Wouldn't it be nice to be able to dictate how much water one wishes to buy?

Fill up is a nice easy command and I don't think it should change.  But, what if we added another option:  the ability to buy a given amount of water.

Maybe someone doesn't wish to buy a full container or doesn't have enough sids to fill up a large skin... this way they could still get water.  Perhaps the command would be something where one tells how many sids they'd like to spend.  Perhaps for ease it could code-wise only work on the way we measure containers' fullness now; or perhaps based on number of drinks/sips

Yes.
We need this.

"fill waterskin 2 hands"
"fill waterskin full"
"fill waterskin 40 coins"

what if you "fill waterskin 40 coins" and you get more water than you have space for. did you just rip yourself off?

First, Great idea!

Especially "fill waterskin 40 coins".

And:

Sounds like this will cause a bug.  Though, I would hope the solution to be, you get your waterskin full, and the excessive coins, you just lost them to the dude, because you did not pay much attention on your waterskin's capacity.
some of my posts are serious stuff

At the moment, if you don't have enough sid in your inventory to fill your skin, you simply can't buy. Just make it so that in that situation, it takes all your coin and gives you an appropriate amount of water. That way there's no need for different commands and no way to rip yourself off.

buy a smaller skin. fill it up. put it in the big skin.

sure, be nice if this was coded -eventually-, but since there's an easy way to work around the issue ingame, I don't think it should be high priority.

I think the problem is dehydrating when you don't have the coisn for a full skin. Then obviously you don't have the coins to buy another waterskin, either. Aslso consider that there isn't an infinite amount of buyable water containers avalaible everywhere you go.

I have never seen any measurement tools at the various locations where water is purchased.

Quite frankly, it isn't that complex.  You pay the templar, you dip your waterskin in a giant pool of water.  The reason you can't buy a different amount of water than the amount that it takes to fill a waterskin is because the waterskin is the only thing measuring the water in the first place.

I was about to post something to that effect ERS.. luckily, I scrolled down and read the thread before posting..

It isn't that complex to only fill something about half way or so either.  Besides, it's the templar that fills the skin; which means he would do so masterfully.  Heck, maybe that's what he actually studied when he was in school?

It's also not complex to make ten or so ceramic cups of different, measured sizes and pouring pipes near the top, fill those in the pool and pour them into the waterskin.
It would also make the job easier for the templar, because then he'd only have to count cups instead of guess just how much each waterskin can hold.

This passes the test of realism.

Been a while since I bought water, but what does it say when you do? I'm pretty sure it says something to the effect of "the templar fills up your skin to the brim" or "the tenneshi fool fills your skin to the brim," rather than "you dip your crusty, dusty waterskin into a pool of clean water and fill it up."

I don't think the templars would ever allow your skin, which could be filled with any number of poisons or foulness, near the pool of water itself. They would do the filling using a proxy of some kind.

Or they have a dirty nasty ass slave fill it for you, in front of you, then spit in it for you to bless it.

Or that is what they did for my northerner pc.

I'd say that things cost what they cost.  Picture it, if you will.

You say to the water-selling templar, "Just half a skin full, Lord Templar."

The bored-looking templar says to you, "Sure.  Forty sid."

You say to the bored-looking templar, "Forty sid!  That's what it costs to fill the whole thing up, Lord Templar!"

The bored-looking templar says to you, sneering, "Maybe next time you won't waste my time on this 'half a skin full nonsense.'"
