Karma is a value that allows you to choose different races, classes and subclasses during character creation.  These extra races and subclasses are more powerful, have more restrictive roleplaying rules, and also contain magick within the world of Zalanthas.  They can be incredibly disruptive to the other players if their gameplay is used incorrectly.  For example, having a half-giant portrayed to be an army general and directing everyone where to go, or a magick-user who is casting spells on everything and everyone just to branch the next spell.

Karma is given by the staff members to the players as a token of trust, allowing them to play the more roleplay-heavy races and subclasses without strict oversight.  The full breakdown for Karma Criteria is here: https://gdb.armageddon.org/index.php/topic,60314.msg1102674.html#msg1102674

I always imagined them as gold bananas like in Donkey Kong Country, but the analogy is correct.

Yeah, 1 karma isn't hard to get, just RP and don't do ridiculous stuff, and stick around.

They're not always cooler characters though.  Some consider them more difficult characters. More challenging characters. Characters with more IC and OOC responsibilities. They can be very cool. But so can the mundane nobody no-karma PC who shows up during some crazy plots and ends up neck-deep in the plotlines.

This is one of the most important aspects of this game to learn.  Karma does not mean a cooler character, it just means different opportunities. 0-karma characters are often the coolest, despite only having the "standard" availability of skills.

Hoofprints walking up her back
There were empties by her war braids
And sixty-five dead carru in a stack.

Drunken Salarr is right, tbh. Nobody cares about or remembers Urist McRukempowerment but everyone remembers an ancient veteran Bynner or a hilarious performer. Be a real person in the world instead of a collection of stats and spells and you will live FOREVER.

Every second pc of mine is mundane, is a completely different game, but an amazingly fun one. The secret is create a concept you will enjoy playing even a month from now, and will bring you joy, then play it 100% ic to the hilt.

Shine on you crazy diamonds.

One of my favorite concepts I have ever seen was a person playing a Drovian in Tuluk, but they were a Barber.  It isn't about the skills, it's about the concept, and the entertainment and fun you can create for those around you along with yourself.

Karma is regenerating and spendable points that allows you to choose different races and subclasses during character creation.

::EDIT::
After this was originally posted, the "karma spend" and "karma regeneration" has changed.  This means that karma isn't spent anymore when you choose a race or a subclass that 'consumes' the regenerating karma points.
::EDIT 2::
The non-magickal subclasses went through a change, and all became 0 karma subclasses.  There are no more 1 karma "extended subclasses"
