Glasshacker - What is it?

Started by Riev, June 04, 2024, 05:48:01 PM

I've been doing a lot of mining in FF14 lately, and I was thinking as I was mining obsidian: A mining pick is definitely a piercing tip, but Arm's glasshackers are chopping. And some of the shoddier ones are like ... a half-handled hacker or something?

... Can someone mspaint me what a hacker is supposed to look like because I can't brain it.

Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

It could be oversight, but I thought it made sense when I understood what the purposes of glasshackers are in Armageddon. While they are pickaxes essentially, they're pickaxes specifically for glass hunters. The tool develops more for who uses it.

The 'chisel' or 'wedged' side of a pickaxe like we might imagine is mostly for moving large amounts of of debris/soil/roots. In this case sand. The pointed parts of pickaxes are used mostly for material which can't be broken away easily. If the material you're breaking off (glass) isn't particularly hard and the available material for the tool isn't particularly sturdy over time and needs to be cheap for poor commoners (stone), then it's better tool design to not make narrow tools which wear down/break faster. Just using purely the 'chisel' part of a pickaxe would be not only perfectly reasonable but economical while meeting the needs of the profession and doubling as a grebber's tool(a hoe essentially).

I always imagined them like this, essentially just the 'back' side of a pickaxe, though some come with the 'pointy' end as well, which isn't as necessary for the general use glasshackers. That would be why it's chopping. That chisel/hoe end being used as a weapon.

That makes a lot more sense as far as the hacking-head.

Thank you kind internet stranger.

It's the thing you hack glass with. Otherwise, it couldn't be a glasshacker

I would think it's like a flint knapping piece on a handle, but glasshackers are by default axes so probably sharper.
