Title: Something Really Annoying
Post by: Sanvean on March 08, 2003, 10:57:47 AM
In the process of clearing up some rooms, I found that someone has been dragging couches out of the Bard's Barrel and using them to furnish their own.

Come on. I have no clue how someone rationalized this, particularly FOUR TIMES. Do you not think that a bartender is going to notice and object when you're walking out with a couch? This is incredibly bad play and when you do this, I feel frustrated because it removes something from the game. I don't have any way of knowing that people are doing this, short of checking each and every tavern in the game on Saturdays, which is a couple of hours that I would much rather use elsewhere.

KNOCK IT OFF. I cannot express how incredibly irritated I am by this. I don't have any way of tracking who did it, because I don't know when it happened, but I presume you know who you are.

For the record: do not steal furniture from bars. If you need a chair, there are furniture shops in the game. If they're not selling chairs, let me know and I'll fix it.

I'm sorry.  I know this bugs the hell out of you, San, but I just can't stop laughing!

I keep getting this mental image in my head that goes something like this:

The well dressed common man and the brawny common woman have arrived from the west, carrying a small leather couch.

The burly bartender glances up from wiping down the bar, his eyebrows raising and jaw dropping.

The burly bartender shouts, in sirihish:
"What the.....?!  Hey!  Where the fuck do you think you're taking MY couch?!"

  It's just too fucking funny, man!

I wonder where people come UP with these ideas?!

This is one of those things...

Let's just say it's a good thing I'm not an imm. Instead of asking people nicely on the GDB not to steal couches from the Barrel, I'd have waited in that room in imm invis. And waited, till the furniture thieves struck. Then I'd have fried that PC(s) on the spot.

So I guess it's really good I'm not an imm, huh? Got to wonder what kind of people think they can just walk away with a couch, of all things.

Can we have permission to execute this person on site if they are discovered?

Yeah, I'm with Naatok. That's pretty funny.

I keep getting this picture of a PC walking out of the Antechamber of the Barrel with a couch on his back. He stops in his steps, looks around with shifty eyes as the bartender stares, then scurries out.

Just put a script I call the auto 'I breaka you face' defense in place. Someone tries to walk out with a couch and the script goes off. Bartender screams something (preferably, 'I BREAKA YOU FACE!') and punches the PC so hard in the face it's an insta gib.

Wow, and I worry about myself doing bad RP by going AFK too much.

Heh, that's just lame.  Give a trusted char or two no-crim flag and let them find the thief...  say they were hired by the bartender.

Why not spend a few hours working on a way that if somone is taking furniture out of the bars that the bartender yells 'Hey, No way you are taking my furniture! Guards!'  Then the bouncers commense the quick and hopefully painfilled pummeling.

Just a thought.

Or possibly set the couch objects to immobile so they can't be moved. Chairs are another matter since you have to be able to get them from one table to the next, but I can't imagine the tables and couches and other large items being easily moved around a busy bar.

Either that, or y'all don't peek when I steal the actual bar itself and bring it on over to my place!

Bestatte's Room.

You say at your table, in sirihish:
   "Aye...  been pretty quiet---."

The pointy-headed half-giant has arrived from the west, dragging a plush velvet couch behind him.

You say at your table, in sirihish:
   "That's...  uh...  strange?"

Dragging a plush velvet couch behind him, the pointy-headed half-giant walks north.

I have NO idea. It'd be like..........well I can't think of anything it'd be like :P

I kept imagining a group of HGs suddenly jumping around the Barrel while a few people threw the couches up the stairs and then over the balcony :P

What next? Someone steals the bartender?
Title: Stealing Furniture
Post by: Tlaloc on March 08, 2003, 07:03:17 PM
I've noticed, myself, that people seem to loose thier minds when it comes to stealing furniture. Once when I was playing, I walked into a home which was supposed to be fully furnished. It had recently been burgled by a burglar and everything but the bed was gone.

In the time it took me to run out of the house, find the owner, tell them that the house had been looted, and brought them back, the bed had been taken too.

This means that a thief actually took at least TWO trips to completely loot a home. Is this completely realistic behavior for a thief?

Yes, we could make the couches so you can't take them. We could also make it so that anyone who steals the couches becomes incrimated, caught, and beaten up by a pair of nasty bouncers, and automagickally launched into P'Tar Ken Village. However, the point is: we shouldn't have to do that. Its a waste of time for us, and really...the players should have more respect for the game (and themselves) to do that.

