Memories

so, in a couple of games I have played, they had the ldesc just like we do here. On one game in particular they had a feture to 'remimber' people's names. Now, the code was somthing like +remimber slim= Bob" and you could 'remimber' them under any name you wanted. All it would do, really, is cut out the ldesc -for you- everyone else would still see 'the slim bug eyed freak' howeer, in you're posts, and on the room desc, you yourself would read 'bob'.

I thought it was nifty.

I feel that this leads to bad form.

If you cannot remember someone's name IG, and lets say you met then 2 RL weeks ago, then it's been a month for your character and they're definitely not going to remember it. So, then, why magickally know their name? Forgetting a name can be interesting role-play, and if it's someone important, then work to remember it better, or write it down.

I think it was rather obvious in that sentence that I was speaking from an OOC perspective.

I highly agree with that. I -never- write down names and sdescs. And I've had an absolutely wonderful time trying to remember names and playing the pronoun game.

I think it's good practice to write down everyone your character's met, especially if your character has a different "Intelligence" then what you have IRL. You may personally remember someone your character has encountered that your character might not remember, or you may even forget someone your character should obviously remember.

For example, In real life, would you remember the name of someone who saved your life? Someone did do for my character semi-recently, but I cannot remember their name. My character, however, wouldn't forget his name for a -long- time. Conversely, he forgets the name of (Insert Templar here) Quite frequently.

Yeah, but following your point, If someone saved my life in Armageddon it's really unlikely I'm going to forget their name anytime soon. I suppose I just hate how everyone seems to have a perfect recollection of names and faces at all times.

I'd suggest logging all your role-playing sessions so that you can refer back to them for special cases like that.

I find it difficult going through my logs as it is, and only do so if I have a specific reason. Not to mention it's hard to search for something if you don't know what it is. If it's any consolation, my character has a horrible memory.

I always have my client taking up the left half of my screen (widescreen laptop).
On the right in the top half I have my IM windows, and on the bottom a notepad document titled <Current PC> Notes.

Everytime I am introduced to someone I write the name they give me, sdesc, and what they do.
Also my PCs feeling towards the person if it is somone they know fairly well.

If you're reasonably important and I've decided my *character* would remember your name, I add you to a lil stringlist. I don't like to do this though, because it's wonderfully arrogant to forget people's names and simply not care.

I usually just try remembering. If I forget for real, it's fun to roleplay. It really sucks though, when I need to remember some mundane person... or when I forget someone who is 'important'.

As I've said before, my character spends their entire life in Zalanthas. I spend a few hours a day if I'm lucky. My character only has to remember things that happen in game; I have to remember all the much more important RL things while in game things take a back seat in my head. So ... I don't think it's horribly bad form to write down some people's names and sdesc ... titles or whatever job they have ... because I have way better things to fill my own head with in the real world.

But, I usually only bother to write down names and what have you if my PC should remember. If I had a conversation or two with someone and it left an impression, I'll probably write it down. If it was one of those nods across the bar and that's about it, eh ... probably not.

introduction system, is what I've seen it as in most games.

intro breasted Frank
You introduce yourself to the rangy, big-breasted man as Frank.

set intro on
You are now receiving introductions.

The rangy, big-breasted man introduces himself to you as Bob
You will now remember the rangy, big-breasted man as Bob

set intro off
You are not longer receiving introductions.

intro scrotal Frankloid
You introduce yourself to the scrotal-shaped man as Frankloid

The scrotal-shaped man introduces himself to you as Dick
You fail to remember his name.

say Come again?
You say, in Hellenistic-accented sirihish, "Come again?"

set intro on
You are now receiving introductions.

The scrotal-shaped man introduces himself to you as Dick
You will now remember the scrotal-shaped man as Dick

Also, many of my characters have better memories than I do, mainly out of necessity; I have mnemonic luxuries like the ability to write, use a calendar, a computer, etc.

many many clients support that.
In some clients,
#replace {the tall man} {the tall ma(Amos)}
may work...
And you will see.

the tall ma(Amos) has arrived from west.

Be careful to leave the end like ma(Amos), instead of man(Amos) to prevent a dead-loop.

He's right, it has been brought up again a million times, but JaRoD's post here is a little misleading because while a lot of people have suggested it, a lot of players as well have staff have stated reasons for why they would rather this not be implemented.  This idea comes up a lot, but that doesn't mean it is a popular one.  Just a common one.

I can see it now.

The dark, figury figure has arrived from the north.
The dark, figury figure says, " Help me! Amos attacked me!"

The nosey, long-nosed templar asks, "What did Amos look like?"

The dark, figury figure says, "Well, he was-uh, Amosy, and he had brown hair... Ok, I'll leave."

Right so, let me ammend my past thing.

At the game I found this one, it was all cool with diffrent codey things. I also didn't know that this is always coming up, I don't really play around on the board all that much...

At the game i found this at;
The feture was coded that if you didn't see somone for a long period of time... the code would drop. Kindda like... the sniff comand. If you don't apply it every now and then, you smell like sweat.
It appeared somthing like" The bastard with the long brown hair (bob). Only on the room desc.  You still got the ldesc every action...
The name would dissapear for a mask or a raised hood. In fact, you couldn't really read the desc if they had a cloak up. That game you had several diffrent descs. Hood up, down, night, day, ect. It took a special skill to see around the all covering cloak.
The code would drop the names every now and then just to throw you.
You couldn't remimber everyone. Like how you can't just contact everyone, all the time.
You could remimber fake names.
You could clear who all remimbers your name. Say if you changed your apperance, or didn't want anyone to know your name.

I understand why they don't want it here. I just thought it was nifty, and this is... Some board for code disscussion...
