The quality of RP on Armageddon (re of a sort)

I read through, and given Niam(?)'s post, the guy started in a really bad area. I've never really had an issue with the RP on Armageddon so much as the lack of it in certain situations, but I think a lot of people could learn from Bishops mistake:  if you want RP, PLEASE don't start in an area that you're going to die in, for sure, and then gripe about it. IT makes the game look a lot worse than it really is, and al ot of us don't want to sit here hearing about you guys dying in the Big Hole of Allanak just because you started there.

Other than that, I think the quality of RP is great in this game, if you know where to look.

Any thoughts?

I have always been a MUSH/MUX player, where there's generally nothing to do but RP. The vast majority of MUD-style games have never held my interest, yet I've faithfully stuck with Armageddon for years. Probably more devotedly than most any other game I've played. Can't offer any higher praise than that.  :)

That said, starting in the Labyrinth means death is a constant companion. It's just the reality of the place. Someone murdering you swiftly is not bad RP there. If you need further evidence, stand in the alleys and watch some of the ambiance messages.

All threads like this turn into public kudos (and we have a staff-managed way to give kudos so do not need public, player-managed kudos) or complaints (and again, we have a staff-managed means to do this as well) that invariably make some people feel bad.  They all get shut down.

Also, I'm not sure I would have reopened a topic closed by staff as you did.

Helpers tend to suggest new players start in Allanak or Tuluk for several reasons - two of them being that there is a crimcode there, and that there are a lot of players in each area (and therefore the likelihood of there being PC law enforcers increases). The lawful portions of cities are safe, relative to other areas, and each area provides a fair level of difficulty of play and a challenging yet enjoyable environment. It is more difficult to play effectively in lawless areas.

What is the topic here?  How Bishop got his thread locked and how whiny he is?

Oh, I see.

I think the quality of RP can be top notch at times.  Other times, it's stale as hell.  It all depends on how motivated players are to RP out fun, exciting, and interesting scenes.
But not everyone makes gimmick characters, and a lot of the time (I think) players get bored of the game and continue to play it regardless.  This leads to some dull areas of RP like any MUD.

eh, i didn't see the log, but my guess is that it was probably an NPC that ganked him. at worst, it was just another newbie playing unrealistically in the rinth.

i don't feel sorry for him. countless noobs create half-elf assassins in the rinth and expect things to be easy, in spite of all the warnings to NOT DO THAT for your first few characters. Not all of them quit. Some do. Thems' the breaks.

I dunno, maybe we should have more warnings to not hamstring your first character? Or make it not allowed at all until you have one or two characters under your belt?

I think that the reason people stick with Armageddon MUD isn't because it offers a perfect roleplay environment; it's because there aren't any better alternatives out there.  I've played MUDs with far more realistic code, but I've yet to play another MUD that offers a comparable quality of roleplay, despite the occasional bad apple.

The Official GDB Hate Cycle

Sometimes "surprise! I'm fucking killing you!" is perfectly fine roleplay. Especially in the Labyrinth.

What's up with this thread, why does it exist? Don't we have this thread every week and doesn't it get locked every time?

What happened was perfectly IC.

The player in question is not a newb, and was not playing unrealistically.

Sometimes, you bite off more than you can chew.  It happens to the best of us.

Better luck, next time.
