You Run off of the Shield Wall

Started by jcljules, July 09, 2008, 04:21:55 PM

Today my connection was lagging as I rode up the north road... I got frustrated and spamwalked a bit. Much to my horror, I came one room short of plummeting to my death. Now, granted, I shouldn't have been spamwalking, but still...

Should it really be that easy to accidentally fall off of a cliff in broad daylight? I know in other RPIs I've played, you need to do something like north ! to move into a fall room. I'm not promoting this for every situation--certain fall rooms could be designated as invisible, and would work as all fall rooms do now. And you wouldn't get the warning at night.

I'm just saying... shouldn't be that easy to accidentally die from a typo. The S and E keys are right next to each other--and shield wall falling doesn't sound fun.

Thoughts?

I believe it's already as you suggested. At least in some places I know it is for sure.

If you're spamwalking -- hence, running without much observation to your horizon -- Then yes. However, as you probably noticed, the Shield Wall has a mechanism built in to prevent that. Other holes and walls can usually be detected by reading room descriptions. I think it's fine how it is.

Yeah, I think they put that in here on Arm quite some time ago... I remember playing when there was no warning.  It was always the cause of much hilarity and tragedy as well.  I remember friends and groups always use to accidentally walk each other off of the shield wall and end up with a huge ordeal... it was quite funny at times.  I almost liked how it was because there was always a sense of intense danger when traveling atop the shield wall.. which is kinda how it should be, especially with harsh winds - blowing sand and dust, etc.  It almost added to the game.  But then again, yeah, I can see the unrealism of just accidentally walking off a cliff.  However, maybe there should be a chance that it would happen anyway if you are in a storm or darkness or something. (or maybe that has been implemented already as well, i dunno)

Oh! I saw some threads about walking off the shield wall--I just assumed there was no safety mechanism. Silly me  :o

But I wasn't going to test it.... so what else to do but assume?

There's a bitch of a hole in a different part of the world that will take your mount although it's relatively easy to climb out of.  No descriptions for it in the room before, has always irritated me.  C'est la vie.

Some holes you can only see from certain directions.

You should be able to push people into holes/off cliffs  :P

Not to derail my own thread.

Who doesn't want to take their patrol for a swim in the silt sea? It's fun for the whole family.

I kind of like that you can fall off things if you're not careful. I like the feeling of vertigo I get when I'm riding along the shield wall. I like that it's embarrassing to way your superiors with the news you've lost your mount falling off a cliff and having to explain how you managed that.
Varak:You tell the mangy, pointy-eared gortok, in sirihish: "What, girl? You say the sorceror-king has fallen down the well?"
Ghardoan:A pitiful voice rises from the well below, "I've fallen and I can't get up..."

Well it did make travel more dangerous/exciting when I thought I would fall...

Gee, thanks guys. Now the world is just that much less harsh for me. :P

What's nerve-wracking?

Driving a wagon that's worth 100 kajillion 'sids along the shield wall, without 100% piloting skill.
