Attitudes toward authority

This came up in the "What is Rich?" thread, and I'd kind of like to talk it out further.

• Torture.  Ah, torture.  A favorite method of interrogation for centuries upon centuries, mostly because it proves very effective at letting you hear what you want to hear.  Yet, so often, on Zalanthas, it prove ineffective--I imagine this is because people have conceptions of their characters as strong of mind and body.  Zalanthan humans (and humanoids) certainly are tougher than their Earth counterparts, there's no question about that, but on Earth, we don't have templars and seemingly omnipotent God-Kings to deal with, do we?  I mean, there are always the John McCains and the like who refuse to succumb to torture in any meaningful way for years, but by and large, people submit unless specifically trained to resist it.  What do you think is most appropriate on Zalanthas?  Exactly what sort of person is the kind who really can resist the horrific tortures of which templars are capable?
• Bribery.  Really, it's fun for everyone involved, but let's look at it from a World standpoint.  What does it accomplish?  Who should and shouldn't bribe?  Who should and shouldn't accept bribes?  When is a bribe big enough?  How can authority figures use the accepting (and extortion) of bribes to their advantage in ways not just material?

I love torture. I love bribing. I have attempted to bribe a lot, and been declined n the past. I still try to bribe with booze, spice, 'sid, and sex.
Back onto torture, I used to play my characters like that, but it was never any fun for me or the templar/soldiers involved. So.. I usually just try to squeel like a little kank whore now.

This happened well over four years ago so I'm in the clear.

I've begged a templar not to kill me after I joined a group of criminals. In return he wanted me to keep him informed about the group. Unlucky for me they weren't to active and he ended up killing me cause he thought I was holding out on him, since I always had nothing to report other than the first time, like names and what we where planning.

My emotes are usually nothing spectacular, but when my character starts plucking out eyeballs and putting nuts in a vice, it's pure poetry.

I don't care how well trained you are.... If you get a razor-sharp shard of honed Zalanthan obsidian shoved up your poop chute, you're gonna talk....

Unless your character just so happens to be into that kind of thing....

Or unless said character has already had his/her tongue cut out.

My usual IC attitude towards authority is "scared shitless."

I want to point out that torture isn't just a method of interrogation, but also social coercion/terrorism. Got to make the little people fear you somehow.

I would actually be ticked off if I tortured an individual did not give me the answer I wanted after any length of unpleasant things.

As for bribary, I really think that Templars should start being a bit more active and start "taxing" people that take up their time. That way the peasantry should know what is expected of them next time.

I would like to point out that almost all of my characters have a breaking point... Though I'm going to have fuuuuun when I make an uber-masochist character. pinching? Nope. cutting? makes her purr! splitting her open? Oh gawd, that'll make her moan. I truly believe that would screw up any Templar (and yes, this character -does- exist on another MUD)
