Tuluk Changes Discussion

I imagine there will be some discussion around the updated helpfile content as we publish.

Nice stuff.

I don't remember these earthquakes but definitely remember all the Spooky Shit that happened around Tuluk's closure, and I imagine there will be mention of that in later help files (Like City Tuluk). It might be nice to mention when these earthquakes were, roughly, before the opening of the gates (25 years before the gates re-opened, there were cataclysmic earthquakes that severely damaged Tuluk and its infrastructure, etc).

Overall the helpfile is helpful and reads nicely!

EDIT:
Speaking of the Tuluk Helpfile, it may be Helpful to split it into something like 'Tuluk: Ancient History' and 'Tuluk: Modern History'. The helpfile is already pretty bulky and information that is like cherry-on-top-nice-to-know but not relevant to even Tuluk before it closed, so it might be cool to have all of that in a different helpfile, and whatever new stuff that is the Most Relevant in the actual Tuluk Helpfile.

For people like me who are very familiar with Tuluk or the few iterations of Tuluk, it's comforting to read all that stuff, but for people who have never played in Tuluk (Which I'm realizing is actually a large part of our current player population) it may be helpful to separate the old-old from the new-new.

Without any estates and emporiums, wouldn't the GMH and Luir's be over influenced by Allanak? Perhaps it's going to be a plot point for them to rebuild. Otherwise it would seem to be missing that balance.

JFC, I'm trying to cram a whole year of work ahead of me in just a week just so I can be ready to play in the new Tuluk  ;D

I like that a bunch of the quarters have been axed! Tuluk always seemed a little too large for what it was, and shrinking its real estate is definitely a good idea.

I feel like this might be by design -- And maybe a cool beginning plot point for GMH / Northie Templars / Northie Nobles to entice them to come back.

I mean, by design, the economy of North v South is highly intriguing and profitable. Obsidian and Wood, a match made in heaven, imports + exports, markup, etc. So it's lucrative to be sure, but probably costly to rebuild holdings.

Man, I cannot wait for Tuluk to reopen.

I'd be surprised if Tuluk welcomed the GMH with open arms. To many, their submission to a southern army is likely seen as openly siding with Allanak.

Mrentaki Plains/Scrub, Tenneshi scrub, Malbken Gardens, Gorlen Plains, Reynolte Plains....all those rooms are inside the walls.  They used to have NPCs that were farmers...working them, although now it is just one overseer NPC it looks like, described as overseeing field slaves.

Tuluk opening has me all giddy. Especially liking the idea of SECT OF THE CRESCENT MOON. Having a potential advancement path for nobles can be a strong motivator. SHOPKEEPERS are something I also love playing around with. SoI and FEM had some of the best PC business setups, and I really miss those, and being able to play around with these in ARM without huge amounts of investment is going to be great. Loving these updates!

I got a couple questions:

"The fall of Tuluk" or "The Cataclysm" - 1998

1450 (Year 64 Age 19)
A terrifying and presumably magickal cataclysm strikes the city-state of Tuluk, leaving it to be nothing more than a pile of rubble and ruins. Over seventy thousand people are killed that day in what has since come to be known as the Fall of Tuluk. During the chaos, Precentor Kul manages to overthrow Precentor Isar and gains control over what little remains.

When was the Occupation of Tuluk of Allanak in real life, approximately?   2000 ~ APRIL 2002
1516 (Year 53 Age 20)
After forty years of Allanaki occupation, the Sun Legions of Tuluk launch a surprise attack on the Southern forces occupying the Gol Krathu region. Composed of members of the Sun King's Legions, the Rebellion, various human tribes of unknown origins, and hordes of hideously mutated and deformed creatures, the army successfully penetrates the Scaien Walls and liberates the land inside. The Allanaki Red Robes Sathis Valika and Aquila Nenyuk are slain in a duel with Isar, who is also mortally wounded during the confrontation. In the confusion, Kul himself is also cut down as the Tuluki forces make their way towards Luirs, liberating it from Allanaki occupation as well. Here, the Allanaki Red Robe Ihsahn Kasix and his units are caught between the Tuluki army and Kuraci militia. They are summarily executed.

1571 (Year 31 Age 21) - Winter 2006 Approximately?
Several meetings of the Tuluki Triumverate were held. The first abolished the tiers of noble houses and opened the noble quarter to public access. At the second meeting, it was reported that Muk Utep had awoken to find his city disturbed and had made some resolutions. His resolutions were to reopen the area near the Ivory Pyramid once known as the ruins, and rename it the Old Quarter. More significantly, he divided the city into fief-like divisions called qynar, which along with areas outside the city known as striasiri, would henceforth be administered on behalf of the city by noble governors appointed by the Lirathan order.

