Wearing shields on the back

Started by NoteworthyFellow, October 10, 2007, 08:01:15 PM

I notice that shields can be worn on the back; is this similar to sheathing a weapon?  That is to say, is there a command to take the shield straight off of one's back and into one's secondary hand?  Or would one have to type "rem shield" and "hold shield" every time?

Thanks!

remove shield, hold shield

remove shield, wear shield

It's not like weapons. Unfortunately.

I'm gonna go all Gimfalisette on you guys and lay down some numbers.

This is something that should be added in regards to shields. If a shield is worn on the back you should be able to:

>ready shield

You remove a round chitin shield from your back and hold it before you.

>strap shield

You stop holding a round chitin shield and strap it across your back.

Something like that. *shrug*

May the fap be with you, always. ;D

Why not just "draw shield" and "sheathe shield"?
Default location for sheathing would be the back.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

Its not bad the way it is, I presume it is harder in real life to get a shield from your back and put your arms through the straps than it is to just whip out a sword.

Macro it.

As far as I remember, although I could be wrong, equipment cannot be removed while in combat. I seem to recall being in a situation where I was attacked with a shield on my back and couldn't remove it in order to hold it.

You can draw weapons and things like shields, and even stop using these items as well during combat, but gear like helmets and clothes you cannot.

Unless something has changed, you cannot remove a shield from the back in combat. You can ep/es/etwo/rp/rs/rtwo a shield in combat though.

Fnord is correct, if you are wearing a shield on your back during combat, you can't remove it from your back so that you can use it.

Well, well! Pbbbbt! :P That's all I've got to say.

Actually...You can.

Though...its an obvious oversight in code.

Though I've never gotten yelled at for doing it...course, I only use it for getting that shield off my PCs back because I agree that you SHOULD be able to do so. Its not like a pair of pants. I mean, I've always pictured that wearing a shield on your back was really an arm through one of the straps then pushed up and around to be behind you...sort of like a duffel on your shoulder. Pretty easy to swing something like that around to ready position.

But, unless staff feels like saying exactly how. I am not going to.

You can actually be struck on your back in certain circumstances too, if I'm not mistaken, so having a shield there isn't completely useless.

Shield Use, the skill, does no good for you unless the shield is held.  Wearing it on your back does little good.

But does it turn aside/absorb an attack "in that circumstance" like armor would?

I still think the best closure you get in Armageddon is just moving on to the next character.

Quote from: "Is Friday"But does it turn aside/absorb an attack "in that circumstance" like armor would?

Probably not.   A shield would be considered 'a shield' and not 'armor'.

But, it's hard to say.  I haven't looked at the code.

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

I've had a PC take an attack "in that circumstance" while wearing a shield. The shield was at 'new' condition beforehand, afterward at 'used.' So unless an imm just changed it to reflect the damage, I think they do count as armour under that circumstance.

There are other items that can be worn in the same location that ARE armor....so, there is every possibility that it might be as well since it is worn.

Per the original code that this game is based on, 'armor' and 'shield' are separate object types.  However, the 'armor value' is a field independent of object type.  If shields have an 'armor value,' then it is possible that they can absorb damage like armor.

However, the code this is based on is not exactly what the code is now.  This starts with the inclusion of 'shield use' as a skill.  There's also the fact that object types have different fields available to them.  The type 'shield' may not have an armor value any more, since shields aren't just armor like they used to be.

Who knows?  Ask the staff.  They might tell us, but then again, they might not.  I'm content using a shield when it is appropriate to use a shield and not worrying about the coded benefits.
