Become Someone!

Hey,

[A bunch of stuff that should be handled IC'ly]

srsly.
"You will have useful work: the destruction of evil men. What work could be more useful? This is Beyond; you will find that your work is never done -- So therefore you may never know a life of peace."

~Jack Vance~

Things like this need to be, and will be, handled IC.

The exact nature of these types of things carries a massive amount of mistrust, backstabbing, and other non-team-play oriented things.  Give a person the chance to backstab you, it'll be fun!

kthxbai,
-staff.
I seduced the daughters of men
And made the death of them.
I demanded human sacrifices
From the rest of them.
I became the spirit that haunted
And protected them.
And I lived in the tower of flame
But death collected them.
-War is my Destiny, Ill Bill

I fail to see how handling making a criminal character, or reminding people that they should, is in any way different than these blatant advertisements for the 'other team', the Militias of Allanak and Tuluk.

Just trying to make everyone's lives more interesting, Nooshybumpkins.

EDIT: Hey, people can join the Militia IC too! Wow. interesting.

Why?

Because criminals should not trust other people.  It's part of the character design, and part of some clan structures.  It's one of the rules for the criminal organizations that are stated on the Clan Site.

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

I think you can announce for people to -play- criminals, I just don't think you can ask them to play with -your- char unless its in game.

Kind of a double standard with people shouting out for SLK members and such, but you assume tribemembers won't stab each other and criminals might.
I tripped and Fale down my stairs. Drink milk and you'll grow Uaptal. I know this guy from the state of Tenneshi. This house will go up Borsail tomorrow. I gave my book to him Nenyuk it back again. I hired this guy golfing to Kadius around for a while.

IM SAYING IN GENERAL GOD COCKINBALLS DAMNIT! JUST PLAY CRIMINALS!

I've made multiple attempts at playing criminals of various degrees and social status, and different goals and means to reach them. What they had in common was the fact that breaking the law in one way or another was their main method of survival, so they were career criminals.

With every single one of the characters, I've had the following problem:

In the past year or so, mundane crime has dropped to an all-time low. This is likely due to the fact that we're approaching the proverbial end, so many players have decided that now is not the time to play pickpockets, spice smugglers, assassins and muggers. Due to this, actual mundane crime on an individual basis becomes so much more visible, and some characters in charge of fighting this crime become a little too zealous about it because it now happens so rarely. If you haven't made an arrest for two real-life weeks, chances are you're going to take an unreasonably high interest next time you get the tiniest opportunity to get your hands on some criminal, any criminal. There are exceptions, and it has happened to me in both city-states, so I'm not saying that everyone who plays in the law enforcement sector is a douche, but it has definitely been my experience that these days any crime is thwarted too quickly and heavily for it to reach the point where any kind of criminal underground can exist, especially if you want it to exist outside the 'rinth. Armageddon's players have always preyed ferociously on anything that might be a thief or anything similarly unsavory, and this has only become worse now that very few players still play such characters.

It's a difficult issue. How can anyone tell the player of Private Amos that he shouldn't pursue when five commoners tell them that Malik the Streetsweeper is actually lifting pouches up on Meleth's Circle? And on the other hand, how are you going to keep the game playable for Malik who is now labeled as effectively the only thief in town, soon to be recognized by half of its active playerbase everytime he shows his face (or even if he doesn't)? Only gonna work if Malik is never, ever caught failing peek, sneak or steal, and what are the odds of that?

So I've finally come to the conclusion that any kind of criminal roleplay is close to impossible in the game's current state. I must admit that it does feel kinda pointless to steal stable tickets from people while the clock is ticking toward the end of the world as we know it, and it certainly doesn't help that your role has become twice as difficult as it used to be.

I had a thief about three months ago. He failed more times than he succeeded. Some people knew he was a thief. Some didn't. He survived because he worked with a group of others who could help him out.

I think what Reiloth is emphasizing with this thread is that its a -lot- easier to be a thief if you work with others.

It's more difficult being a lone thief.

Reiloth - If my character dies before Arm1 is finished, I'll make a thiefy character. I'm not saying where, when, etc. but just to let you know there will be another sneaky out there once I'm done with this char.

I'd just like to point out that there are still plenty of opportunities for criminal roleplay even when having no coded "criminal" skills at all. Sell false information, spy on people, play your enemies and friends against each other. All three are things I've seen alive and well in the last few weeks.

How to be successful as a criminal, in four steps:

1. Bribe the authorities.
2. Don't lie to the authorities.
3. Be useful to the authorities.
4. Don't try doing your crime on the friends of the authorities.

So simple, really. And yet almost no criminals ever do it. THAT is why they are not successful.

I'm gonna go all Gimfalisette on you guys and lay down some numbers.

It's true.  The "authority" file on the site says it all.

Well that's... true. To an extent. But the game would be very simplistic and boring if every criminal was in the pockets of the authorities.  Some of them are going to have to be free lance, or well, in someone else's pocket.  But they can expect a hard time.

I think the concern of the previous poster was the tendency for pcs to get picked out of a virtual crowd really quickly.  The room echo in the market place can't get busted, so the brand new pc pickpocket does.  And once you get picked up a couple times, everyone knows your sdesc and have a really hard time forgetting it.

Now... a lot of players in my experience are really good about that kind of thing, but they aren't all.  And it can be enormously frustrating playing "villains" on rpi muds in my experience.

Never had any bad experiences here, but I haven't really been in a position to find out. ;)
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

I'm all for an upswing in antagonists.
