I think it's cool too, but a reminder isn't violating the rules from my experience. TMS was watching Achaea very closely for a while because they -were- rewarding voting. They forced Achaea to stop that with a threat of removing it from TMS altogether. So, I think if Achaea was breaking any more rules they'd still be watching closely.

Xyllomer was my first MUD. It's in Germany and I played it for over a decade. Did you know RPI doesn't just tally weekly votes? If you look, underneath that, there is a "Contest ranking, contest votes" that shows your total place, and total number of votes. So just because your weekly vote disappears every sunday, doesn't mean it doesn't count later if you miss a week!

The problem is that I also play on another mud that is much much lower in the ranking, so I tend to vote for that mud before I feel bad about it...
The question is, is it better to vote for a dying mud and try to bring in a few more players in or vote for a 'popular' mud that is already in the Top 10 and if people wanted to play on it they would already had seen it by now... Hmmmm..

It's beating us by -14- places right now on TMS. If you continue to look there, you will notice the site mentions nothing about role play, simply talking about it's player run shops and massive lewt.
Now, ask yourself this, do you want to play at this MUD? I don't. Just my opinion. So, with you new-found hatred and jealousy of this MUD I COMMAND YOU TO VOTE UNTIL WE BRING THEM DOWN AND STEAL THEIR LEWT!
Another thing is that most of the muds in the top ten also offers you in-game bonuses each time you vote for them, so pretty much every players on the muds are voting twice a day.
I know even some of the RPI muds at rpimud.com or whatever the address is does that as well, and that is why they beat Armageddon.
Maybe if Armageddon started offering 1 karma point for every hundred of votes I've placed I'd be a little more tempted to vote, as well. *grins and is teasing*

I thought offering in game rewards for voting was against the rules of these sites - Malken, do you have proof?
They are sneaky and good about it :) They tell you that they aren't allowed to offer rewards for voting but they still ask for you to be in-game and logged in before you vote so that they know who voted for them and who doesn't.
Then they have an entire series of tutorials on how to add a #trigger to your zmud so that every 12 hours you'll automatically vote even if you aren't in front of the screen to do so.
So no, it's not illegal, but it's still a pretty smart way to make sure that most of your players do vote, tho ;)
But I also read of another mud in the RPIMUD.com webpage that offers in-game rewards for voting and/or reviewing their mud. I don't want to start a mudding war, tho, so I won't name names but I'm sure you can go and find it out easily.
I know some of the games like Threshold will pop onto their global channel and nag, nag, nag about everyone needing to vote RIGHT NOW when they dip low. Bugged the crap out of me. This is not something we would ever do.
I think that our rank and the amount of giths on the North Road should be directly related.

We apparently got the position because the previous 10th, Crimson Moon, wasn't actually a mud but a browser-based RPG, and because they were giving their players in-game currency for voting, so TMS took them off the list.
Go vote on RPImud.com too. We're sitting in 3rd place with 13 votes, number 2 has 17 and the first place game only has 20 votes (plus it's listed as in beta.) It doesn't feel like we have as big a presence on that site and its forums as we should, given our numbers. We can do better!

I've noticed a seeming correlation with discussion posts on the GDB of late, and our position on TMS. There's a concerning lack of interest in discussion except among the same maybe dozen people.
I'm apparently out of the loop. No idea what "ban-wave" you're even talking about.
It feels wrong somehow to suggest that unpopular staff decisions and conduct could lead to a decrease in voting, but it also seems obvious. Most disturbing to me in recent times is the stifling of staff criticism on the GDB under the guise of a "no discussing moderation activities" rule. I, too, am out of the loop on this "ban wave", likely due to said policy.
Staff, you guys really shouldn't be looking to Tuluk for your community management strategy.
All that said, I also suspect that "Trump Malaise" is a real thing that is generally depressing Americans' moods and motivation.
Admittedly, its also the post-Holiday season where people are back into classes and preparing for February/March/April breaks and dsuch. But going from top-5 contender to 'can't break top-20", there's something odd. Moreso than the 20-ish less people a week we're seeing.
I vote less frequently than I used to, which was three times a day like clockwork. But that's because I've got more going on, not because of some ban I've only heard about here. Sometimes fitting one more thing into my day is simply impossible, no matter how small it is.
Plus it was seeing the why do you vote thread every day that reminded me.

Nah its cool. I just noticed I've been super negative of late, and wanted to at least pepper it with a bit of "There could be something else, too!" before Those Who Shall Not Be Angered decide my negativity is worth a ban, rather than a discussion.

