Title: Send More Kudos!
Post by: Troicha on December 16, 2007, 02:11:46 AM
As the title says, send more kudos. Kudos are important, they make the receiver feel warm, fuzzy, and appreciated, which is especially important when you appreciate them. I know of AT LEAST one recent player who had decided to quit, but changed his mind after recieving kudos from another player after a string of intense scenes.

Kudos are important.

Send more kudos!

Just be sure to do that, instead of claiming on the GDB that you will, and then forgetting or being too lazy.

Encourage a noob by sending kudos. Sure, their emoting isn't that great and they don't know anything about the game world, but they are TRYING SO HARD. Let them know that you OOCly appreciate them for daring to attempt this most challenging, most rewarding of MUDs.

Encourage a leader by sending kudos. Let them know you see their efforts to make the game more fun and more involving for you.

Encourage a clannie by sending kudos. Let them know it brightens your gaming day to see them online.

Etc. Just do it. There are no good reasons not to send kudos.

Guys, guys, guys.

Let's not argue. I think that what we clearly need to do here is listen to Gimf's advice, band together, and send me lots of kudos.

There should be 'stupidos' too, for people whose only contribution to the GDB is constantly whining, 'There's no helpfile on that!'

But, um, there's no helpfile on 'kudos'.

UPDATES, TWO SECONDS LATER: Ah-ha! The web request tool! Ignore me.

How many have you sent? According to my data... :D ...my ratio of sent to received kudos is 2.5:1 currently. So maybe you just need to send some, and that helps remind people in general to send kudos.

There have been times when I've neglected to send kudos for a PC I love, and then that PC dies, and I keep procrastinating, and I never send the kudos. And that's really a bummer, to remember months later that the other player didn't get kudos because I was a schlump :(

I'll admit I tend to only send kudos after I've had a particularly memorable scene with a PC or they're a new player who seems to be putting a ton of effort into their PC. I feel like I often slack on sending kudos to people for being consistent--clan leaders who make my OOC life easier, for one.

I remember I was in a particularly stagnant spot with a PC--not quite contemplating storing, just not quite enjoying it as much as I used to. Then I checked my email after about half a month of not doing so and discovered two kudos that I'd completely missed. Looking over what other people liked about my PC and focusing on those facets of her personality aided quite a bit in breaking the monotony.

I am not staff, so take what I saw with a grain of salt, but you should realize that the staff has to sort and send all these kudos.  They have to match names and sdescs to to accounts and bang off an e-mail.  I am not saying don't send kudos, but you are likely to make someone grumpy if they find 100 kudos that need to be sent out in the morning with stuff like "that emote when you smoked that spice was pretty good".  I guess what I am saying is that you are making work for someone else, so if you are going to send one off to someone who isn't staff, maybe you should make sure it is worth while.  I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, just realize that it takes a someone a little work to push these things through.

I'll chime in here to say that kudos shouldn't be sent for small stuff. The only thing worse than no kudos would be kudosaturation. I want kudos to continue to mean something.

I surely don't think it hurts to send Kudos.
At very, very worst you're making someone feel better about their play.

Don't lie, but if you rp semi regularly with someone and enjoy it, rarely rp with someone but saw them participate in a really cool scene, or whatever, tell them why. Hell, let them know if you love their description.   Speaking as  a fairly new player here: How else are we supposed to know when something we're doing is right?

Make sure you're honest and that you use their name and sdesc and I'm sure the hassle the imms receive will be worth the benefit of actually making someone else feel good about their rp.  I mean, they put the tool in for a reason.  And their posts in the past have always encouraged, not discouraged kudos sending.  I don't think "excessively positive feedback" is a big problem for the community.  This isn't an economy, the influx of nice comments isn't going to flood the market and devalue them people!

Every time I've received one I've hit the mud with a renewed vigor, just knowing someone enjoyed rping with me.

And I'm going to try to find excuses to send a bunch more, just to spite all you people.

