This problem seems to happen once a year, affecting only part of the player-base.  Perhaps some of the staff members could build tunnels into the MUD, that way we have alternate paths into the MUD when this happens.

Eeeh. The thread would suggest it's happening about every 2-3 months.

Lag is so bad the last three or four nights it's basically unplayable.

Seems the be at its worst while in groups.

My tracert comes back completely clean.

Even the GDB lags when the game is giving me lag spikes.

Also seems to only be bad after a certain time. Right after I get home from work, for the first couple of hours, it runs like a dream. Later in the night, it runs like hammered shit. Fifteen seconds of play, a fifteen second lag spike....over and over and over and over.

Also just tested this. It has to be the www.armageddon.org domain (or whatever). Even when I'm not logged into the game, the GDB will give me the exact same lag spikes on basically the exact same schedule as when I am logged in, for the same periods of time.

I can't even play GDB without the spikes.

That is more likely to be indicative of an error somewhere between you and both of the servers that run the two.

The Main site and the GDB are on different domains. And both work fine for me when someone else is lagging. It another one of those 50/50 in-between servers lag sessions we get from time to time, only this time it's on the other side.

I feel like a primitive person trying to described disease.

So, anything we can do about it or do we just not play for a while?

Run a traceroute or even better a program called MTR (My Trace Route) It will show you where the packet loss and/or latency is being caused. If its something at your ISPs end (anything up the hop just after the first hand-off to another provider) you could call them and have them investigate. Of course most of the time this won't work because they'll try to find a way to remove blame from themselves.

GDB was unreachable for me about 30 minutes ago.