Frankly the game needs some excitement around it. An HRPT or guild reform or something big. Going 5 years between every HRPT seems a little unambitious.
Personally, I stopped voting daily -because- we dropped out of the top 20. It seems pointless to even try at this point. BUT! I'll definitely try to pick the habit back up from the 1st of March onward. Vote thread reminders help.
I've noticed that Reiloth isn't posting anymore, and this concerns me because he's like, one of my favorite players in the game. If there is indeed a ban wave going on, staff - pretty please reconsider. We need good, active roleplayers. Maybe there's a different solution to whatever it is that's going on. The loss of good roleplayers punishes all of us. :'(

I read a great MUD article the other day, and IRE was the ONLY thing they even deigned to talk about.
Also with great players like Taven leaving. Hard to keep up morale. Especially when they cite things like differences with staff as the reason they're leaving.

It seemed to be more for an ongoing trend and multiple past bans rather than one single instance.
It was also just a GDB ban, which he has been banned from for extensive periods in the past.
Just seems like a waste of staff time and effort to go after our vets. Maybe if he was actually breaking forum rules when he was banned or something I'd understand it. But this sort of thing is what makes people have disagreements with staff and want to stop playing.
"Just a forum ban." doesn't really mean much when you're creating an us vs. them atmosphere that forces staff to butt heads with players for relatively minor shit.

Harshlands, who used to be in the top 30-40 is now #17 because a lot of ex Arm players are now playing it instead (I'm not playing either, just sayin')
I think that Reiloth is one of those players who get suddenly super excited about Arm then plays and posts a lot for a little while and then disappear again for months/years. I've seen that happen a lot lately with other ex vets, including me.

I don't know how you do it but I feel like each time you announce that you voted, Armageddon goes down by 5 ranks on TMS.
New players might not know how to get the vote to count on The Mudconnector, so I'll splain:
1. Go to themudconnector.com and create an account, if you don't have one. If you do have one, log in.
2. Go to the Arm page that has the vote button, and click it. This *should* take you to the vote page, where you have to submit your actual vote.
3. I always like to look at the ratio of In and Out. While you wouldn't expect 100 votes in to mean 100 people checked it out, its still an interesting stat.

I think last month we proved how high we can get when someone is constantly reminding us to vote, because we don't all have the automatic "Open up that website when I open my browser" add-on. This month, there has been less reminders on voting, so we're taking a beating.

What I find interesting this time around is we're getting a LOT less Out-Ratio than we were before. Even though our votes are decently up there, people aren't clicking through as much as others.
Are player-voters on other MUDs inflating the Out-numbers? Is Armageddon just so "well known" that people don't need to click through?
Have any stats been run for our big voting run from August?
I noticed the lower out-ratio as well, even ones with half the votes have the same number which is wierd.

Friendly reminder to do you a heckin vote, and also if you can to put out the good word on social media (twitter, reddit, facebook, hell, fetlife for all I care, go wild you kinksters). Remember this game is entirely not-for-profit and paid voluntarily without the use of advertisements at all, and we got to where we are today with two things: an exemplary reputation for a satisfying roleplaying experience, and word-of-mouth.
So please, go vote, and go tell anyone who might be listening about us. As someone who's worked in sales for years and years I can promise you, cold-canvassing is such an effective means to get the word out to people about things.

I went pretty ham that month trying to get people in. Heck, I nominated us to be on /r/MUD for the monthly winner (which we'll never be, because of bad press).

(Bear in mind, 'new accounts created' seems to represent just people who went so far as to create a new account, not necessarily people who logged in.)
I'm not sure what 'that month' refers to, though, so that's about as helpful as I can be.
I did a bit more digging, and there is a site called mudstats.com that uses the Mud Server Status Protocol to track login data (going back to 2009 for Armageddon, with some pretty big gaps). Here's a picture:

Two things to note:
1. Our login numbers seem to be the same as Spring/Fall 2012 and Spring 2009.
2. If we want to learn from history, it might be worth reflecting on what occurred during Fall 2012/Spring 2013 to facilitate such a massive bump in logins.
I wasn't around in 2012, but I have a hunch that the upswing was owing to positive reviews on mudconnect, at least in part. You can see that there are 6 reviews from 2012-2013.

