Shade of Nessalin.

Daily game crashes.  15% of the time you'd loose your stuff.  You'd have to write in to the email address with a list of the stuff you wanted replaced.

Like, you were really expected to remember all of it.

I REMEMBER DARGAN AND THE HUNTER'S GUILD. I REMEMBER.

Yeah crash storms. I remember those being regular.

I have a couple characters that are not on my account, because I didn't have them 'descended' from my other characters before the accounts were put in.

You kids!

Yep. Those were the days when you might see:

Welcome to Armageddon

Eh, it wasn't usually entire raiding parties right around the city, but do you guys remember the -uber- gith?  Like...super super harsh and badass?.  Spiders were always around.  Lone gith were relatively common.  There were no chalton to hunt.  The lowest peg on the totem pole was scrab, unless you waited and got scan up first for jozhal.

They made the area surrounding the cities relatively uber-safe.

I remember things being entirely different from how they seem now. I remember that sense of newness you get when unwrapping a plastic-reeking nintendo cartridge. I remember when I actually trusted people, right off the bat, to know more than me.
