ArmageddonMUD Theme Song

Started by Sephiroto, May 14, 2008, 03:40:23 AM

Greetings all,

With the up and coming of Armageddon Reborn I feel that we should have our own theme song; a song 100% original that we can listen to (optionally) on our homepage.  That being said, I have a friend who composes music and I have requested that he write a track for us.  He has been classically trained and is currently writing the score for a short film.  I have good faith that he could add a desert twist to his music, especially if we give him some examples and inspiration to work with, although I do believe music with a classical sound would be suitable for a noble/political/struggle song.

At this time I'd like to ask the players for inputs that he can use for inspiration i.e., written, visual, and aural material that will help him come up with a song suitable for our homepage.

I imagine the theme music would be along the lines of Ennio Morricone crossed with Ravi Shankar and the occasional classical guitar flourish.

Dear god, please, no music on the Arm home page!
>:(
I really really really hate sites that do that, and might never have tried Armageddon if the main website started blasting midi at me when I checked it out.

Yeah.., gonna agree with Moe here. While most of the playerbase is wildly melodramatic, there's no need to flaunt that fact by putting some equally dramatic song on the main page that blares at you.

If you really wanna do this, just upload it somewhere and provide linkage for the submissions section.

He said "optionally," guys. No need to be so knee-jerk.

I'm gonna go all Gimfalisette on you guys and lay down some numbers.

Well, I know the perfect song to represent Tuluk.

The people scattered gold-dust before my horse's feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back."

To this day, the soundtrack from Conan the Barbarian is one of my favorite fantasy scores. For a more modern approach, the soundtrack from 300 was very cool. If we're continuing with the harsh desert world theme, may I suggest they give the soundtrack to 13th Warrior a listen too? Combine those three into a musical Voltron and you'll have a harsh fantasy song with middle eastern influences that sounds contemporary. ;)

I still think that would be tacky.

Let's just use that song by the composer... uhmm.. I'm blanking John something?  Wasn't Phillip Glass but the song is just like four minutes of silence.  That should be please everyone!

I'm a little surprised by all the Debby Downers about the song. I've been working professionally as a web developer for like 15 years and know that it's generally considered bad form to force music on people when they visit a website. However, for a MUD's website, if the song was by default "off" and you had to click play, would that really be so bad? If the song turns out well, it could help put players in the mood to log in so you could steal their boots. ;)

Shouldn't creativity from our community be encouraged?

The song you are looking for is John Cage's  4'33"

Hilarious.

Me too.

Front page sound widgets are still tacky, though.  Just put an MP3 in the original submissions page.

Of course, I acknowledge that this is all my opinion and for all I know, for every person like me that would have been put off by a musical webpage there are ten that would be all "OMG awesome, I must play this MUD!"

Embedded music is widely understood to be very bad form, and if we go that route, I'll have a very hard time with it. Fortunately, I don't think Morgenes will pick up on this idea.

Agreed.

I am, however, in no way opposed to music submitted by players.  Just don't embed it in a page.  Put it in Original Submissions.  In fact, I'd really love that, as a musician (but not quite composer) myself.

Ahh yes, that is the one.  Thanks PF.  I should have known that but I'm not as big as a music geek as I was several years back.  Still a huge geek though.

Hmm, I do music myself actually.  I mix and do Fruity Loops, I've actually wanted to do this but alas I don't have the $200 software right now.

I think it'd be Frosted Flakes great if it the music he made was upbeat, with some seriously slow drumming in the background to add the sense of impending doom.

You find a rusty, armed landmine and pick it up.

Yes, because when I think of Armageddon Theme Song I think amateurish dance music made on a cheap re-mix software  ;D

This is a cool idea. Whether it plays on the main page or not, it would be super-neat to have an official Armageddon theme song composed just for us.
As for inspiration...

It has a real 'deception and betrayal' theme that I think would fit the game well.

Down with the Sickness.

The opening to that song just feel so Arm-ish to me, I start reaching for my jagged bone scimitar.

The drums..."Can you feel that?"..."Oh shit."
At your table, the badass dun-clad female says in tribal-accented sirihish, putting on a piping voice, incongruous not the least because it doesn't get rid of her rasp:
"'Oh, I killed me a forest cat!' That's nice; I wiped me bum after taking a shit.

Yeah, that's probably the worst song ever written.
