Saved order of items

Okay this is starting to get beyond frustrating.

Say you have a skinning knife and a throwing knife in a sheath... You want to be able to draw the skinning knife as the first option.. So you arrange things so it happens like that. Then you quit and log back in and the throwing knife is the first thing you draw. So now you have to rearrange everything all over again.

Or say you have a room with some chests or bags or what have you and you have it set up so the first bag has bone in it the second bag has stones in it. Game crashes or maintenance is done that requires a reboot now the first bag has stones in it and the second bag has bones.

This is getting quite frustrating and I'm sure it could be fixed pretty quickly and easily.

As you log in and out or as the game reboots things are going to reverse order.  Your best bet is to use items that have unique keywords or learn to adapt with the change each time.

Or you could, you know, not put more knives than the sheath is described to physically be able to hold into the sheath...

Or use the non-common keywords and/or an alias as the vegetable suggested.

All I'm saying is this is something that can be fixed... Items can be saved in the particular item you leave in.

Evil Cabbage: There's only 10 aliases allowed and I'm filled with them and its annoying to have to find new things to fix stuff that can easily be fixed on the coding side of things.

Really, just "draw sheath <keyword>" more than "knife". Learn to say "draw sheath skinning" instead of just "draw sheath knife"

In apartments when you have things you have to spend more to get stuff that has keywords that you can differentiate with or you're just going to have to go through everything every time you log in incase the game was down at all.. Its extremely frustrating and annoying and could EASILY be fixed.

Coding new shit isn't as easy as you think it is.

I've been a programmer before I know what coding is and how easy or difficult things might be. This is just a relatively easy thing to store items under your name or in your apartment in the order you last had them in a database. That database order doesn't change until the PC tells it to. Its not that difficult.

You're asking for them to do something that is inherent to DIKU and many other codes. It's just how DIKU works. It's not just a matter of adding a code snippet. It's part of the backbone of the game engine's saving mechanism. Be glad the game saves equipment on exit - some don't.

I guess it can be frustrating...but it's just sort of how it is, I don't think it's really a huge deal.  Like someone else said, use a better keyword to target your items?

Also, if you have three chests in a room, full of stuff and you're really bent out of shape with the order being changed, trying to craft something will move it to the top of the 'room list'.

Example:
1.chest - hides
2.chest - bones
3.chest - stones

If you try crafting 3.chest, you won't be able to make anything but it'll move to the top of your list of chests, becoming 1.chest.

So far, you're the only one who thinks it's important enough to do anything about, and you haven't offered up any ideas on -how- to fix it. Some of us have offered ideas on how -you- can fix it, but honestly - I don't know of anyone who has had trouble with it beyond the first day or so. And during the first day or so, if the type of knife you pull from your sheath is such a big deal that you feel the game should do something about it, I'd hate to imagine what the rest of your game-day is going to be like.

There's really no need to get upset about your sheathing issue. The fix is simple: stop trying to get knife. Get skinning instead. These things have keywords for reasons - so you can distinguish them from other things. There's also the "key" command, so you can see the list of things you have, in the order they're in, by number. That is how the coders have chosen to handle lists in this game. That's more than some  games have - some games don't even save equipment on exit, so when you quit out, and come back to the game, you have no inventory at all. And some games don't have save-rooms.

That clan with the different types of lockers - they did that - to fix the problem. It works great, no one has to worry about which number locker they have, because the numeric order doesn't matter. What matters is that their locker is the only pink one in the room. It could be the 4th locker. It could be the 27th locker. Some half-giant could've come by and picked up all the lockers and shuffled them like a deck of cards and tossed them back in a circle, so that there was no first or last locker - and your locker will still be pink.

I'm not thrilled about coming down on your idea more, smt, but even in clans where they don't have cool rainbow spectrum footlockers, it's not that hard to find yours. It's always going to be one of two numbers. If there are 17 lockers and today yours is #3, if there is a reload tomorrow, you will be #15. Your position in line never changes (unless someone picks up a locker), just the direction the line goes. (Eg you went from third to third from last)

So, if you know what number you are, you look in that one. If that isn't it, you know which one it is. It's not really that taxing.

I think everyone has been mildly annoyed by this once or twice, but it's such a minor issue (for almost everyone) that people would rather see other things change instead. Sucks that it upsets you, but you're in the minority here. Most people took that for a feature years ago, and moved on.

Anyway - just alias draw <weapon> and use that.  Too limited with 10 aliases?  Use a client.  They are awesome.

It's not that much of a hardship that I have to alias it at all. And if it was, I wouldn't rely on the game alias system to make it. I'd do that client-side, where I can have hundreds of aliases if I want.