While I don't trust MSSP to always provide the best stats, what this is showing is that over a decade span, we're barely retaining players. We had a 2 year period where things looked decent, and now we're back to where we were ten years ago.
Is this a ... GOOD thing? Is this going to be a "MUD players are few and far between so we're doing fine" or is this a "even with new players coming in, we're barely stagnating"?
The data above only shows "average" players by season but this past year has seen a steep dropoff.
Arm 2.0 did a good amount of damage to player numbers that was compounded by staff-player tension. I would not be surprised if we are recovering from those issues still, which is further compounded by those who are so bitter about a game on the internet that they devote quite a lot of time and effort toward "bad press".
MUDs will always be a niche genre and advertisement will always be important. I would never have known this game or even genre existed if it wasn't for word of mouth from friends who played. I believe this is being addressed by the player publicity group. As for the rest, time will tell.
Any press is good press.
Earned bad press is still earned.
I'd say I miss the "Good old days" but I feel like around here, they're cyclical. There are pushes, waves of intrigue and entertainment, followed by lulls as the ones who put their time and passion into the good times can't do it forever.

Right now, we have 28 votes on TMS. That's the equivalent of 3.5 of us voting twice a day. I feel like there have to be more than three and a half people who care about drawing in new players enough to click a button.

Our numbers for this time of year are the lowest they've ever been (well since our record keeping starts in 2010), both in terms of unique logins and new accounts created. This, coupled with the fact that we are barely breaking #10 on TMC, suggests to me that we need to vote more.

The good news: Achaea only has 84 outs, just 4 more than we do, yet they have around 70+ more votes than we do. What does this mean?
It means fewer people are using the voting list to check out their website, proportionate to the number of people who actually vote for it.
It means - that Armageddon is more interesting (or at least intriguing) to a higher percentage of list-viewers than they are.

I voted but, I have to say there has to be a better way to advertise than this. TMS seems rigged af, the number 1's ins seemed to have jumped by a couple hundred overnight. TMC, well that's the same place where they advertise games as role playing enforced when there is no roleplay whatsoever.

The short answer though is yes, the majority of our new players, far and away, come from these two sites. We know this because of the data we collect from new players (where you found us). Over time the trend is extremely clear.
It really works! In fact, if you'd like to take a look at our current numbers, you can go to our homepage and click "more news" in the lower right hand corner. If you scroll all the way down on that, you'll see New Accounts. This week and last week have seen a massive boost in player numbers there from December when we weren't even on the TMS top 20 and we were only 9th on TMC.
To check previous weeks, use the back button. Voting is MASSIVELY EFFECTIVE! That doesn't mean we aren't up for more ideas, though.
That's cool, I didn't even know that was there. I tend to only check Reddit periodically, because it's kind of like 4chan lite, at least to me. But even with reddit, I think Reiloth pointed out that Arm has never been chosen for Mud of the month, even though it supposed to be completely random, yet a couple of muds have been featured more than once.
I meant something more in the vein of branching out from the more traditional methods like TMC and TMS. There is a guy that does mud podcasts. Why not ask him to do a review? There is a Mu* forum that is very active called Musoapbox that has an advertisement section. Retro gaming is kind of big now, why not do a YouTube let's play of Armageddon, but instead of doing gameplay on the regular server, use a test server and explain that this is what typical gameplay is like. You could also use the let's play as a tutorial.
I understand that voting is useful, just that you know...might be time to try other things too.
I think the Musoapbox is a great idea and I welcome you to write up something for us there.
Can you give me a little more information about the guy that does MUD podcasts? To be honest, I don't listen to a lot of podcasts. Okay, I don't listen to any podcasts. Yeah, and it's not weird at all that we had five votes when I voted last night, but three when I checked this morning.
So, are we not supposed vote for our phones at all? I usually vote for my desktop at work, and then on my mobile phone. I never remember to go to a second time from the same device. Is that an issue?
I think you can vote from anyplace convenient as long as you are obeying the rules of voting.
I think Staff is likely more concerned with the person or persons who are inflating the votes by hundreds of numbers for some reason, not people voting from home and from work or from their phone while they're on the pot.

I haven't seen us at all ever since someone cheated to get us in the #1 spot. Maybe we are still being penalized for it.

I'm going to take a chance and agree with triste and admonish myself for being a shitty voter. I used to be great about it. I will try to regain my voting awareness.

I've been annoyed for years this thread consistently covers up more relevant threads. I find out that things are going on much slower because I'm less inclined to scan the whole forum as often as I click new links. I hate to poopoo a tradition but there' better subforums to host this thread on, as it stands its spam.

While I agree that this sub-forum may not be the
best place for this thread (as you are correct about the description of the sub-forum, which I honestly hadn't really thought about - I was just commenting on the preexisting thread).. But, after reading the descriptions of the other sub-forums, I'm not sure that it
would fit anywhere else either? What would be your suggestion?
I'd be happy to post reminders somewhere else, or I guess stop all together if that's the general consensus.. However I've had quite a few people express thanks at these reminders. The only reason I do it is because it helps me remember to vote if I am posting reminders here too, but I can stop.