I agree. Send more kudos. Kudos are nice. Kudos are cool. And if you have a reason to send one - do it. IMMs would not give us a tool to send them in if they didn't mean us to...well...send them.  ;D

Kudos are awesome! Just got my first one. Thanks whoever you are. They make you really feel appreciated, like your character actually means something.      I would still love to get a coded kudo.  ;)

The closest thing I've gotten to a coded kudo, would be a staff note, that had a statement with "Awesome" at the end. I laughed reading it, and thank you for that moment, whoever that was.  8)

Just a staff perspective on these, as some of us Staff were talking about Kudos.

First, they are awesome, yes you should send them in. Nothing makes other players feel more special.

But, we have been getting a lot of quick one liner Kudos that don't really say much and take a up a good deal of staff time to resolve. So please if you are going to send someone a Kudos, have the following:

At minimum, one full sentence on why the player deserves the Kudos. Either for consistent RP, for being a responsible player, for being a part of a really awesome scene... Ect...

The one line "You rocked that scene last night, thanks!" is not a good Kudos. Or the "I liked your character, good job." also, not    the best use of staff time. Try to be detailed as to why you are giving the compliment and make it meaningful to the recipient.

Second, please put in the SHORT DESC of the Character you are sending the Kudos to, and a name if you have one. It is -Super- hard for us to find out who you are writing in about on just a name, (pssst... it might not be the right name) so a name and short desc will certainly ensure that your praise gets to the right source, quickly and effectively.

Lastly, Bundle Kudos! Send in a few at a time. We don't mind! You can put a few Kudos on one request. No need to send in five seperate ones. We will make sure they all get to where they are going as long as you have the right info for each so we can find the players.

So, with that said, we have gotten A LOT of kudos in the past week, which is great. So well done thread! You are keeping your staffers busy.

Could this advice be added to the text displayed for "Request Type: Game Related -- Player Kudos" please?

Yeah, I got a kudos via mudmail recently.  I kind of liked having them in my email inbox to hoard and read over when I need some love.  What gives?

I'm not sure why some kudos are getting sent by mudmail. Staff often comment people in game and give them kudos that way, but that is staff kudos, not player kudos.  Check again, it could be that you got kudos from a staff member?

I'd like to support what Qetesh mentioned earlier about sending kudos. We have set up a way for you to send kudos to each other and we definitely want you to use it. I don't want to discourage anyone from sending it, or place arbitrary restrictions but I do ask that when you send the kudos you feel it is merited, rather than just to fulfil a quota of feel-good-ness.

Believe me, I'm all for everyone feeling good but before you send that kudos take the time (as Qetesh said) to write more than one line, don't send it just to send it and include as much information about the pc as possible - keywords, name, clan etc.

While we like to send kudos they are one of the most time consuming requests, requiring staff to locate the account (not always easy!), send an email to the player and make notes on accounts.

I know of a staffer or two that does things via in-game mail.
I prefer to send via my account, and usually I do about 10-20 at a time.

A reminder:  please include at least a short description of someone.  If you cannot provide a name or short description, it's very likely we cannot find them.
In cases where there is not a name or short description, I will usually do some research to find the player to deliver the kudos to.
If it starts taking too long I'll just keep it and pat myself on the back for being a good Nyr.

In general, it seems to me like people are mostly sending kudos to the characters that their PCs like, and not to the PCs theirs hate.  Why not send them to your PC's nemesis?  If somebody works their butts off to make your PC's life a hell and succeeds, why not send them kudos for that?  If your PC gets killed in a way that makes you go, "Wow!" send kudos for it.  If that raider scared the piss out of your PC and left you standing in the wastes in your skivvies, send kudos.  Dig?

Maybe I'm also the only one who doesn't like to receive a kudos after someone kills me, it makes me feel like that player is telling, "Hah! I win, you lose, but great job for trying, anyway."

I think the problem with this is that generally, relationships that are antagonistic in nature don't tend to develop much.

A lot of people have decided my characters are their characters' enemies over the years. Interactions with the vast majority of them consisted of "PC X stands at the bar and glares at you when you're around." Or perhaps, "PC Y talks shit on you to a bunch of random people when you aren't there." There's no real interaction going on between the two 'enemies' or my PC might not even be aware of it at all.

If somebody decides they hate my character or my character's clan and they run around and PK a bunch of my clannies, they've succeeded in making my character's life hell... but if they haven't bothered to develop the antagonistic relationship or interact with me very much, I wouldn't really consider sending them kudos for it.

