new skill: feign death

Started by Lenny Poppo, September 17, 2009, 04:05:21 PM

hey

Been a while since I lasted played but I got some ideas running in my head all day on the bus:

how about feign death? many games today allow you to pretend to die but not really, it's just a ruse to trick the enemy

my idea:

feign death skill for sneaky types (maybe some warrior types)

If you succeed: "You successfully trick your foe, all goes black."

Then you are sleeping, but still "aware" of your surroundings.

If you fail: "You can't shake them off, you fall to the floor!"

Then you are lagged and can be hit, also you would have to stand.

if you critical fail: "You stumble to the floor and hit your head, all goes black." (rare)

You are now unconscious and can be killed easily, but that is the risk of feigning death.

I love this idea.

Actually this is already coded in:

>sleep
You go to sleep.

>em is not breathing.
I seduced the daughters of men
And made the death of them.
I demanded human sacrifices
From the rest of them.
I became the spirit that haunted
And protected them.
And I lived in the tower of flame
But death collected them.
-War is my Destiny, Ill Bill

Shal, you forgot:

> hemote Actually, @ really is breathing.

Also, can you go to sleep during combat? If not, someone should code that, stat.

You should be able to still behead feigning-death characters, causing them to be really dead.  Your risk.

What would "assess" return to a feigning death character?

I wouldn't mind being able to OOCly know that the person was not dead.  IE: Different assesses and whatnot.

Oh- you should be fully able to strip a feigning death character- so all eq would have to be removed and placed in the body, and then worn again when you stop feigning.. Oh boy...This is turning into a code-nightmare.

Yeah.

By uttering a specific phrase (sort of like an incantation) you can get characters around
yours to go into blind rages causing them to become confused and, sometimes, defenseless.

If the skill backfires all characters near to yours go into a rage with bonuses to combat skills
and attack your character.

Only if we can practice it at nil.

Sorry, you're a newb even though you spampractice the skill.

As many of you can guess, the chances of 'feign death' being implemented are somewhere between null and 0, as long as you divide by nil, and multiply the result by nothing.

I don't like it personally, but the only way it would work is if you were to fall after taking hit. If you just go 'ArrGgH!' after you parry a blow and fall, no way any normal person is gonna go 'Yay!' and walk away. I'ma poke your dead body a few times for good measure and steal your shit. So unless it was coded to wait until you take a hit, or make you take the next hit on purpose but try to minimize damage taken from it so you don't actually die in the process, wouldn't work. And I don't think this should work on animals.

If this goes in, I want an "eyeball-thump" command to check if folks are -really- dead.

There's no amount of willpower in the world that can avoid flinching at a solid flick on the eyeball.

Of course, we'd also need a critical failure for the eyeball thump:

> You attempt to flick the tall, muscular man's eyeball, but slip and thump your own!
> You flinch involuntarily.

Or maybe it could be a pulse check:

> You attempt to check the tall, muscular man's pulse, but slip and palpate your own carotid!
> Your heart rate is a regular 60bpm 2+.
> Your vision goes black.

My first thought was how suicidal it would be to lie down and pretend death in front of person or persons who want you dead. You're liable to be beheaded, your things taken, and so on. It just seems like one of those ideas that I'd probably never use.

Whenever I see this thread, I can't help but think, "How MMO," and a little part of me dies.  Please, no.  That's just my first problem.

My second problem?  You can't attack dead things in this game.  With the behead proposal above you can ensure something stays dead, sure, but what about people with bludgeoning and piercing weapons?  They should be able to bash your head in or stab you in the throat while you're lying on the ground and make that same assurance to themselves.

My third problem?  If it isn't made possible for bludgeoning and piercing weapons to finish someone off, I see everyone carrying around a slashing or chopping weapon just so they can behead people... and that's ridiculous.  You should be able to ensure that something is dead without carrying around 'your beheading axe.'

Fourth problem?  Every twink PK is going to result in a beheading as soon as this is implemented and even the non-twinks will start beheading people more often when it doesn't make nearly as much sense.

- You can fake your death in MMO's?
- well if the feign death code were real, then you would have no idea that someone faking death were in fact, faking their death. They would simply be dead to you. So beheading them would simply be unneeded. I don't think I've once walked by something and beheaded it before skinning it alive or just walking by it.
- True. mace behead: you squash the head of the tall muscular man. knife behead: you cut the throat of the tall muscular man (but that's not beheading...)
- Yep. Twinks would do that.

hmm... maybe behead should have a waiting time.
twink pk example after a twinky raid:
the body of the tall muscular man is here.
>behead tall
You raise your axe to behead the man.
... six or so seconds later
you behead the body of the tall muscular man.

Yep!

In the original EverQuest, the monk class had the ability to feign death. It was a common tactic for them to pull groups of monsters from a dangerous area, run back to the party, and then use the ability. Better armored party members would then pick up the aggression of the lured beasties, who had (ideally) been fooled by the ruse.
