hemote and semote possibility

Started by marko, May 03, 2006, 02:30:07 PM

I'm posting this because I don't have much opinion either way although the thought came to me while doing a hemote.

When hemote echos back to the player who did it, should the echo include a message such as:

hidden: and then the emote?

I'm thinking in terms of logs, scroll back, and just rereading what was done later on to identify what was hidden and what wasn't.

Same thing for semote

Thoughts?

How do you know this doesn't already exist, marko?

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

I believe he is speaking about when I do:

hemote scratches his butt.

Instead of just seeing:

Morgenes scratches his butt.

I'd see:

(hidden) Morgenes scratches his butt.

I dunno, I'll go scratch my butt and think on it ;)

Yeah, that's exactly it Morgenes.

I'm of two minds about it.  But I did an hemote and it showed up as a regular emote - being me, I looked away from my screen, looked back, and was confused for a moment if I had normally emoted it or hemoted.

So yeah, something like:

hemote scratches his butt.

[hidden] The foolish man scratches his butt.

semote looks around shiftily.

[silent] The foolish man looks around shiftily.

I dunno either way.  Might be a better way to do it.  Might not even be worth doing it.  Maybe leave it up to the player to script it in their client if they so please?  Hence posting it here.  :)

Rather than the [], might it look better if it said:

Hidden, the grey man picks at his ass.

Silently, the yellow man looks around shiftily.

It still gets the point across, without the IC-breaking brackets.

I've had situations where I had to look at a friend and ask: Did you guys
see that?  Mainly because I wasn't sure if anyone else was watching at the
time.

I think you should have to ask your friend if they saw that or not.  Some
things are solely in the eyes of the beholder. ;)

It's a code.. so I don't think telling it is IC at all.
I saw hemotes, they're shown as: You notice, <emote>.
If there's not another change of course.

Edited to add, to Marko: Ops.. Forgive me.. my bad.. I guess I didn't clearly read your post.

What I'm talking about is it being shown to the person who did the emote.

How others see these emotes is already handled really well.

This is only for the person who does the emote.  Again, I dunno if it is needed or not.  Just a thought.  :)

Not nixing the idea that it should be done through the game's code, but I imagine this is possible via your client in the meantime. I agree that for logs especially this would be invaluable.

I agree with this.  I think there -should- be an hemote/semote marker on your echo, but there should -not- be one when you notice an hemote.  Or, perhaps an additional watch skill check that allows you to identify it as hidden (more difficult than noticing in the first place).

Yeah, I agree on this.

Instead of "hidden", for the hemote readback I think it might look better as "furtively".

Furtively, the man glances at the busty woman's chest.

Otherwise I'm totally in favor.

Furtively, adjusting his hat, the man studies the half-elf woman's chest.

It can read awkwardly for some emotes, so I'd prefer this:

Hidden: Adjusting his hat, the man studies the half-elf woman's chest.

your mother is an elf.

If it is just for the emoter, then I prefer (hidden) or something along those lines.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't want either. All I need to know if is I spelt it right.
