Haggling Skill

Does your bartering skill improve even if you are just 'offer sword'-ing and selling at normal price? Or  'offer 20 coins shirt'-ing for a shirt that already costs 20?

Basically, do you have to get a bargain to improve your barter skill.

This is definitely Find Out IC worthy.

WHAT?

::)

I think the details of how the code works in something like that is definately not a 'find out IC' type issue. However, codey stuff like how skill improvements work etc is not something that is usually divulged by staff. Best to find out IG (-not- IC) by seeing whether it works for you.

Though I'd think that if I was constantly 'bartering' and never trying to get a decent price, instead always just paying what the shopkeeper wanted...I probably wouldn't be learning anything.

I don't always act superior... but when I do it's on the forums of a text-based game

Yeah, I have to agree.

While this is something you may be able to figure out in GAME, it is basically meta-gaming to do so (not that it is preventable)...

The fact of the matter is that the code syntax doesn't have anything to do with the in-character actions.

But let's think about it logically... If you aren't haggling, how can you get better at it?

If your skill -does- improve by simply using the "barter" command without haggling, then it is broken.

Tisiphone, you're very wrong about this being "Find out IC worthy." If you're going to continue to make decisions for other people on this you should consider being right more often about it.

Failing being right more often, you could at least sandwich it between suggestions on how they might go about finding out IC, that way your post isn't completely worthless and you come across as less of a prick.

jcljules, the helpfiles say, " When you fail in an attempt to use a skill or spell, there is a chance it will improve. "

they also say, "when you wish to purchase an item, the merchant will usually give you a price that is far more than the item is worth. Hence, what you can do is offer a lower price by saying 'offer <lower price> <item>'. The merchant will sometimes counter with a more modest reduction, or he/she will stand firm on the first offer. "

So it stands to reason that you would have to use offer to actually fail, and thus actually learn.

Thanks for your help--I don't think I could have found this out IC, because it wouldn't be in character for my character to haggle over every item he buys and sells just to experiment, and I was afraid of 'metagaming'

What tisiphone meant was that it isn't really appropriate to ask such in depth code questions.

It's kind of like asking, "What improves kick faster, kicking at jozhal, or kicking at mekillots?"

Now, your questions wasn't to that magnitude, but questions like this about code can easily be misconstrued.

Generally it is more appropriate to use the request tool for stuff that could be borderline.

In depth code question...Huh?

If anything it was just a poorly worded question IMO and 137 answered it properly and perfectly IMO. Only thing I would add is.

Jcljules. Remember, the In Game help files are HUGE and will answer most any question you have. And is actually the first place you should try. Then the web page has a search engine for help files, Second place to try.

I would say it is a pretty rare question that cannot be answered there. And if it is that rare, a good rule of thumb would be it is too IC to talk about on the GDB, use request tool.
