Map of Allanak.

Started by warforged32, March 02, 2010, 02:35:48 PM

Alright, this thread is here because I am mapping out Allanak, and this will be a little thing I post in as I work on the map. The map will show shops that can be entered without the "enter" command, streets/alleys/etc, and the directions you can go from each location. There will be no names of -anything- on the map, as that would be no fun  :P

So far, I have mapped out the entire Main Bazaar.

Log in.  Type "help map allanak"

It does not show individual shops, no, but such information is considered IC and discouraged from being shared on the GDB  ;)

I appreciate your enthusiasm about the game.  You can certainly use a mapping utility to map out the game as you'd wish to so that you can keep track of things.

However, your map needs to be your map, not everyone's map.  This is considered an example of something in-character (knowing where shops are and how to get around in a particular area) that should be found out in-character (by traveling, etc.) rather than on the discussion board.  Please do not post your map anywhere.

Well, then what's the point of the ANSI map that is in the help files?

I know there is an ANSI map, but the map is inaccurate...

If I were to e-mail you or some other administrator the map, would you be able to tell me what would need to be removed to make it postable? Because the ANSI map in the help files is inaccurate... I actually got lost when I tried to follow it...

It's not inaccurate - it's "general", and old, but it's certainly usable.

Noone is saying you can't make your map - just that you can't give it to other people.

That's...sort of the point.  Not the getting lost part, but that it's not a to scale depiction of the city.  It's a broad and (very) general outline of the city.  Finding the specifics, and often the "right turns here" and "left turns around the stone slab to actually get into there" are part of the fun of learning the game.

Arm. has a steep learning curve, in case you haven't noticed  ;)  This has been discussed many times on the board, and so far it's remained on the difficult side for new players to get into.  I can't speak for all players, but many of us have expressed our feelings that this is a good thing.  Those that end up staying after fighting through the initial learning process are usually very dedicated to the game..which we all are, or we wouldn't be here.

Exactly!  Go ahead and map out anything and everything to your heart's content..so long as it remains "for your eyes only."

On a side note, it's great that a new player is very eager to help out and jump into things.  Everyone likes seeing that, and you'll get more encouragement and help, if you keep in mind that we're not trying to shoot down your ideas, but explain some of the rules that you might not yet be totally familiar with.

My personal maps actually helped me memorize the cities better.

Dude... I know what you are saying, but I think you are missing my -point-. The main point was to make an accurate map that at the very least showed all the different roads. Whether or not it shows the names of said roads, shops, huts/tents/stalls/stands/buildings/etc is not really a big deal. I am making one like that for -myself-, but I was simply asking, "If I make a map that doesn't show any of the stuff you should learn on your own, can I submit it?"... That was the basic idea. I just wanna make an accurate map of the streets so people won't get lost. I was actually doing better -without- that ANSI map that I was with it.

I wanna make an accurate map that -CAN- be posted... ( meaning, it lacks the stuff that would make it un-postable )

Alright, sorry to step in but the point is that all maps are for personal use only.  When I first started; long long time ago there was no help maps and it was great learning your way around for the first time.  I personally belive that to give away that info to all would take away from one of the main factors that makes the game so fun, exploring and learning on ones own.
Just my two cents...

Well considering the ANSI map of TULUK is accurate... I see no reason why the ANSI map of ALLANAK should be inaccurate...
and if all maps are for personal use only, why are there ANSI maps in the help files?

I think warforged is trying to make a map that is more like the map of Tuluk that is in the helpfiles. It reveals nothing you wouldn't know as a person living in Tuluk, and is sized fairly accurately. The Allanaki one is far less detailed, though it's still serviceable.

To answer your question about submitting the map, warforged: likely, yes. Staff has said that if a helpfile is out of date or could be improved you could always submit a clearer version.

Edit: oh, and I think the best way to do this would be through using mud @ armageddon . org

Thank you... At least -someone- gets it. xD
Unfortunately, the map is being made in a way that, well, I'm making it with Google SketchUp, then I just screenshot and crop the image. It makes it easy to replicate certain map-pieces. It won't be an ANSI map, but it is definitely clear.

Yes, if you think that the map you make might be suitable for public consumption, send an email to the mud account and show them your work. Again, please do not disseminate IC information like a map in an OOC way without staff approval.

One of the reasons I mentioned ANSI in the other thread was so that one would be able to look at it in-game using their client. (like the other maps we have)

Yeah, I have issues with ANSI though, the main one being that the characters aren't as wide as they are high, meaning they aren't squares. So, the map ends up being stretched vertically, making it look weird.

Thing is, with an ANSI map that would be displayed for everyone to see, it shouldn't be perfect anyway.  It should show generally what's going on.  It shouldn't be just as many characters north-south as Allanak is.  It shouldn't be just as many characters east-west as Allanak is either.  Simply draw it out in ANSI so that it looks right and isn't exact with all things labeled and it is something that you could share with others or have replace the ANSI map we already have and that you find fault with.

Hmm, I'm trying to remember.  I think the proposed Tuluki map was too big in some way, either character limits per line, or it scrolled too much, or something along those lines.

I don't think you get what it is that I am doing...
I am making a non-ANSI map, that shows NO details, but instead, shows the roads. NOTHING is going to be labeled. This isn't to replace the map in-game, it's to replace the map on the site, (hopefully), because the one on the sit SHOULD be accurately scaled, but that one doesn't NEED to be ANSI... at least, I don't THINK it does...
If it does, I will remake the map using ANSI... either way...

Can you point out what website map you are referring to?  I can't find it; the only maps I've seen are these:

If it is an artistic depiction somewhere on the website, its intent is not to be specifically accurate:

If it is an ANSI in-game depiction via helpfiles (like help map allanak), its intent is to be generally accurate (to a point--showing what regions are where, like "this area is the noble's quarter, this area is the Rinth, this area is the Bazaar") rather than specifically accurate ( "this room is a shop, this other room is a shop also, this road is six squares of movement long," etc).  It would be best for you to contact staff at mud @ armageddon . org to discuss what you would like to do in detail.  It may be feasible; it may not.