Unfortunately, I'd say 90% of the "enemies" my characters have ever had have been of this variety.

I agree with Fathi.  It just doesn't happen that much, at least not on the commoner level.  We are all too busy trying to survive.  The closet thing I have had to a "rival" PC was a little over a year ago.  During peak hours, this dwarf PC and I would both be waiting at the west gate of Nak to go sid mining, and we both had tents.  We got ill at each other for a while  and both blamed the other for over mining.  After about a RL week of this, we started making a game of it.  We would both go out and whoeveer had the most sid by dusk was the winner.  The catch was we had to be back inside the wall before the gates closed.  it was fun. I miss him :)  Ah happy thoughts.

And then there's the anonymous enemy...

You have absolutely no idea who it was, because you were blinded/unconsious/otherwise incapacitated and incapable of seeing and/or hearing a thing at the time.

So you can't even say "kudos to the guy who killed me" because you don't know if it was an awesome player, or a twink, or just some run of the mill unimpressive but not-twinky PK.

Two things.

1) I think I sent a kudos to the rival of one of my PC's once (if not I had good intentions of doing so!), it was a hate which lasted at least an IG year if I recall correctly.

2) I received a Kudos today (or opened it today, been a bit since I checked email). It gave me warm fuzzy feelings to have my PC acknowledged. Only wish it were possible to know who sent it so I could say thank you!

I tend to send to people I play around if they die, because I want them to know how awesome they were and to give them a boost into creating another PC.

I sometimes send to still living PCs... those that I love the RP with and know I probably won't see again.

Qetesh, what is the official opinion on bundling kudos, if there is one?

I've been told twice in the past NOT to put more than one kudos in the same request, but other staffers have encouraged it on the GDB at times.
Title: Re: Send More Kudos!
Post by: Qetesh on January 05, 2009, 08:35:56 PM
I think as long as you bundle them with the proper information, Ie: PC name & Short Desc, I can't see it being an issue with staff.  If you can't give all the proper info though, it can become an issue, because then you have a half complete request lingering around until someone can dig up the information.

So I'd say as long as you can give both a short desc and a name, you could bundle. If you can't, then put it in a seperate request. But I'll also defer to a higher power however, as they might have different thoughts.

I'd rather send a character kudos after maybe a week or so playing with him, rather than just last night. If I look forward to a guy being there when I log on, then that person deserve kudos. Or even if I get annoyed enough to gossip about him to other people, then it's well-played.

It's fine to send Kudos to dead characters, right?
I sent a few out :)

I like threads like these. I'd be hesitant to send kudos otherwise, because going to the request page is like meeting a templar.

I like getting kudos in my inbox, but, I'm always disappointed to at least a _small_ degree to find that there are no criticisms in there. Even a player complaint would be nice, maybe I'm doing everything right, but I seriously doubt it. Constructive criticism, even if misplaced, is always a great way to help a person build his role playing skills. So, that said, hopefully I'll get some bitchy complaints about how I didn't keep my accent up, or my magicker's cantrips were just a bit too overdone. Or that somebody hates the fact the even my ugly mutants are out-of-this world hot.

Nope.  Player complaints are complaints from players to staff about players.  That part of the player request system was made for that purpose, not to forward gripes and complaints directly from players to players.
However, if you have constructive criticism, hopefully you have something nice to say as well (hence constructive/kudos) and send it as a kudos; we'll send those along.

I do like getting criticism. I still remember the first criticism I got, from an imm, about me not emoting when crafting, and telling me about thinks and feels. That was great.. it really made me feel special because there was an imm watching me dying out there. It's what got me hooked onto this game and telling everyone about it. Would be nice if everyone put a little criticism in their kudos as well, since they know the character :)

What request type are you supposed to use for kudos? Only thing that seemed relevant was "staff kudos" in the list of request types for a new request.

