I'm unable to put objects on my carpet. Oh woe to murderers and storage monkeys alike.

Some carpets, you can put items on.
Bug it and buy a new carpet.

I truthfully never knew this...  If someone had an apartment that was robbed like two years ago, and you wondered why the guy didn't take the stuff off your carpet...that was me.
