How to spice

I swear this has been asked, but I couldn't find this in the help files on 'spice', 'smoke', 'shave', 'make', and 'sniff'.

1. Can you craft or somehow make the grains of spice X into the pinch of spice X? 

From what I can tell, if you

You get a tube that can go for three or four hits.  Whereas:

You get a tube that only has one hit.

2. Is it too 'find out IC' to ask for the various measurements of spice?  For instance, there are grains which are apparently smaller than pinches, and one of the help files (shave) mentions a knot, which I assume is even bigger.  Are there other units?

The process of harvesting and consolidating spice into larger units is a closely guarded secret by the merchant house that deals in that sort of thing.  Worth finding out by playing in that clan sometime!
