Character height and weight

Started by Cutthroat, June 29, 2009, 10:17:58 AM

I know the subject's been discussed repeatedly in various threads, but I want to propose a couple of things and see what you all think.

1. Currently, the weight range for humans is 6 ten-stone (60kg, 132lbs) to 9 ten-stone (90kg, 198lbs). I want to see the minimum weight reduced to 4 ten-stone (40kg, 88lbs) and no change to the maximum weight. This will allow for more emaciated and lighter people and put more believability into what is currently a world of pretty heavy people. This would also allow for 5 ten-stone (50kg, 110lbs) to be selected, which is probably more reasonable for some character descriptions than 60kg (132lbs).

2. I'd rather see character weight measured in stones rather than ten-stones, during the character creation process, to allow for an even wider range of weight between each ten-stone level. With both ideas combined, the range would be 40 stones to 90 stones.

I dig this.

However, I'd also like to see the maximum range increased, because it is possible for someone to be, well, fat. An affluent enough commoner could pull it off, and nobles do it all the time.

I thought about that, and I figured it would be best to leave fatties to the world of special applications. They should be rare enough, right?

I wouldn't mind either way though.

It's true that they should be fairly rare, but given the limit of three special applications per year, I know I personally wouldn't want to "waste" one to have a character who's just plain fat, with no other special qualities. I'm sure one could make a case for submitting a stat change request after character creation to have a character's weight increased to make them obese, but that seems like an unnecessary step, and I'd be hesitant to do so myself.

I never even thought about the max weight.  90kg max?  Given the height max for humans, that seems fairly low.  Obesity aside, anyone powerfully built and even slightly stocky at almost 2 meters would be quite a bit more than 90kg.  Muscle is denser than fat, so you wouldn't even need to be extremely brawny to be over 90kgs.

I worked hard on this reference table, so I want to post it again:

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

And this chart is what I thought it was.  When I was in the army I knew lots of guys who didn't make weight because they were too muscular for their height.  just shy of 200 lbs is about right for a guy my height (6') when he is a bit muscular.  A guy who is 6'6"?  Forget about it!  I'm in favor of a broader range, but I have no factual nor anecdotal evidence to suggest how much lighter desert races might be without that unnecessary "water fat."

I generally ignore the absolute values. I look at the range of values for my race, and then pick my values from there. My "hulking, obese man" is hulking and obese, even though he is 6'6" and 200 lbs, which would make him nowhere near obese in Earth terms. Likewise, the "diminutive, bone-thin woman" is very short and extremely skinny, even though by Earth standards her 5'2" height is almost average and her 130 lbs weight (for her height) is closer to overweight than not.

I wouldn't mind having them changed to be more realistic, but I don't think it's terribly important. I would be especially careful about increasing the upper limit on body weights, simply because I think people with non-exceptional strength find it difficult to move corpses enough as it is.

I would also like a broader range.  The current min-max ranges are too limited.

You send to staff:
"Welcome to Armageddon."

Okay folks, since many people seem to be unopposed, and like the idea, what are some potential problems with the idea? (Maybe staff could weigh in on this too.)

Carrying bodies Should this be easy or hard? It will definitely be easy to carry a dead 88-pound body, and it will definitely be hard to carry 220 or 242 pounds.

Weight related to container capacity An 88 pound body would probably codedly be able to fit into some bags and backpacks... yeah.

Agreed, although I kind of already make m character what I want and just use the scales we have as a looks-only kinda thing kinda thing...height is the only really visible stat besides if you weight over 9 ten-stone then you show up as thick or obese with hooded or what ever.