1596 (Year 56 Age 21) - Winter 2009 Approximately?
An earthquake strikes the whole Known, being felt everywhere and by everyone. Then, a large shape crosses the sky and seems to settle over Suk-Krath, bringing complete darkness to the world. In the darkness, moisture falls from the air, and for a brief time, rain comes to the Known.

As the darkness stretches on over days and into a week, the streets of the cities become dangerous. In Allanak, rioters set fire to buildings and lynch gemmed; in Tuluk, crime runs rampant. Nobles and templars for the most part remain huddled in safety.

At the end of a full week of darkness, the shadow lifts from Suk-Krath to take its own place in the sky as a black moon which reflects very little light. Shortly, a series of further crises strikes both cities. In Tuluk, repeated waves of murky water crash in from west of the Scaien Gates, leveling Red Sun Commons, destroying many buildings, leaving thousands dead, and flooding UnderTuluk. While in Allanak, the city comes under attack from fire elementals as a volcano rises in the southwest, obliterating the critical farming villages of Menos and Taki and destroying the nearby camp of the Al'Seik tribe. In and around Luir's, creatures of stone cause death and destruction while fierce, tearing winds kick up.

In the aftermath, Allanak suffers massive, devastating starvation; Tuluk struggles to rebuild, while UnderTuluk and its people are no more. The halflings seem to be gone from the Grey Forest, and kryl and things previously unknown move in to take their place in the vastly changed landscape. The Al'Seik are nearly completely lost and must take up residence in the tents of the Arabet. And it is rumored that even in the alleys of the Labyrinth, changes were seen after the dark.

1627 (Year 10 Age 22)  - Summer 2013
'The Battle of Tyn Dashra'
A small army of Allanaki soldiers establish camp at Ten'Sarak. In reaction to the potential threat of an Allanaki move, the Tuluki fortress known as Ayun Iskandir sees increasingly high activity. Tensions and numbers rise on both sides as the two armies set out for Tyn Dashra. After scattered fighting on the borders and steppes, both forces meet to parlay, but neither side surrenders.

The two armies clash in a bloody battle. Suddenly, a great and powerful force was activated from somewhere in Tuluk, matched by a similar force in the Muark lands. Great beams of light spring into the air from each location. As the lights began to surge towards each other, the shadow of a dragon was sighted in the sky, swooping over Allanak, Luir's, towards Tuluk, and around the rest of the Known World before disappearing. After the beams of light connected, the land around Tyn Dashra was torn apart, great earthquakes rumbling outwards.

The volcano near Allanak is no more, with a great swath of scoria plains left in its wake. Tyn Dashra is destroyed--a volcano has erupted from within the rocky steppes. In Tuluk, Isar's Tree appears to be desiccated. Both armies flee the fiery carnage, and a group of the Muark are seen making their way to the gates at Luir's Outpost. Rumors abound that the North Road is no longer passable.

While both armies return to each of their respective city-states claiming victory, the days of sometimes uneasy peace between Allanak and Tuluk are at an end.

May 2014 - Removal of Qynar and Governorships from Nobles.  Uaptal removed from Nobility.
The Triumvirate has met and the results have spread through
the city like a tregil with its tail on fire.

Coming at the top of announcements are that the Triumvirate
has rescinded the Intra-Territorial Restructuring Act (with all noble houses
opposed, of course).  This means that all governorship powers of the
nobility are removed, which has many of the city's highborn in a huff.

On the heels of this news come some other matters voted on and
decided by the Triumvirate. House Winrothol has been said to be
the new House in charge of the former assets of House Uaptal
relating to the breed and sale of beasts of burden.  Similarly, House
Tenneshi has been placed over the former assets of House Uaptal
relating to the governance of the Ivory's natural resources.  Finally,
House Kassigarh has been granted writs to seize Uaptal assets
relating to something to do with extensive loans, though most
rumormongers go glassy-eyed trying to explain it.

One particular surprise emerging from the meeting is that House
Kassigarh has risen to the position of the premier House in Tuluk,
followed by Winrothol, Tenneshi, Dasari, and Lyksae.

1641 (Year 24 Age 22)    Spring 2015 ?
Unaffiliated southern refugees are rounded up from various slums in Tuluk by the Legions. Several weeks after the first disappearances, a force led by High Templar Jurinia Winrothol takes a force of listless figures masked by burlap sacks to the northern gates of Ten'Sarak, along with regular soldiers of His Legions, including the Sun's Furies, and various Faithful. After a short siege, the Tuluki forces break through the northern gate and systematically slaughter the remaining southern troops in the encampment before setting it ablaze. Tuluk abandons the razed camp and claims victory over Allanak.

