I love the way they mastered out contact on new characters.

But I'm curious why they didn't do barrier too?

Seems like it's impossible to have privacy if everyone can just bust down your mental defenses.

I hate to liken arm to a rat pellet experiment but

I think leaving room for some skills to improve will allow players to feel a little bit of reinforcement you get from bumping a skill.

I think Barrier should start off as novice. Not everyone is going to be taught growing up that you should be able to block off your mind to others. Some might and you might be able to ask for special circumstances in that case and do a spec app for that. Probably best to ask in the helper chat about this. I'm sure there are other reasons that are probably too IC for anyone to talk about here.

They did give starting characters a boost to barrier.  I don't think it needs to start at master.  Reasons include that I just think it's more realistic that vNPCs (like your character was), and coded reasons that I won't get into.

As per the helpfiles on the subguilds which have been clarified to show all the skills they give, the answer is no. No sub-guilds or main-guilds get boosts to barrier. Why this would be a thing we can't tell people I have no idea. If a guild/subguild DID get it and someone mentioned it to staff, they would probably add it to the help-files for the guild like they did for a bunch of other skills we pointed out weren't in them a couple years ago. Like Scavengers being able to forage food. Or Hunters getting wilderness sneak. Those weren't always in there.

I seem to have noticed that the Indy people running around in game lately have all the best shit.

Though I don't hobnob with the higher eschelons very much.
