Noncombatant indie. Combatant clanned comes in second.
I kind of want to see what people would choose if they had to stick with one thing on an average day.
Do you mean in real life? Because otherwise...this may not be the forum for that...
...Whoops X)
Combatant sidekick usually clanned.
Noncombat, mostly clanned.
Combat clanner.
Second non 'combat' indie. ::)
combat indie!
- combat clanned!
Combat clanned. Probably 75% of my characters.
50/50 between non-clanned Combat & clanned Socio-Political roles
I like a loosely-structured pseudo-clan situation. Where my character would have a lot of interaction with clans, but not necessarily be members of them.
I also like when my character have combat skills and -can- use them, but I'm not a big combat-heavy player.
Combatant clanned, fighting/sparring with others seems to keep me playing my PC longer. A crafter PC, clanned or un would be second for me.
I think combat wins these internal and mental arguments for me every time. I've had long lived characters on both spectrums (Not as long lived as some of the players around here have had, mind you), and I just can't live without the combat. You need to be banking noobs for boots at least once a week.
---> Combat roles can be other roles when you want them too. There are stints without fighting.
---> Non-combat roles can never be combat supporting, and you likely will not be defending yourself from any assassin/warrior past noob status playtime. Plus the wildlife issues are atrocious.
---> Lastly, sometimes shitty role-players don't need excuses to ruin scenes with combat. I like to be able to punish these fools.
So far independent combat has been the most fun here. I keep trying to make clanned combat work though. It's been great on other games. But here or anywhere else, my favorite thing of all has been leading large groups in battle. What can be more exhilarating than that?
I've only had one noncombatant that I really loved playing. That was on another game, I don't think the things that made him intriguing are available in Arm.
I very much enjoy the rush of combat and I don't care for crafting too much, so I'll probably keep exploring different combat roles.
Don't care what part of the spectrum it's on as long as it's a needy, over-emotional and crazy breed.

I like playing combat clannies, the leaders behind the leaders.....right hand type people. I enjoy teaching new players the ropes through combat clans even if they themselves are not combat oriented. That's fun for me. Teaching but not having so much of the responsibility to create plots, but instead to simply build upon started plots. This may have a lot to do with my busy IRL schedule, but that's how I am right meow.
I love joining someone else's plot and really trying to make it happen. Even more fun then fuelling my own.
This goes as other I guess, but I actually find I enjoy trying to engage newbies and mold them into nefarious Armageddon playas4lyfe.
Otherwise more generally, I tend to enjoy clanned roles more (though this becomes very challenging when I'm playing off-peak/inconsistent hours).
I tend to have the most fun with anything clanned.
Clanned, combat, non-leader.
I wanna spec app for one of those normally-NPC bodyguards one day.
I am alright with leadership roles, but generally prefer to be more of a right hand man or sergeant-type. In some places, sergeant means leader, and that's not where I like it.
Almost always combatant though. Even if they rarely fight.
My favorites so far have been a clanned combat leader(ish), a clanned combat far-from-leader, a noncombatant clanned and a noncombatant unclanned.
I guess that means 'other' or 'no favorite!'
Sausage is my preferred roll. Flaky pastry and tomato sauce.
Red Storm is my preferred role. Combat or Social. Clan or Independent. Leadership is very interesting but it can be very tiring so I don't usually seek it out but enjoy it when it evolves naturally.
i kill the scrab and sel lteh shell and i hasve two cisterns of water that i use for bathing and one to drink
Clanned combatant.
Even when I play non-combatants, I tend to have a combat class. And I almost never play non-combatants. And I almost never play unclanned.
I've spent a combined total of over five real life years playing combatant characters in clans or tribes. It is my typical preferred role.
But my absolute favouritest character thus far was my only non-combatant non-magicker.
I prefer to play a mundane role that has no real start goal and grow and sharpen things as I go.
In terms of combat vs non-combat, I haven't played any strictly non-combat roles since 1999 or something. However I think most of the fun I get out of Arm only loosely related to what my roles were capable of doing with a weapon. Having an impact on other people's RP for good or for ill is the best, especially if you can cross pollinate ideas and see new and unexpected things happen.
I've never played a merchant. Or, actually...I've never played a non-combat role. It really doesn't interest me. And I prefer tribal above all else, and then indie after that. I've tried a couple clans, but tend to enjoy the freedom of indie life. Also tend to prefer mundane. I've had some interesting magickers, but I always end up wanting to play mundanes again.
Noncom clanned.
Someone has to play froofy nobles or their underlings.
Well, okay. They might be combat guilds, but I rarely use their aggressive skills.
I hate magickers. I haven't ever had fun playing one, in terms of skilling up or enjoying their social limitations.
I really like iso roles. Is that weird? I would say that I enjoy at least half of my play time to be solo rp.