High Templar Jurinia's shambling force grows as citizens and non-citizens alike begin to disappear from the streets of Tuluk. Riots begin to take place, and templars for and against High Templar Jurinia square off in the Red Sun Commons. The encounter ends with High Templar Poma Uaptal knocking High Templar Jurinia unconscious and calling for the gates of Tuluk to be closed. Denizens of Tuluk flee as fighting emerges between the two factions within the Unified Order.

Winter 2019
Spikes, pillars and other ruk-manifestations jostled, flung and skewered people across the known. In the wilderness, new points of interest were added - ridges, fields of strange spires, etc.
And other, uh, plot stuff.   Salt Ravine opened up

This part needs an edit because of the changes to romance below:

QuoteCitizens of Tuluk all belong to one of four castes. Tuluki caste hierarchy is rigid in some ways while relaxed in others. Generally, friendship or at least acquaintance can exist across all caste lines, but sexual relationship cannot (the use of pleasure slaves does not constitute a relationship). And, although one might have a friend of another caste, neither one would ever forget the difference in their respective status.

QuoteRomance?
Due to advanced loss of life from various means, the known laws and customs of Tuluk regarding relations among the castes have changed. It is no longer completely unthinkable to have romantic or sexual relations with a commoner. Faithful Lords and Ladies may now have sexual relations among themselves, Chosen, and or trusted commoner, such as an Aide or ranked member of the Legions. It would and will still be seen as abhorrent to sleep with a common of zero worth or status. The same shall apply to Chosen Lords and Ladies. No children shall be produced by a Faithful or Chosen, unless via another Faithful or Chosen. Listless relations are abhorrent and shall result in dire consequences to the Faithful or Chosen in question.

Both are from: https://www.armageddon.org/help/view/Tuluki%20Roleplay

First is the first paragraph under Castes.  Second quote is the second to last paragraph under Nobles and Commoners where it's subtitled 'Romance?'

Can we get a brief mention of what Listless are?
I get or am getting they are bagheads and like robots or something, but they are mentioned by name several times but I don't see anywhere, brief or otherwise, 'Listless are mindless blah blah blahs who blah blah blah, you'd know to ignore them because asking questions in Tuluk gets you shitcanned'

Also glad to see I can plow nobility in the north now.

Having just rejoined the game after years, I remember when (as many of you do, I suspect), Tuluk was closed and reopened again. Is there any OOC talk about what the meta is on all this - what problems were trying to be solved? I dearly loved original Tuluk, but never played there after the changes.

I mean...A lot and nothing at all.

I'm looking forward to seeing Staff's take on what was wrong, what's been trimmed, and what's been added.

I think it would be a separate thread to discuss 'What Was Wrong and Right about Tuluk previously', and this seems more focused on discussing the new help files getting dropped.

I got a couple questions:

When was "the fall of Tuluk" in real life, approximately?

[SNIP]

What is the 'Battle of Tyn Dashra' ?

The 'Fall of Tuluk' would be this event from the history page

Quote
1450 (Year 64 Age 19)

A terrifying and presumably magickal cataclysm strikes the city-state of Tuluk, leaving it to be nothing more than a pile of rubble and ruins. Over seventy thousand people are killed that day in what has since come to be known as the Fall of Tuluk. During the chaos, Precentor Kul manages to overthrow Precentor Isar and gains control over what little remains.

So sometime in the 1990s.

Oh. So the recent one, the second fall? Or is another thing?

There's a time convertor on the Contributions board that would help nail down times too, but just remember that time wasn't always as solid as it is now. Saturday downtime in the late 90s/ early 00s could send IC weeks into oblivion. So while it would tell you exactly when based on how time is coded now, it wouldn't be accurate based on how time used to be coded

In the current helpfiles it mentions various events that occurred that shaped the city itself, along with the culture of Tuluk.