Sure, why not? Set him up in a corner of your room. Free drinks! Hey, actually, let's put him in Bestatte's room, too. And then I'll steal her keys.

I'm sorry to break the IC status of this absolutely awesome plotline, but I just can not contain myself anymore.

All the furniture, the bartender, the bar... it's all been done.  In fact, any furniture in any home or estate you enter has been fully replaced by organically grown replicas, thanks to The Furniture Liberation Army of Allanak.

Slowly, stealthfully... usually under the full cover of Jihae, we cruise the streets of the beautiful southern city, claiming freedom for every impoverished chair, every enslaved couch, every tortured nightstand, table, countertop.  You 'moving folk' will no longer have the upper hand in the figurative sense!!!  In fact, we may decide to just remove your hand(s) all together!  ESPECIALLY THAT GUY IN THE BAZARR.

So just remember, next time you see someone lean back in a chair and it creaks... that's not just stress on the wood.  That's a call for help, from the leafed avengers!

ALLANAK WAS MADE ON THE ASHES OF OUR ANCESTORS, AND FROM IT SHALL RISE A NEW AGE WHERE FURNITURE RESTS ON THE BACKS OF THE OPPRESSORS.

Oh oh oh and we can steal the fountain in the fountain building and grab the templar and name him Raul!

Bestatte and Delirium's Back Yard
There's a bocci court in the back, a cabana off to the side, and a lot of trees and bushes and flower gardens and stuff.
A gushing jacuzzi is here, maintained by Raul the Pool-boy Templar.

Any thief worth his weight wouldn't have snuck it past the bartender, but rather would have taken it up the stairs, through the casino and lowered it off the balconey.

I must confess, however, that I have been tempted to have someone steal a piece of furniture from the one of the taverns for me.  Are you telling me that if I want a particular piece of furniture that there's an easier way to get it than by stopping at the furniture shop every week hoping a burglar has brought in some new inventory and then complaining to the shopkeeper about his lack of variety and entreating him to build the piece I want?

If you want a particular type of chair, seek out a Kadian or drop the mud email if it's something you can't get from Kadius.

There are craftable chair(s?) in the game, as well.

I can actually think of a couple of instances where it WOULD be IC to steal furniture from a tavern (all involving magick). However if you are going to do crazy stuff like this, for the love of god, e-mail the mud account saying "It'd be IC for me to steal the furniture for reasons X, Y and Z" and depending if it's realistic or not, the Imms'll probably let you.

By e-mailing the mud it stops being a big headache for the Imms and becomes a really funny RP event that causes rumors and confusion to spread through the city.

Hell with the furniture, I want to see John steal the whole bloody tavern.

from a doorway to the south come the scents of grilling meat and alcohol.

A barren lot. [E, S]
There are many confused looking, low-rent, seedy people here, milling about and mumbling about liquor.  The ground is packed hardscrabble, and appears to have once held a building of some size.  There is a smaller lot directly south, with some elves around a campfire singing koombaya, while to the east come the sounds of snoring.

Quotewe shouldn't have to do that.

I think you should.  If people are going to get bent out of shape over furniture getting stolen then something has to get coded to prevent it.  How many people play Armageddon over the course of a year?  1000?  Even if 99.9% of the players use common sense  there is still going to be a serial couch thief out there.  To expect otherwise is just asking for trouble.

Well a helper once told me that to be a successful thief, ya should set up a replica of the place ya gonna rob.

Perhaps this thief is taking that same advice literally?

I didn't take the couch out of the bar....but my character more often then not would RP playing darts for a while and then walk off with one or two in his pocket...

There is a shop that pays 15 sid for one...and this was too tempting for a very poor guy to pass up...2 darts paying for stable costs and water.

Is this the same thing? If so I won't do it again...although...he's dead so I guess I won't do it again period...

Stealing darts is okay, I don't really think those darts are all that great for non-dartboard use. Unfortunately sleight of hand doesn't cover putting objects into containers to my knowledge, because that'd be cool to palm things into your cloak and make off with them. It really does make sense though, so that way a thief doesn't have to steal something from someone and keep it in their inventory so that they don't have to risk putting it into a container and having someone recognize it, you know, just from the put echo.

Oh, just a thought...

If someone stole the couch to keep in in their home, then you could contact the person in charge of renting houses. My guess is that person would be able to tell you who rented that home last, from there you might be able to find out who pulled of the great Barrel caper.

I'd suggest adding no-take flags to objects that load into the taverns each reboot (IE: the bars/tables/couches), since it would make sure no one pulls any more twink-attacks on the local taverns.
