Last Names

I'm not sure if this has ever been brought up before, but do people have last names? Humans, elves, dwarves, HG's all around? I know a few people have last names like nobles and templars, but do commoners have them too? Or are our names sort of a representation of our first and last name? Like a person's name would be similar to their parents' name? If anybody has the answer to this, write it down.  :D

Some of mine have had last names, some didn't. No one's told me I couldn't, or that I should.

Ya, I suppose names could be based on race, origin, family, it's not very clear. Meh.

Some people have last names that aren't exactly the same as "modern" family names.

*There is the "of . . . " name, similar to Irish O' names.  I am Bob of Red Storm.  I am Amos of the plains.  I am Pickle of the Dill tribe.

*Then there is the ever popular -son or -daughter last name.  Johnson = John's son, Amos' daughter, Lilith's son, etc.   I am Warf, son of Mog.

*Some families may maintain Family names through the generations.  We know that the great houses do, presumably some lesser houses and those that want to be great houses do too.

From what I've seen you are a-ok whether you choose to have extra names or not.

I kinda like it like that.

Me too. I find it difficult remembering some people's first names.

last name = family name

I don't see the problem with any character having one, as long as you include a mention of his/her family in the background.

I am Amos Rot.... of the House Rot.... you know - the one that directly opposes House Tor.

Hehe.. I have seen a couple fancy surnames IG something like Dr'uleli  like coming from some kind a novel about underdark or French aristocrat family surnames. If players think that's fine I think that is... but on the other hand, I think that sounds better to use your mother's or father's name as a surname like.. Smarty son of Smithy.

Onetime I made a character who was brother to another character. We both had the same family name, but we pretty much never used them.

Personal preference:
I think a lot of the last names are a little grandiose.

Like Joe Bobson makes sense to me, or "Joe Escruherder."  "But "Joe Antheolavsianosunari?" Eh not so much.

Well, I don't do last names unless I'm playing some merchants with a moderately well to do background. Other wise, my characters usually don't have a last name.

After all there's not marriages for commoners.

Merchants are commoners, and merchant family members get married.

Note: marriages on Zalanthas are NOT like marriages IRL.  Some people seem to forget that.

Same as funerals and births.