"The Coming of the Dragon" also destroyed one quarter of Tuluk.
"The Fall of Tuluk" changed the culture to HATE magickers, as magickers destroyed their city.
"The Occupation of Tuluk" and "The Rebellion and Retaking of Tuluk" changed the culture and removed the Noble House of Reynolte.  It also rebuilt the city to be gigantic.  It opened up the "new noble houses of Tuluk" and introduced the 'don't mudsex nobles please'.
"The Copper War" had Tuluk and Allanak fight.   Ten'Sarak was involved.
"The Flooding of Tuluk" had the city reshaped again, halflings removed, and introduced Shadow Artists.
"The Battle of Tyn Dashra" had the Tan Muark lands destroyed by a volcano (which is SOUTHWEST of TULUK), Ten'Sarak and the fortress at Ayun Iskandir was involved again.
"The Razing of Ten'Sarak and the Closing of the Gates" had Tuluk lead an army of listless to Ten'Sarak and burn it, while they shut the gates.

There are four distinct subdivisions of the City of Tuluk, still fully standing and functional:
Red Sun Commons,
The Warrens,
The Noble Quarter and
the Heart.

Freil's Rest, which used to be also known as the Merchant's District,
the Tribal Market,
Poets' Circle and
the Old Quarter, are destroyed by catastrophic earthquake damage and are largely off limits to the population at large.

When was the Merchant's District Destroyed?   This includes all Greater Merchant House Estates, yes?
The Great Merchant Houses which once held large emporiums in the Northlands are no longer. Their holdings and most of their people were wiped out during the destruction of the earthquakes. Instead, the vast majority of day to day trade that takes place in the Red Sun Commons and the Warrens has largely been left in the care of new upstart groups and bands of hunters.

When was the Poet's Circle, Old Quarter, and Tribal Market closed/Destroyed?

They were all destroyed at the same time, when the series of massive earthquakes also shook the entire rest of the Known. It's not in the Chronology, but did happen as part of a different plot, roughly around when shadow and nilazi subclasses were introduced.

As best as I can determine

The Cataclysm (Bah, Fall of Tuluk, Bah!) happened in 1998.
Occupation of Tuluk was around end of 2000
Aquila, Sathis and Ihsahn all died April 6, 2002

Each Staff member is going to have their own motivations and reasoning for the re-opening of Tuluk.  It has always had advocates among Staff.

My personal tipping point came when I realized:

  • It has been long enough since it closed that we have a large number of our players which never played there.  They can read the docs but don't know the culture beyond that.  With very few characters played in Morins and them often tending to be Tribals rather than Tulukis, they had no where to learn.
  • Luirs was, slowly and over time, becoming a center of player population.  And was re-designed in a way that led to higher load on Staff to support (Council / Garrison) than it had been originally when Tuluk shut down.  Luirs or Tuluk?  Might as well have Tuluk back and revert Luirs.

Pppppppplease can you add that to the Chronology?

I'm very excited to be able to play in Tuluk again.  My first real characters were in Tuluk and I've really missed it.  I love Allanak, too, but the different cities have such different cultural feelings.

I think this is the main way that text-based games excel over video games.  It would be really hard for a video game to change up maps and adapt this way.

So, the questions are now:
Where did the remaining bards relocate to?   Is there a new theatre or is that a plot for the new nobles to figure out?   Where do the bardic circles go?
Where did the merchants and shops relocate to?  Is Kadius/Kurac/Salarr/Nenyuk now trying to find their own space, new space, after the gates open up?
Where did the tribal market sellers relocate to?  Did they all move to the Red Sun Commons, or did they just shut down once trade wasn't made inside and outside the city?

Sorta excited to visit Tuluk again in general.

It's been forever since I've been in the sun kings sanctuary.

It's also sorta funny that new characters are starting INSIDE Tuluk but the gates are closed.

It's like the walking dead, just open empty streets, "Hello!" Echo echo echo.

If you guys get bored, come to the Scaien Gates and we can shout to one another from opposite sides lol.

Not really - they've only know that their entire life, in all likelyhood. In fact, for most born inside the walls, going to the grasslands is a whole new world. Old dwarves and elves might remember it, and very old humans. But you don't know all of those prime hunting spots and whatnot unless you were born in Morin's. You've never seen a kryl. Or a gortok, and probably not even a real live tregil.

Ohh yeah, I'm not talking shit just found it humorous.

I've played in Tuluk before and I am gonna be wandering around like a tourist!

Also I'm hoping against hope that people aren't gonna to flood the shops with goods from day one.

I used to hate that during resets when everyone would rush the shops to make their weekly coins

Most Tuluki PCs starting in Tuluk who supposedly have never left the city will still find their way to Luir's in 5 minutes and be master of the Grasslands hunt in 10 minutes.

There are also a bunch of players that died during the RPT, made PCs in Morins afterwards, and now seem to be waiting around.

Prediction, many characters wasting their starting coin partying in Tuluk to end up role playing starving beggars in the streets.
