Byn Recruitment

The T'zai Byn is a very important clan for Arm, from an IC as well as OOC viewpoint. The OOC consideration being that it is probably the best and sometimes the only way for newbie PCs to get into a clan (quickly after char creation) which offers RP, training, shelter and nourishment.

While old and seasoned players will have the time and patience to endure long waits for a Byn sergeant or higher-up to appear and recruit them, I doubt newbies would be of the same mindset. Long periods of wait to sign on with the Byn would definitely be detrimental to the Mud, purely from an OOC viewpoint.

While I do understand that the Byn is a hard-core PC driven clan, could some sort of arrangement be made for recruitment purposes, when there is a dearth of PC recruiters available in the Byn?

I agree on all points to a degree, but it seems more like an ask the staff question, than general discussion.

But honestly, the southern Byn sergeant hasn't been dead -that- long. Trust me, I would know.   :X

I have seen lots of new players that couldn't wait for the sergeant to recruit them go ahead move on to other jobs, and that was when he was alive, kicking, and taking a big chunk of my day.

The clan immortals are aware of the situation, and there's still some potentials left. Give it time, and in the mean time, tend to the new players on your own. Also, everyone should be very aware that this issue has nothing to do with the northern compound.

That's my opinion, and I like to think it carries some weight in this particular instance.

From what I have seen, in order to enjoy the Byn there needs to be a good influx of PCs passing through.  The Byn are limted in what they can do and the social interaction is a very large  part of what goes on there.  Also without a seargent, missions and out of city training seem out of the question.  It seems there should be at least a few sergeants out there at any given time.

That being said, there are at least a few very active former bynner PC's (bynner in their current life, not former) who could be used to fill a special consultant role for a limited time.  Things like this do happen in the real world as well. Perhaps these people could be paid a percentage of the entrance fee, paid a retainer to take the runners on x number of training missions, etc.  I think it would be interesting to bring experienced ex-bynnners back for the occasional guest appearance.

Have you tried emailing the T'zai Byn clan IMMs, CC the mud?
Quote from: AnaelYou know what I love about the word panic?  In Czech, it's the word for "male virgin".

I always saw the Byn kind of like the Marines of the late 60s and early 70s in the Vietnam war, a bunch of different personalities thrown together and trying to survive where they aren't much liked by anybody.  What should happen during wars/battles when an officer dies, someone else should be promoted promptly, as is custom is war, a runner should be able to go straight to sergeant if he shows promise, and why not?  The only factor influencing it is an immortals fear of something happening by giving that player the responsibility of a leader, again though it's an ooc factor and ic it should happen more often if officer's died suddenly, many privates went straight to sergeant at times during war, there's no one else to lead your unit? Well looks like there is now.  I don't like the whole special application for a sergeant process, it should all be done in character, being a sergeant in the byn isn't exactly the hardest role to play.

You know, acctually, if your a Trooper, and a Sergeant dies, you generally do get a promotion relatively quickly as long as you have decent playtimes.  I don't think I've ever heard of a Runner going straight to Sergeant for the simple fact that they arnt even fully trained yet and could possibly die quickly if put into a tough situation.

Trooper or Runner, I see Trooper as just a PFC in the military terms.  Still a runner shouldn't be ruled out just because he is a runner and not a trooper.

..more like WWII when Dougie hung them out to dry.

Troopers are more like the Corporals and Sergeants (NCO's) today, while Sergeants are more like Staff Sergeants and Gunnery Sergeants (Staff NCO's).  If you want to continue the Marine Corps comparison.

Been a long time since I was one but....The reality of being a Byn sergeant ain't very pretty folks...constant requests for contracts in your head, constant requests for recruitment ( I personally have hauled five wanna be runners to the compound at one time) constant squables to attend to...and then there are the contracts to do, numbers to juggle, getting all (or most all) home safely.  For the atmosphere to stay "byn" the sergeants really have to work hard IC and OOC.  No regularly played sergeants usually means a lull in Byn activity.  Probably a lull now by the sounds of things on the boards. Wait a bit, it will come back.  I know, I know that don't help the Byn wanna be's right now but life ain't fair.
I'd rather be lucky than good.

Right, cowboy. Being a Byn sergeant ain't easy if you take to heart your fellow players' experiences like you should.

I think as long as a single trooper is alive, somewhere, you won't see a runner promoted to sergeant. And considering all the virtual troopers . . .yea . . . no. Won't happen except MAYBE in the field, if everyone of rank dies and the eldest runner steps up.

But yea, the quickest way to deal with this is email the Byn immortals, let them know how dire the need is getting. The Byn immortals have other responsibilities too, and I imagine they try to balance everything. If they are made aware of a pressing need in one area, they may divert attention to it. But then, maybe they are aware and you're telling them what they already know.

And since that's probably the case, you should be very polite about your suggestions.

Mydryn, savak, and tlaloc are the Byn immortals. Go to it.

See, That is where the problem is.
There are still a few Sargeant pc's left with a lieutenant.
But life does get in the way, along with pc problems, a strained hand, (god help us).

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

I think this would just be best solved if an imm of the clan was assigned an extra pc. One in a secondary slot or such that they dont bother playing much...but has the official rank of sergeant, and while not oocly active and logged in...is in the loop...and could step in to give the formal recruitments that he might have heard of icly though vnpcs or other means.

etc.

my three sids.

IMMs do not play characters in their own clan to avoid any suspicions.  We can always animate an NPC, though.

> sing (dancing around with a wand in one hand) Put that together and what do you got?  Ximminy Xamminy, Ximminy Xamminy, Ximminy Xamminy Xoo!

It is also perfeclty acceptable to wish up to have a Byn npc animated. You may not get a response, but on the other hand you might.