Since I've started playing (June of last year) I've recieved 2 kudos and 1 point of karma, And
I think I have to agree with the folks that say Kudos > Karma in the feels. That may change
as I play more and become a 'veteran' player, wanting to play the bigger Karma classes and
whatnot. But as a newer player, receiving a 'thumbs up' from other players for my Pc's is
a real confidence boost. Especially because the Kudos I've gotten were for the two Characters
that I actually enjoyed playing, it was really cool to know that at least one other person that
played with them also enjoyed their time with my PCs almost as much as I liked playing them.
Also, some of the things that were said in the Kudoses (Kudosi?) were aspects of my PC that
I didn't even expect people to notice or consider as positives. It's really awesome to see another
persons interpretation of your character, and know that they liked playing with them especially
when it's so unexpected.

I once got kudos twice for the same character. I'll never have a pc that cool again. Before that I got kudos once I believe. I'm about 60% certain of these statistics, I've been playing too long to remember distinctly.

On the subject of Kudos and Death (and Majickal, iirc.)

My favorite set of Kudos came from when a group of Red Fangs (I believe Majickal and his merry band of bandits) found my Oashi Elite pokin' around in a cave in the shield wall and tried to capture me. We fought, and ran, and played American Galdiators - emote fighting on a climbing wall, and fell for quite a while. I fought them to the bitter end (purely through RP - I dont recall "kill" being used ever) and died, but it was such a fun scene I sent out kudos, and received 2 myself.

Quote from: IAmJacks to RedFangzsters
Just got tortured to death by three Red Fangs. It was freakin' sweet! Best death in years. -the diminutive, one-eyed elf -the pitch-dark, skull-braided elf -the dusky, dark-braided elf <- This guy especially. I emoted trying to reverse head-butt him while he was subduing me and he went with it and ACTUALLY released me, allowing me to hobble along and RP to further before I met my inevitable d00m. Great time.

Quote from: Red Fang to IAmJacks
A very awesomelicious scene although it had to end badly, but kudos to you for your avid participation. You've rped realistically and brilliantly even when pressured in a very nerve-wrecking scene. A very fantastic player :D

Quote from: Red-Fang Standing By to IAmJacks
That whole scene was absolutely brilliant, it went on forever I think because nobody involved wanted to see it end.

Memorable and glorious. You brought so much to the scene and just seeing so much awesome happen without solely the use of coded skills added so much flavor to the game in my eyes. Your headbutt I think sewn it up for me as the best scene I've been a part of for years. I'm sorry it ended with your pc seeing the great mantis head in the sky but I do hope that the end of his story was a memorable one.

I find I get kudos for certain characters and then for other characters they pass without a single bit of notice.

One of my favorite characters that lived a long time and was "deeper" and more interesting in my opinion than most if not all others I have had got only a single kudos in his entire life. He was around for over a RL year. The only kudos he received was two short sentences about one little thing he did.

I had another character that I felt wasn't nearly as deep that got six kudos and he lived half as long.

Most kudos I ever got for a single character was eleven, the character lived about eight months, and again, he wasn't as deep as some others I have played in my opinion that never got a single kudos.

People, send me more kudos for my deep introspective emotional characters. I need to balance some shit out. Thx.

Edited to Add: After reading this, I realize the problem might be I'm not a very good "emotional/introspective" roleplayer even though I think I am...hrrmmm.

Emoting more than you normally would. I've been there before and I constantly feel a pressure to emote my position and what my PC is scratching, if his arms are crossed...

I made great use of non-physical-emotes, which might not actually completely kosher but I got a great amount of joy out of.

Things like:

em looks like he doesn't particularly care of your joke.

em responds with silent scorn.

pem face twitches faintly, looking none too pleased.

em grunts softly, whether out of indifference or acknowledgement is hard to discern.

It's a bit power-emotey, becuase you're imparting insight into the mind of your character when emotes should technically be physical. It's the sort of thing you'd read in a book from that characters perspective. But you know what? I love that sort of shit.

I think you have to make them take specific actions that demonstrate that are fully aware of everything around them and just aren't talking.  For example the crew's all around talking about what they need or something hard to find or whatever.  At some point wandering out, then back in and plunking whatever is on the table, or slipping to the person during a quieter or time or something.

The pressure's on the pof QuietCharacter to make it worth it for others to go out of their way to include the QuietCharacter.  Usually folks will try once or twice and just move on.

I think implying feelings in emotes is fine if your character is particularly quiet. Human body language expresses things that it takes a spectacular novelist to even begin to describe.

