Is it okay to say Dude in game?

Is it okay to say Dude in game?

Only if you're a dune surfer, silt grinder, yoinker.
"When I was a fighting man, the kettle-drums they beat;
The people scattered gold-dust before my horse's feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back."

Only if you're a halfling.

Quote from: VanthSynthesis, you scare me a little bit.

Is some city slicker pokin' around yer ranch an' spookin' yer critters?

If so, most definitely.
The sword is sharp, the spear is long,
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong.
The heart is bold that looks on gold;
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong.

I voted no.

I think there are plenty of words you can make up for similar use in game.

Unfortunatly I have yet to see "taffer".

"Don' make me come out an' find ye', ya taffer!"

Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

If I ever play a guard of some sort, I'll yell 'Taffer', while looking around and waving my sword in confusion

I tend to steer clear of any slang used by people in real life.

I tend to steer clear of any slang used by people in real life.

Adding to that, I find any "modern" slang or talk used ICly as very jarring and disturbing. Dood, chick, whatever, like totally, gangsta, all that jazz are NOT something I feel belong in the game.

That's my opinion, but it's a firm one.
As of February 2017, I no longer play Armageddon.

Whoever voted yes needs to explain why.. Or were you just trying to be funny? EXPLAIN THYSELF!

GDB is Serious Business.

GDB for life.

I voted yes because I don't consider it slang, its been being used since the 19th century in reference to people that have never lived outside of a metropolitan area, or big city.

If its being used in the slang way, then no... but that same rule can be applied about alot of different terminology.

I'm certainly not one to tell people lists of words they can or cannot use, but it seems prudent to avoid the use of certain words no matter their original meaning, or how accurate it might be used by someone in a given scene.  The question really isn't how you perceive the word, but how the general player base would likely perceive it.  Perhaps we disagree, but I wouldn't expect even 10% of a poll of 50 Armageddon players to return the definition you provide above for the term "dude" if asked in a casual manner.

Certain words have transcended their original meaning and, through use as slang, become the rule rather than the exception. And the potential problem is that they would seem jarring because their use as slang has so heavily influenced my perception of the word.

And example might be the following:
"Grab that faggot and get inside before the guards fine us again."

It's a completely accurate and appropriate use of the word by one definition (a bundle of sticks), but I'd personally find it jarring and imagine other people might as well.  Granted, it's slang definition is much more harsh than "dude", but it's the same basic concept.

-LoD

Exactly, certain words and expressions are extremely jarring to some people. Dude is one of those words for me.

The secret to great RP is having the balls to be weird and the brains to make it eloquent.

I was more or less playing devil's advocate.
I'd have no problem with people using it, but I'd probably never use it myself.

Lol, I've emoted facepalming in the game a few times back in the old days.
I suggest making up your own term to replace 'dude'.

"Ey, nice sword, chub!"

Clans can give stat bonuses and penalties, too. The Byn drop in wisdom is particularly notorious.

The leathery, nappy-bearded guard exclaims, in sirihish:
                                  "Ya fuckin' smuch!"

Seriously, make up words.  I voted "no" because seeing any sort of modern vernacular really, at least for me, jars the entire game-world out of its context.

Yo..Dude for life....but not in Arm... Though I was wondering ifcool is used in a description in game already is it wrong to assume its proper place as a description of something equal to its base meaning? That is cool,  as cool as a cool day or breeze? Or is this treading on that thin ice on a planet without ice?
The funny little foreign man

I often hear the jingle to -Riunite on ice- when I read the estate name Reynolte, eve though there ain't no ice in Zalanthas.

cool is okay to use, but I think it is disturbing to see it used slangy:

So "The dark-eyed man sends a cool glance your way" is fine, but "The dark-eyed man says, "You killed a halfling? Cool." is a bit weird

I tripped and Fale down my stairs. Drink milk and you'll grow Uaptal. I know this guy from the state of Tenneshi. This house will go up Borsail tomorrow. I gave my book to him Nenyuk it back again. I hired this guy golfing to Kadius around for a while.

An alternative to cool I used with my previous pc was 'wet', it caught on pretty well and some of the folks that were around him more often starting using it as well. Dude is WAY too jarring though.
A staff member sends you:
"Normally we don't see a <redacted> walk into a room full of <redacted> and start indiscriminately killing."

You send to staff:
"Welcome to Armageddon."

Armageddon is best when it's actually harsh and brutal, not when we're only pretending that it is.

"dude" is not an insult... so I don't know why some of these insults are being proposed as alternative uses for it.
