Crafting Question

If you make a simple item, does that help you get better at whatever skill you are trying to learn as much as making a complex item? Like... if I'm a cook, will baking lots and lots of bread help me learn to create delicious tandu steaks eventually?

Not a problem at all.  You can't learn what things you can find out IC without experience, and asking questions like these will either get you a solid answer or the knowledge that this is something you can figure out while in the game.
