No-Tell Motel

With the changes being made to apts in Allanak, I thought it would be an appropriate time to discuss the possibility of something like the No-Tell Motel.

Simply put, it's a building with rentable rooms. Or an "Inn" (though that word has a very un-Zalanthany feel to me.) These would function very similarly to the back room at a bar. You pay the rent (50 sid or whatever), you're escorted in, and you can't get back in when you leave without re-renting. The No-Tell Motel could be a little more along the lines of an apartment, where you would rent a room then be given a key and/or escorted back, and would have to return the key to leave. This would allow the rooms to be snuck into / picked open just as easily, if not more easily, than the average apartment. There would only be a few of these rooms available, and they would be no-save, no-quit so that people can't log out in them, or use them as storage or whatever.

For many people apartments just aren't all that practical - maybe you're in a clan which already offers more secure storage, or you simply don't have that much stuff to begin with. However, you still occasionally have need for the benefits an apartment offers - a safe(ish) place to regen health after a hunt has gone bad, a safe(ish) place to go mudsex / kill prostitutes, a safe(ish) place to have a private meeting, or a safe(ish) place to lay low for a short while. This would solve those short term problems well. They would have a cost, so a player wouldn't be able to use them constantly without incurring a high personal cost. They would be no safer from burglars and the lot than apartments. (If the rent code operated similar to apartments, a mugger could potentially see which rooms are occupied / vacant, thus making them even LESS safe than apartments.) They wouldn't offer safe log outs / store rooms for goods, as anything left behind would disappear on reboot, or be scooped up by the next renter. You COULD go linkdead in it, but I doubt anyone would WANT to because of the aforementioned security problems...

What are your thoughts? Is this a feasible and/or good idea?

Filthy joke suggestion: Since it'll probably be used by mud sexers more than anyone else, we could name it the "Glad-He-Ate-Her and the Gash." Stay classy gdb...

There are a lot of rooms in Allanak that can serve this purpose already, I think.
All the world will be your enemy. When they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.

I'd be in favor of this.

While there is the rented room in the Gaj and other semi-private places around and about Allanak, but nothing quite... There, I guess, when compared to OP's idea.

I like that it's not 100% secure like the rentable Gaj room, and I like that it's more secure than napping in an abandoned building.

Plas wan.

I DO like killing prostitutes.

Vennant doesn't appear to age because he serves drinks at the speed of light. Now you know why there's no delay on the buy code in the Gaj.

Not against the idea in principle though.
Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

I dig this.

I'm always for new content, I'm just sayin there are some underutilized rooms in Allanak that can serve this purpose pretty well.

I'll explain. People seem to really like adding elements of romance and intimacy in their rp. So, they rent apartments together. Or they have secret meetings and need privacy. And they log out  in in those apartments, and what with one thing and another it may be easier to stay there and way the people they need, or sort their stuff, or inventory what was robbed. And they spend an increasing amount of dead time in those apartments.

Short term privacy puts them back into the population more quickly.

I think this is a fantastic idea. It fits very well between random semi-private areas and full on apartments. In Allanak, at least, I always felt a little weird using some of the semi-private rooms. Sometimes the descriptions make me think someone may actually be living there, and it feels weird to just walk in and use it for a drug deal, murder, or whatever. Some of my characters don't care. But for the rest of my characters, the idea from the OP would be absolutely perfect.

But isn't bandwagon a proper term since there are wagons in Zalanthas?

I don't know, I feel like there are a ton of rooms that serve this purpose (very unsecure, very unsafe to quit in, not entirely private).

In fact, I would say that adding even more rooms (that have a cost) would see the playerbase underutilizing such an addition to the game. That would be my two sids, though, and somebody is free to counter at any time.

I'd like to see optimization of the current situation before inn rooms go in but that doesn't mean the idea isn't gold.

There's a difference between a rental and a room too let. Just like the back room of the Gaj, you can only use it for a while, you can't quit in there. A table, a cot and get the fuck out after your your trist with the elf.  If my noble's aide has a side piece she's keeping quiet she sure as hell won't be taking them home if her primary piece of ass wants her faithful. She'll be renting a room and reassuring her dumpling it was just a meeting.

Agreed... but those rooms aren't actually private. Almost all of us know about most of them. And, as someone said, half of them feel a bit too 'lived in' for most peoples tastes. Who honestly sleeps off an injury or has sex in a curtained booth, an abandoned building, someone else's house, an alley, a balcony, or what is basically some other homeless dudes cardboard box? I usually feel like a bit twinkish about using these areas, when I have to resort to it.

Additionally, my experience with these areas is that the AOD patrols them and looks upon anyone in them with great suspicion. Hell, I know I have when I've played militia. If I've got the black to spare, I really don't want to be shaken down when I'm trying to nap off a scrab wound.

The areas I'm suggesting wouldn't detract from the availability of free places in any way. And they wouldn't exactly be safe either. Every player would know that THAT's the place to go to find victims to rob, or info about who's fucking / meeting with who. If I were playing a mugger, I could just hide in that room and watch who's coming or going. Depending on whether they went in injured, alone, or in a pair I could quickly surmise whether they'll be sleeping, psiing (low on stun), or nekid.

Now, if they were put in a semi-public room, such as off of the dormatories in the Gaj, you'd reduce the likeliness of an assassin frenzy, but not the possibility. If you had the black to spare, you could sleep a bit more soundly and mudsex a bit more intimately without having to be tied to those damned apartments.
