New Guy - Hi

Started by Finely_Tailored, August 13, 2013, 09:17:27 PM

Hi,

I'm new.  I suppose that I've a question to start.  There's a certainty my character will die.  I've played RPIs before and first attempts seldom go well.  That said - as a player base, how friendly is the game to new players?

Ha...haha...Thanks for the boots!

Seriously though, you'll find a great deal of support from the community outside of the game, and probably a little IG if you're lucky...but it's pretty harsh in there man. Pretty harsh. :p

Very friendly. Players can generally tell when there's a newbie and will be accommodating when it comes to not knowing certain things, though the game's harshness serves as a teacher as well. Outside of the game we have the New Player Questions forum on the GDB here, as well as the Helpers, who you can chat live with by clicking the appropriate button on the main site. Usually at least one of us is around to answer questions.

Have fun!

I know you asked about the player-base, but since Cutthroat already answered that(players are usually very accommodating of newbies and will go to length to help them when they realize it) I'm going to address this question generally instead.

It depends on what you're looking for in the game.

Want to escape into another life and be immersed into a brutal setting? Make friends with spice-fiends, enemies with the local group of mercs? Get in a drunken bar brawl with a half-elf and lose a few teeth?  Then the game can do that for you very well and it's easy.

Want to be the most badass explorer/warrior/assassin/merchant in the known? You'll probably get your teeth kicked in quite a few times.

Play your character like he's a living, breathing person who's aware of the dangers that the harsh environment that Zalanthas provides, and you'll do great.

Also, joining a clan is highly suggested, if not, find an in-game mentor of some sort.

The -game- is very UNfriendly to new players. The learning curve is steep, the world really is as harsh as people are making it out to be.

The -players- are not unfriendly. There's a "helper" crew who can give you assistance out of the game, via a special helper chat. They're all players who've volunteered to do that and have proven they can be trusted to give you help, without ruining any IC surprises or opportunties to discover.

You might get the occasional assistance in the game, if someone uses the OOC command when you're in the same room and need a brief hand. But the OOC command is used sparingly; you wouldn't expect to see any lengthy conversations with it.

Most other help from players comes in the form of IC prompting, guiding, explaining, etc.

I appreciate the replies.

I'm glad to hear the emphasis on roleplaying a character.  People/Creatures are only as exciting as their relationships to other players and how they live within the ties that bind us all.  It is my hope the game's environment is not so steep as to frustrate.  I'm sure I'll find out.

Either way - thank you for the warm welcome and honest assessment of what the game offers.

Just don't give up. It'll click in time (and then you can check out but you can never leave)...and it's worth it! And don't be afraid to ask questions!

It was only frustrating when I was new, on certain aspects. But as a whole, it was challenging in a refreshing way, rather than a frustrating way. My #1 advice to you is to *absorb* what you read, and read plenty. Mansa's guide is a really awesome place to start and will give you a solid overview of game play.

I say join a clan, and don't leave the city without someone else to help you. We players love you already - you're here. Our characters like you too - we need your boots.

Welcome to Armageddon.

Welcome to Armageddon. If you need help, it's a click away.
Varak:You tell the mangy, pointy-eared gortok, in sirihish: "What, girl? You say the sorceror-king has fallen down the well?"
Ghardoan:A pitiful voice rises from the well below, "I've fallen and I can't get up..."

If you're having trouble getting help or interaction IG, just go to the busiest bar in your chosen city and hang around. It will come.

And use helper chat! But don't stress if they can't answer all your questions, as some things are really best to find out in game.

Please play a character and dont care about what you want as a player.

If you have gripes about the game, this probably isn't the place for them.

@ new guy
Try to use common sense and don't get discouraged if you end up dead. Look back at the situation and decide what you could/should have done differently and keep that in mind on your next character.
All the world will be your enemy. When they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.

In my, albeit limited, RPI experience - the better the game the lower your chances of survival are with an initial character.  Worlds that create tension, drama, and immersion tend to be filled with dangers of all kinds.  And, as a new player, not understanding the true mechanics of a world puts you at the kind of disadvantage that will most likely end up in death.  The only exceptions to that, again in my limited experience, have been characters that do not truly attempt to explore or experience what the world and playerbase have to offer.

I really appreciate the replies.

I like this one. :D

Seriously, welcome to our sandbox - the players are friendly, the characters are probably not. Enjoy the stories!

Oh, no.  No, no.

I'm just a newbie.  Green as grass.  There is nothing interesting here.  Overlook me, please.  I am not the one you want to target in this battle.  Also, you're really pretty, but I will not be following you into that house alone until at least the third tavern date.  And you have to pay for all three because I spent all my newcomer coin accidentally when I purchased three shirts all of the same color - I was really trying for the green one.  I hope you like red.

Dibs on 1 red shirt, anyone wanting one I sell cheep and you can barely see blood stains.
Two dwarves get into a small fist-fray over who owns a pile of dung at the roadside.

You think:
     "Get your shit together"

So, to the question you asked:  Everyone you meet who isn't a part of your race/clan is not friendly.  In fact, they are probably plotting to use, abuse, or kill you depending on what you've been up to.

It is highly recommended that you join a clan as a new player:  its a way for PCs to actually have a vested interest in your pc's success.  They'll likely teach you a lot of basics.  And you can use clan training or crafting to help practice emoting.  And, Clans tend to have plot that you can hop right into to get yourself into the swing of the world.

Or, you could do what I did and rough it without a clan.  Your pc will die, and you'll learn a lot the hard way.  Having done both, I seriously recommend doing it the clan way a few times first.

Was there no safety? No learning by heart of the ways of the world? No guide, no shelter, but all was miracle and leaping from the pinnacle of a tower into the air?

Modern concepts of fair trials and justice are simply nonexistent in Zalanthas. If you are accused, you are guilty until someone important decides you might be useful. It doesn't really matter if you did it or not.
