Arriving in rooms

Started by Xio, March 07, 2009, 10:26:54 AM

This has bugged me for a long while.
Whenever someone enters a room you get: So-and-so has arrived from the <direction> and you can only see how fast they're moving when they leave. If someone bursts into the area in a dead sprint its something I'd take notice of. If i was a PC soldier in allanak and an elf shoots down the street in the general direction of the rinth, I'd get in his way since chances are (from an RP standpoint) he stole, or committed some crime, and got caught but broke away.
So, long story short, i'd like to be able to see a person's pace when they enter a room.

The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf runs in from the west.
> tell elf Whoa, pardner, speedin' violation!
You exclaim to the fleet, gimlet-eyed elf, in sirihish,
  "Whoa, pardner, speedin' violation!"
> get rope pack
You get a long, mesh-braided rope from your dragon-macramed backpack.
>
The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf exclaims, in 'rinthi-accented sirihish,
  "J diqn'z breap wny laqs!"
> emote shakes out a loop in ~rope and begins to swing it overhead, in ever-widening circles.
You shake out a loop in your long, mesh-braided rope and begins to swing it overhead, in ever-widening circles.
>
The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf looks at you.
> subdue fleet
You subdue the fleet, gimlet-eyed elf, despite his attempts to struggle away.
>
The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf struggles against you.
The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf struggles against you.
> tell fleet (knotting ~rope around !fleet) Quit yer fussin'.
You tell the fleet, gimlet-eyed elf, knotting your mesh-braided rope around him, in sirihish,
  "Quit yer fussin'."
The fleet, gimlet-eyed elf struggles against you and breaks free.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes runs in from the north.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes runs in from the south.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes runs in from the east.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes runs in from the west.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes shouts, in sirihish,
"Surrender, criminal, or face the wrath of the deceitful prince of defilers!"
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes subdues the fleet, gimlet-eyed elf, despite his attempts to struggle away.
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes asks a half-giant soldier of Tektolnes, blinking, in sirihish,
  "Face who?"
A half-giant soldier of Tektolnes tells a half-giant soldier of Tektolnes, blinking, in sirihish,
"Fella we killed last week said it.  Sounded pretty fine."
> tell giant (pointing a finger at !giant, fairly livid) Speeding violation!

From a code perspective:

If an elf is running down the street, chances are he hasn't done anything wrong.* Sneaking on the other hand....

It's still a good idea.

Approach code.

It only works for running. If someone snuck in you either don't notice, or they simply arrive.

Then you shouldn't see people moving sneakily out of rooms. Based on how the code is, it should show them sneaking as they arrive IF you see them arrive. Think of a guy tiptoeing around a soldier while a begging peasant gawks at him hungrily (not to say everyone who's sneaking is tiptoeing like a crazy fool).

I agree with Xio.  It should show move speed for arrivals, no matter the speed, if they are seen.

I agree with this.  When someone runs through a room that I'm in, it always seems like they walked in, and then all of the sudden, ran out.  Suspicious-like.

I'd like to see movement speed shown when both entering and leaving a room as well.

As for sneak, I think it should either tell you the PC was trying to sneak on the way in and the way out, or not at all ... but not half an half.