I played two merchants in combat roles and it was actually a lot of fun. But maybe I'm weird.

No.
I need to get back into the habit of making self reliant PCs with my wonky play times.
What is this non-combatant you speak of?

I think it's a type of fish
Can't get into combatant indies for some reason, because in my unimaginative mind that always boils down to "shitty hunter with a 30% chance of surviving their first week alive" and I'm just not into things like archery and tracking.
Combatant clanneds are wonderful, though. There's a point, and all that, to the endless sparring, even if its usually not your own. I'd like more time to solo rp, or otherwise simply do something beside sparring or rping cleaning my armor, but regardless its a role that comes alive for me.
Noncombatant indies are like my default. In the right job niches, unlimited creativity. In the wrong job niches, poverty and desperation roleplay. A mix of both, even. If I had to criticize the role in terms of my preferences I'd say I usually have a lack of danger that I can logically get into, and danger makes for some damn good roleplay. And when you live long enough, and people realize you are neither part of nor seeking employment, then they tend to let a few more hints drop about their own plots, seemingly without reservation in terms of who my pc is talking to, it seems they do this more than my combatant clanneds get to see, because I have those loyalties, however personally distant I might be from them. That might just be me, and who I play though. I once played a dangerous and volatile person, and five people emoted having their facial features concealed around me in one and a half days.
Well. I love playing solo, rogue magickers. I definitely wasn't one of those dudes who gave their karma back during the Great Karma Off or whatever.
But, y'know, I'm really horrible at them, mostly, and they don't tend to be my long lived characters.
My most successful characters in clans have been merchants, probably because I just get too bored with combat characters. Even the prospect of them seems kinda boring, which is likely a lack of imagination on my part, but hey... that's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
I dunno what it is, but if I try to play a city based character who doesn't have some sorta crafting skill or something codedly active to do, I'm probably going to get bored. Maybe that's just the way my play has developed from being invited to/responding to GMH roles, I'm not sure.
So yeah... mostly solo rogue mages or clanned merchants. I may be wrong, but I think the only warrior character I've had that reached over 10 days was my second character ever... that I made in 1999.
I tend to start out as an indie and get snapped up by a clan when they make friendly overtures. Strange, huh?
I have a very weak spot for down-on-their-luck magickers. I play variations on the 'normal person inherits more power than they should have' trope, mundane or supernatural, more often than not.
Also, in line with what Kronibas said, I play thieves, vagabonds, unseemly sorts, ideally in the 'rinth. If you're not in a place where I have to be cunning or die, I tend to languish and do nothing, and that doesn't make for a fun game.
I love to explore, so indie combat types always and forever. If they have a reason to prefer to stay independent, all the better, because then nobody can tell me not to wander off across the known exploring.
Coming in second would be clanned combat types, provided the clan hasn't got a schedule, and whoever is able to organize regular trips out into the world is active during my playtimes.
I've got a love affair going on with sneaky types, too, but I can't for the life of me ever get them to work out in play.

I think the best way to get a good sneaky dude started is to join a clan like the Kuraci Fist or the Byn. Or a gypsy.
Best probably isn't the right word, but nicest for using your sneaky skills while still being able to actively use the combat side of the sneakiness, which is hazardous at best outside of clans.
Can't handle schedules, unfortunately.

Well, if you're sneaky, you don't have to! ;)

I am tied. I like Indies normally, with two exceptions. I like my merchants to be clanned most of the time, just because it gets boring if not, and Desert elves I like clanned (It's my niche and favorite RP on arm)
Ka?
In general, my favorite PCs to play are indies: rangers, merchants, gicks or some combination thereof.
Ironically, my actual favorites have been a GHM Agent, a Fale noble, and a tribal Krathi. Go figure.
