Is Wagonmaking Fully Implemented?

Started by Maker, September 10, 2012, 05:09:33 PM

Is it?  Help file says it is not, but who knows when that was updated last?  Could have been this morning, could have been 5 years ago.

It's not. Won't be for a while, either. You're better off training another skill, you are.

Fair enough, but then why even include it in the skill set?  If it isn't implemented and isn't gonna be implemented anytime in the near future, why wouldn't they just disable it outright?

You cannot make a full wagon with the wagonmaking skill. Per the helpfile, you can make parts of wagons.

Skill Wagon Making                                                    (Skill)

This much prized skill allows the crafter to construct simple wagons
from the appropriate raw materials.  This is a laborious process, usually
requiring constructing the pieces from which the wagon will be assembled.

Please note: this skill is not fully implemented yet.

Syntax:
craft (item1) (item2) into (desired result)

Example:
  > craft coil 2.coil 3.coil 4.coil into leather harness

> craft block into rounded wheel hub

> craft short into sturdy wheel spoke

> craft hub spoke 2.spoke 3.spoke 4.spoke into spoked wheel hub

> craft spoke 2.spoke plank spoked into sturdy wagon wheel

Delay:
  after

I think the frustration doesn't lie in the fact that you can't make anything from the skill. It's that it's a skill to make wagons and you can make wagon parts but not make the parts into wagons, which is extremely counterintuitive and makes no sense to anyone until they're told that no, they will in fact never have a wagon, even if they're the most talented at 'wagonmaking' a person can be. Even if they only wanted to build a handcart.

Wagon-design is an artform with technology and skill not readily available to the common-man, or noble either. There are organizations in Zalanthas that have the powah(!). They have the skills, tools, material and experience. It takes more then knowing how to shape a wheel and axel.

Which implies that having the skills to make the parts is then valued to those few and select entities that can indeed make wagons. If you are a pc and want to make a wagon, you should consider where you need to position yourself to be able to achieve that.

All in all its not a wasted skill, its just that the tools you need are not all held in the individuals hands and needs more hands to achieve that just the two attached to a normal persons body.

This has been so hashed out in other threads, I wonder if this is going to turn into another rage thread about the already discussed issue?
The funny little foreign man

I often hear the jingle to -Riunite on ice- when I read the estate name Reynolte, eve though there ain't no ice in Zalanthas.

I'm not upset about it. I'm too busy worrying about upsetting RL things. I was merely supplying an opinion.

I just hope it's the last skill in the tree.

I bet it branches something super amazing though. That requires to to construct 1000 useless wagon wheels in order to branch.

The main purpose I've seen the craft used for in the past is for wagon repair during special events. Occasionally, staff go all Oregon Trail on a wagon party and make the wheel or axle break. Hopefully you travel with spares, or else you might have to trade an inix for spare parts.

Meh, take it out of the merchant skill tree and make it a skill that has to be learned in game.

That would stop people from complaining about it all the time. If a House needs a master wagonmaker (to join their team of vNPC's), then hire a master woodcrafter/lumberjack/bonecrafter etc, and have the 'vnpcs' teach them the skill, let them get it up to master in house....then go from there.

Then people would complain about having to join a house to learn wagonmaking. :P

I can think of another skill that is already like this in game, and I think of it more like a cool bonus than sucky that I have to be in "XXX" to get "YYY" with a "ZZZ."

You know what would stop people from complaining all of the time?

Nothing.  Nothing ever will.

Quote from: Nyr on June 03, 2010, 06:32:38 PMWith the codebase the way it currently is, there is no way to please every single person.  Even if it were changed, people would still be pissed off.  I swear--if we had a magick-only Arm MUD clone and added a spell that did nothing but make people fart rainbows, we'd have half of the GDB playerbase clamoring for its removal on the basis that it was too whimsical and nutty, a quarter claiming that it had a detrimental effect on the game's economy, an eighth pointing out how some people do nothing but spamcast this spell up to mon so that they could abuse it, and the remaining minority taking issue with the fact that we used a Zalanthan word to substitute for "indigo."

It has been written and shot down already, with explanation.  Let this thread be locked!
