Rewards for bringing players into the game

Started by Saellyn, October 06, 2014, 06:38:56 PM

What do you guys think? Folks bring people into the game, maybe they get a cool message when they log into the game thanking them? Maybe a neat GDB title?

Thoughts!

You know, we do have the Publicity group that this can go in...

I'm in favor of:

- Neat GDB titles
- A leaderboard

Generally anything that gives awareness towards people who've contributed to the game by bringing in new players.

I'm also in favor of more tangible rewards (some consideration on special applications/sponsored roles), but that seems to be a touchy subject for people, and going with the less controversial options is the low hanging fruit anyway.

Tangible rewards would leave people who don't bring people to the MUD behind when it's already rough enough getting a sponsored role.

I don't see any publicity forum folder.

Give them a mention in the weekly update.

And give their characters super powers.

I'm sort of in favor of this, in the form of slight preferential treatment for special applications.  I'm talking about acting as a tie-breaker, or for when some special apps are close calls.  For instance, if our beloved new friend Piotrhabera wants to play a mutant which had some slight coded advantage, and under normal circumstances is something staff tend to deny, why not let him try it once if he happened to be a star recruiter for the game and otherwise exhibited reasonably good play?

Recruiting people is hard.  I've played for ten years, and haven't managed to get anyone I know to play.  If there's someone out there whose the pied piper of RPI MUDs, I have absolutely no problem giving them a little something extra for taking the effort to bring more people on board to betray, murder and corrupt.

It would be reward enough to get that confused phone call from one of my friends who i lured into trying out the game.

Friend:Dude, im tryina' play that game...theres a bunch of words on my screen now, how do I get past this shit to the game?

Me: That is the game -end call- -silence phone-  -laugh-

1000 'sids per head.

1500 'sids if it's a hot chick like
"When I was a fighting man, the kettle-drums they beat;
The people scattered gold-dust before my horse's feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back."

Bringing new players to the game is its own reward. Getting your friends to play has nothing to do with the staff trusting you to play a role properly. Go hog wild with titles and thank you messages and special treats on githmas.

oh and here's a free videogame.

Yeah, that's unfair to people like lordcooper and I who don't have any friends.

If I'm going to lower myself to start talking to other human beings, I need to be plenty rewarded for it.

lol introducing arm, f2p soon to be p2w! Yeaaaaaaah.. No, mechanics like these will be exploited.

Just bring people to the game for their and your amusement. If that isn't reward enough, then fuck this game isn't good enough. (Which it is?)
Modern concepts of fair trials and justice are simply nonexistent in Zalanthas. If you are accused, you are guilty until someone important decides you might be useful. It doesn't really matter if you did it or not.

Bring people to the game, and then help them understand the game for that sweet sweet helping new players/leadership karma. I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER.

This gave me a wacky idea. Flip it around.

Probationary karma for newbies: Starts at 3 karma for first character only. Maybe review them after they die and decide if they should keep 1 or 2 of those karma.

Uh no? I'd rather not be splatted by newbie #15 who decided half-giants looked sick as fuck.

Man if I could have been a half giant you all would have had a blast because i was brand fucking new to MUDding properly and I would have been SUPER easy to fool.

No. No rewards. We all want more players online at any given time. Getting those players online is reward enough.

There are many side effects of implementing something like this.  Most of them are very bad ones.  Being able to spell and read (even being able to read documentation and come up with a convincing application) does not prove one's ability to be trusted with playing that application.

I personally would be interested in the prospect of player contests on the GDB that would net custom GDB titles for the winner.  That contest we held ages ago for artwork got a sweet title given out!

With appropriate roleplay of course.

I would rather have a non-public thanks than something public.

Maybe after logging in, you can have stats of the people you brought in.

>recruitment stats
Players you recruited to the game: 12
Last time one logged in: July 12th, 2013
Players recruitment tree (Players that your new players brought in): 2

+1 but you need some way to say that it was you who recruited those players.

This part was -mostly- a joke, but if my character can get laser-beam eyes, I'm going to be recruiting a few new players.

If voting is a way of bringing people into the game, then rewarding those who get new players in would somehow have to include this method. That would reward people who vote a lot. That seems to have a lot of ramifications which might not be good.

I imagine a small thing on the GDB avatar/handle would be alright, at the very most, but giving any kind of IC advantage to players would be wrong, and people would end up recruiting for the wrong reasons.

Also what about other players who prefer anonymity but who still add to the game in many ways?  Also what about the players that make ARM so much fun that new players decide to stick around?  Retention is at least as important as recruiting.

The best options for increasing the player base, outside of outright publicity, are voting, playing well and showing your appreciation for other players who do these things.
At your table, the XXXXXXXX templar says in sirihish, echoing:
"Everyone is SAFE in His Walls."

So you could bring in new players... but you choose not to.

Dear Armageddon Mud Storytellers! I have 10 players in my presence willing to play at my sayso. I will release them to you at a location of my specification and a time of my choosing. There you will exchange to me the rare and fabled 9th karma(full sorcerer). You have exactly one hour to reply before I start directing them to Aardwarf one at a time. And storytellers? No funny business. I get the faintest wiff of Administration and they'll all be lost to you.
