Other races?  What do you mean by that?

I remember hearing some folks got to play as a gortok, or a rat, and one was a sentient Gaj or something in the distant past.

Vennant doesn't appear to age because he serves drinks at the speed of light. Now you know why there's no delay on the buy code in the Gaj.

Rangers Rule... But you missed what subguild/extended subguilds you did. We'd like to know that too.

subguilds are pretty recent (in comparison with the total age of the MUD), most of his characters didn't have them.

I've been playing for 17 and I still haven't ever played a ranger. My submerged hipster tendencies won't let me play something that good.

You know you are addicted to Arm when... You've played for twenty years.

As of this month, I've now play Arm for 20 years. I'm guess I'm hooked? It was also super slow at work today, so I calculated what race and guilds I'd played over the last 20 years and coverted them into percentages. I'm averaging 2.15 characters per year.

Guilds:

Rangers: 32.5%
Warriors: 16.3%
Sorcerers: 14%
Pick Pockets: 9.3%
Assassins: 7%
Nilazis: 4.6%
Suk-krathi: 4.6%
Psionicists: 4.6%
Merchants: 2.3%
Templars: 2.3%
Burglars: 2.3%
All others: 0%

Races:

Humans: 32.7%
Muls: 18.6%
Elves: 11.6%
Half-giants: 9.3%
Mantis: 6.9%
Dwarves: 6.9%
Halfling: 4.6%
Half-elves: 4.6%
Gith: 2.3%
Other: 2.3%

One day I'm going to play a Whiran...

Really cool how you did that, man.  Would be neat if there were an automated way to see.

Also... you have been playing Arm longer than some players have been alive.  Holy fuck.  I know I have been playing since before some of them could speak. Ummm, shit.

You keep checking the GDB when you should be wrapping presents.
I'm taking an indeterminate break from Armageddon for the foreseeable future and thereby am not available for mudsex.

I remember halflings, never played on but I remember them. I started arm in what '94 or '95. Just wasn't very consistent.

In 2009 there was a role call for Halflings and it was the one role that I really considered storing the fun, lecherous Trader Tarquin for. I submitted an application, received some of the Halfling documentation to flesh the background out and polished it off. Unfortunately I was also switching between ISPs and had some period of internet outage. When I managed to submit the polished application I received this kind response:

Greetings,

Alright.  We are not going to go forward with this application.  You made the cut, and the concept is fine, but we have gone ahead and filled the available open slots in the meantime.

That being said, I will tell you that if one of the newbies gets creamed quickly here, we'll allow you to slip on in.

Having an awesome character to continue playing made me feel happy with that response but when the halflings were gone I was a little upset I wouldn't be able to dust of that character for another try.

I can't believe you've played that long and never played a ranger. Now I'm curious to know what guilds you prefer?

When I was a kid (I started playing at 16) I played burglars and sorcerers pretty much all the time. I tried each of the other elementalists that were available, but didn't really stick with any of them.

These days I mostly play either merchants or warriors. My merchants are really violence prone, and my warriors are really subdued. I like playing characters that are bad at their chosen occupation, but good at things they don't give a damn about.

That's the other reason I don't play rangers. They're good at eevvvveeerrrything.

When you start singing "Merry Githmas" instead of the regular variants.

Rangers really aren't good at everything... Like the help file says. They aren't as good at fighting as warriors, Aren't as good at poisoning as assassins, aren't as good at healing as physicians. Sort of a Jack of all Trades, Master of None type.

Being the 2nd best qualifies them as "good"

Also, rangers actually are the best mundane healer in the game. Subguilds are never as good as main guilds in their respective specialties (except linguists because no main guild specializes in linguistics).

Uh, they're the best riders by their guild doc, the best archers by their guild doc, the best stalkers of the desert. So, yes, they are really good at -everything-.

Next on the hate cycle: are rangers TOO good?

Close quarters combat matters, but for the range game, a ranger can't be beat. It's their -job- to be the best hunters in the desert, and they are THE hands down no contest BEST hunter guild for desert hunting, and some of their skills may even translate into the city as well.

Animals should flee like crazy when they take an arrow. That way hunters would actually have to track and hunt, instead of sitting there popping a stationary object full of arrows.
