demons

With all religion having been squashed by kings and what not, what is a Demon on Zalanthas?
Im only asking as I was looking at a helm l-desc and it said " has been carved to resemble the image of a howling demon." . I searched and didn't find anything here.

Demons exist in Zalanthan lore... beyond that, you would have to find out IC. :)

Without getting into exactly what zalanthan demons are, in general I think they'd be revered as much as any other "baddie" out there.  Much like mekillots/wyverns/silt horror/bahamets/any other dangerous beast.  There are even "dragon" images on items.  I don't think just having images of powerful beings would invoke the wrath of a city state templar (but they might use it as an excuse, even though they don't need excuses its more fun).

As for religion, it does flourish in the desert among the tribes and various groups.  Some of those groups might consider Utep and Tek to be demons/monsters/etc.  Generally "demons" would be considered general monsters of a supernatural nature, but it's entirely possible/likely that some people worship them.

Generally things that are supernatural. To be honest it never appeared as a religious things to me, demons have been around in folklore since day one around here too.

I can tell you that in some areas of Arm, religion is very active. Demons too maybe. Dunno. It's definitely one of those.. Find out IG things..
Czar of City Elves.

There are many things that can be considered demons in zalanthas. There's plenty of folklore that also includes things such as relious heads and the like...it all depends on the view and culture you are in.
Respect. Responsibility. Compassion.

I wouldn't say religion has been squashed by kings so much as repurposed by kings.

It's been my personal experience when playing a character in the south, that anything "demon" like or "demonic" has to do with magick and it's ilk, not so much anything relating to religion.  It's supernatural but not in the sense that it's tied into a god or religious mythos.

Let me see if I can bring up an example...

It's not as common anymore, but some years ago it was fashionable for PCs to reference the "Hell-Pits" of Suk-Krath.  It was during a time when superstition and supernatural things were more commonly referenced, though actual displays and knowledge of magic beyond extreme generalities and fifth-hand knowledge was considered taboo and indications that you had an unhealthy interest in the stuff and might even be a magicker yourself.

Nothing "demonic" was attributed to these "Hell-Pits."  They were considered an actual place that was too terrible to even form ideas of what might be in there beyond fire, torment and maybe shadowy thoughts of horrible, unearthly things that might be there; a thought you never took much time to ponder as it was too, too terrible and close to magick.  This time in the game, magickers were more open about discussing their stuff in public and a commoner would often hear the Hell-Pits referenced.  You did NOT think about it, and you would notify your local templar of the filthy stuff being openly spoken of by the gemmed.

I've heard "demon-beetles" and "drov-beetles" before, IG.  Generally, when speaking about those big black beetles that roam the south-lands.  As an adjective, "demon" and "demonic" can be used..but it's not OOCly fashionable, as its related to something supernatural and a commoner on Zalanthas desperately doesn't want to be associated with such in any way shape or form.  At least, not in public.

I would say that anything made manifest as the stuff of a PC's nightmares would be considered a "Zalanthan Demon" by said PC and other commoners.  The more horrible, unknown/unseen and supernatural it might be, the closer it is.

If you are asking what a demon IS, specifically speaking, I'd really choose to think of them as a race, like elves, or dwarves, or humans. They have no religious application for any sane person. If you were wondering what that demon looks like on that carving, I'd choose to assume that it's a Diablo-style demon. Unless otherwise noted, it's safe to assume that any artistic reference to a demon is Diablosque.

I always thought of zalanthan demons as looking sort of like kyloris, but not as thin, and with a really evil stare. The hardest thing about some of these descriptions is being able to translate the text to an image in your head.

I'd think of that as a tad extreme, but only very barely .... actually, on second thought, yes. Yes, absolutely. You're right. Do as the Gunner says.

FYI, I would really appreciate it if you stopped posting pictures of my character.
Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

Stop being shitty to each other.

I want to say I remember there being an issue with the staff from years ago using demons on a pretty regular basis in RPT's and what not.

Then, after much demon-use, a rule was put in (half jokingly) by the staff that you could only use a demon in your IG plots if it was less than two feet tall.

I remember chuckling when I read this. (This is probably on the GDB somewhere if someone wants to go dig it up.)

Some of those tiny demons are scarier than their gargantuan brethren!

Imagine, for instance, seeing a demonic head of cabbage.

In Armageddon.
