Discussion of Rule #8 - No Botting

Started by Marauder Moe, March 16, 2012, 03:26:51 PM

What constitutes as 'botting'? Someone setting a forage script so they have time to emote while not destroying their chances at picking enough cotton to get out of the fields?

Such as; can someone have a script that auto-forages for the specific purpose to RP more without having to spam FORAGE COTTON over and over again? In such a way that you can actually get in an emote before the sun sets?

Someone made an Armageddon bot???

Lol, I can't believe someone actually was stupid enough to do this. Like our staff wouldn't catch them.

It says to completely automate your characters actions. So that might be okay but you should probably send in a request.

The people that abuse the game like this are not doing it to set aside time and energy for roleplay (whether before, after, or during scripted stuff).  Were that the case, more energy and time would be spent on actual roleplaying.

With appropriate roleplay of course.

Very specifically, a script where you forage cotton and put the cotton in a bag and then you walk away from the terminal is BAD.

A script where you forage cotton and put the cotton in a bag so you can carry on a conversation or emote, is OK.

Ah, thank you for the clarification.

I'm hazarding a bet that if you're doing this in a manner the staff deem unfit for the game, they'd have emailed you telling you off already.
Rickey's Law: People don't want "A story". They want their story.

Reminds me of the old skillbot scripts in Dragonrealms..stopping into the thieves guild and five guys going through
the motions of X-actions.

Don't see what use it has in Arm other than foraging.. and maybe making arrows.

Anonymous:  I mean... the concept of making one class completely dominating, and able to crush any other class after 5 days of power-playing, seems ridiculous to me.

Autowalk scripts to flee from combat to safe locations. I've run into them in other games, and I've had a few experiences with other PCs that lead me to believe some people use them here.
All the world will be your enemy. When they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.

You've obviously not picked enough cotton, friend.

I've seen crafters doing this.  I seem to remember even firing one once because of it.
The character would sit there and craft something every three or four mins, but if you walked in and trued talking to them, it could take a good ten mins (and two or three finished shirts) to get a reply.

There use to a a crafter that would sit in the Sanctuary, doing this with stone? IIRC. So silly.

I also followed a hunter around with a whiran  for a LOOONG time who seemed to be botting, talking to and emoting at him, this dude had some skill.. makes you wonder how awesome it would be if these people put as much effort into playing as they do scripting.

Needless to say, I am thankful for rule #8.

Grebber - One who grebs.

I've never seen this. Crikey, I'm paranoid about manually doing a task more than twice without throwing in substantial emoting - which is always unique. Sometimes I wish I didn't feel like I had to go that far though...sometimes I would just like to be able to craft 20 shirts, throw in a crappy emote here and there and be done with it...because frankly early stages of most crafting skills...and then stuff like forage that sometimes you just -need- to do to keep your character alive is so boring. I just want to get it over with so I can get elsewhere to find some RP.

So not down with bots though! I expend so much energy personally on doing all the monotonous stuff by hand and being there, at the computer, that I personally want to kick the arses of the people taking short cuts.

Staff should just load up a mantis/gith/mek near people doing that in the wilds...that would soon teach them to walk off.

every mud I played in had that rule already in it. I just assumed Arm does too. Surprised to find out that it didnt.

I do that for salt and stuff.
Just so much easier to emote and converse with people while doing that.
Then typing forage X every two seconds.
"Don't take life too seriously, nobody ever makes it out alive anyway."

I've had a trigger thing you could turn on for foraging 1/20 seconds, and have used it a bit. I worry that it refers to me here though, but not for any intentional thing. 90% of the time or more I'm at my computer when it's going on and such, but then with the situation with my father (and my living in a hotel room where I can't just easily pick up my computer in 2 seconds to leave with it), sometimes I wind up being told to go into the bathroom so he can piss and he takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes with his stuff going on, but you never know ahead of time, and with the paralysis, he has almost no notice, so hesitating long enough to shut things down can mean a bunch of pee covered sheets and more. If you're lucky enough for it not to be #2 instead. I haven't been emailed about it, so I assume it's not me, but there goes using that anymore, because I wouldn't want there to be any misunderstandings, on my part 'or' anyone elses. >>

No one on staff is just waiting for the opportunity to get revenge on someone who killed one of their characters years ago.

Except me. I remember every death. And I am coming for you bastards.

I've use forage triggers for a while now. I think minimal required typing in a text-base game is very important. The less that players -need- to type, the better. This allows us more area to type creative emotes. If staff finds my laziness to be harmful, they can go ahead and ban my account. At this point in time, I couldn't really care less.

So, what you're saying, Nyr, is that its not for those random people who script out foraging, or something menial, as much as it is people who do that, and then go take a shower. Or turn on a script, and go cook dinner.

Or is it anyone that might LOOK like they are scripting, but just hits up arrow, reforage, and no emotes?

As long as you're paying attention, reacting to the game, and remaining realistic as to your character's limits and behavhiors, I don't think it matters too much how often you think/emote, beyond interestingness. Botting is way different from doing dull tasks and getting tired of coming up with a different way to emote the same thing for the 200th time.

You all worry too much. :P

anyone who knows anything about triggers and such know that immortals can set off your triggers with echos, if you are just redoing a command over and over manually they wont beable to force you to do it. If you do the task automatically with triggers and you arent at the computer when they try to talk to you or mess with you then you will get bitch slapped. Not a very hard concept.