I love that sort of thing too, and personally think it is great roleplay and not "power-emotey".   It can be near impossible to convey the subtle physical differences between a smile and a mischievous smile...  Why not just say it's mischievous and save everyone a lot of trouble?    I particularly like it when this sort of thing is layered into hemotes to add extra insights.  Such as:

The thin, uber-roleplaying man lifts his hand to cover his mouth as he stifles a yawn.

(Something about the yawn suggests that the thin, uber-roleplaying man is bored, rather than tired.)

This adds that body langauge factor that MeTekillot mentioned.  It isn't mindbending, it's just something an observant person might be able to pick up.

As this thread is active once more, I'd like to update a couple of previous staff suggestions for kudos as there are questions about them a few pages back.

Kudos shouldn't just be a minimum of one sentence.  If someone did something worth you taking the time to tell them, please take at least a little time to tell them.  A few sentences would suffice.  One-liner/one sentence kudos (or kudos otherwise so short they don't actually communicate a clear thought about what it is you liked about what the player or PC did) will likely be rejected.

Kudos should not be bundled.  Please send separate kudos.  If you bundle them all together, you have created a single request that takes quite a lot longer to resolve (we have to find every player in question, create several e-mails, and note several accounts), rather than several individual and smaller requests that can be done whenever a staff member has a few minutes of time to knock one out.  Bundled kudos will likely be rejected.

A good way to handle 'quietness' in my opinion, is to emote mannerisms or subtle reactions.  Quiet means they don't like to talk a lot, but that certainly won't stop a character from being dynamic in expressing thoughts, emotions, etc.  Even the shyest of people give away something in a social setting, unless they are an ice king/queen.

Let's maybe quantify the difference between a quiet character and performance anxiety, the latter being incredibly common.  Even with new PCs, it takes me a while to get in the groove of how they tick.

In my experience so far, I actually have wished i'd meet more mean PCs at times. I want to build rivalries and conflicts on my characters. Not always make friends. Things are a lot more interesting when you have conflicts that can devolve to fun barbrawls, then build up to more vicious intentions - and it doesn't always have to end with murder.

so keep playing mean characters :D, and I won't stop rping with someone because theyre mean ;)

Without any other context, this sounds like an account note that fits one of these categories:

a)  doesn't exist
b)  should be removed
c)  should be ignored

Rule 3 is literally "there are no rules against being extremely mean to others that your character may meet."

I refuse to believe that the bright, hard-working people who successfully streamlined the rest of the Request process are unable to streamline this as well.

I wouldn't mind if it required less to say in order to send a kudos. I'd send a lot more if I could just send something simple to a player like... Hey, player of Amos: I think your character is well played and I have fun with him. Kudos for blah blah something Amos did.

I'm not sure I could write a paragraph for every kudos I send, so I shy away from sending them to begin with.

You don't have to send a paragraph in?
ALl of my kudos that have been given were less than two lines.
Normally
"This player did X and that made my experience better, Kudos to them" and maybe I explain why it helped me as a player or something.

Thats it basically.

I sent someone a Kudos and it was the Kudos of death. They either logged or stored.

I haven't been able to play the last few days.  I'll be back for more kudos soon.

You don't need to write a paragraph. You can write one sentence, so long as it actually has meaningful content. For example, "I like your character" would not make for a meaningful kudos. Whereas, "Your emotes are colorful, your characterization is deep, and you plot the craziest plots ever," is a meaningful kudos.

Which is exactly why you folks should make kudos a command like bug and typo.

That way it's one less thing to have to go into the request tool for.

That would not make staff's job in resolving kudos any easier or less time-consuming. We need the request in the request tool.

TBH, I pay almost no attention to bugs, typos, and ideas. Far too busy doing other stuff that absolutely must get done. If kudos were an in-game command like that, they also would not get done, because there is very little tracking on those.

And that explains why none of my typos get fixed lol

To all you Sekrit Santas out there... Don't know what to give for the holidays?  Send More Kudos!

Tell that person character/staffer that has made your IG experience a little more fantastic thank you for the holidays!

It costs almost nothing (Thank you staff for delivering!) and will guarantee a smile every time one is opened.  Every.  Time.
