Listen <target>

I want to give it its own thread. The idea has to do with listen.

Could the command be changed so that you can focus your efforts and thus gain a bonus on overhearing things? Sit down in a busy restaurant and you'll know that we do this in reality. If I really want to keep track of a nearby table, I kind of have to try to ignore all else. If I just listen, I'll hear things from all over, but it gets complicated to piece everything together.

What if I could target the listen command?

> listen table
You try to listen in on a highly polished table.

>listen bar
You try to listen in on a black-painted bar.

>listen north
You try to listen in on the north.

>listen Amos
You try to listen in on the tall, muscular man.

Now these would give me a boost to conversation at the tables or direction, or even a chance to hear Amos' whispers better, but reduce my ability to hear anything else until I changed target or typed listen on/off.

> talk (tapping the tabletop significantly) I want both kinds.  Bloodburn an' t'other.
Tapping the tabletop significantly, you say, at your table, in sirihish,
"I want both kinds.  Bloodburn an' t'other."
You notice the short figure in a sun-patterned aba listening to you.
The sword is sharp, the spear is long,
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong.
The heart is bold that looks on gold;
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong.

I love the idea.

Oh my god he's still rocking the sandwich.

Would you suggest still having a "Listen on" command so that you would have a chance (albeit lower) with hearing -anything- in the room?

I enjoy the idea, but I wonder about a pair of people whispering, or things happening outdoors.

Yeah, if listen was just 'on', and not targeted, it would act exactly like it does now.
