Hair modification?

Started by Ami, May 13, 2008, 11:25:27 AM

Not sure if this belongs here but perhaps there should be coded buyable things that you can wear that indicate how you are wearing your hair?

like

in your hair [A loose ponytail.]

in your hair [A high ponytail.]

in your hair [A pair of high pigtails.]

in your hair [Scraped back.]

etc.

Oooooo....not bad.  Not bad.  I think I like that.
At your table, the badass dun-clad female says in tribal-accented sirihish, putting on a piping voice, incongruous not the least because it doesn't get rid of her rasp:
"'Oh, I killed me a forest cat!' That's nice; I wiped me bum after taking a shit.

I mean, if your desc says that you have a loose ponytail...
You have it in a ponytail for life... (or at least til you req a desc change, which, given only TWO..)

You get my meaning?

xD

But what about the rest of your features? Why just hair? Why hair at all? I think the point of the main description is to give a general idea of what your character -usually- looks like. So he usually has two eyes, he usually has long hair kept in a braid. He usually has exactly one long scar going from his left eye to his chin. He usually has a clean face

But what happens after he gets into a bar brawl? His hair is disheveled, one eye might be swollen shut and not visible to anyone, he might now have several cuts which will turn into scars in a week, and his face is smudged with bar filth.

If you can change hair, then everything else should be changeable too. Or, just try to only use descriptions in your main desc that would outline what your character would -usually- look like, and use emotes and existing things to RP the rest (like a flower worn in the hair - if you emote it, everyone will know that you wrapped the stem around the hair pulled back and is being used as a ponytail holder).

Just hair because I'm biased towards hair.  ;D

Well, if there can be command emotes, why not "wear emotes?"  For example,

> wear ribbon hair {pulling back her hair into a loose ponytail}
You wear a blue ribbon in your hair.

> l me

<worn in hair> a blue ribbon (pulling back her hair into a loose ponytail)

>wear boots {left untied}
You wear a pair of plain leather boots on your feet.

<worn on feet> a pair of plain leather boots (left untied)

I think this qualifies as feature creep; making eq lists downright rococo.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I think the idea is really cool in a vacuum, but I think there's already so much spam flying around on the MUD that this wouldn't really be worthwhile, when it can be simulated well enough when it matters.

Yeah, it does seem a bit overkill, doesn't it?

Just one nice example of what the "point-form" character description could offer.
Lunch makes me happy.

Or a temporary description a la SoI.

Personally, so far as descs, I go for things that are obviously seen on a quick glance, that won't change. Teeth, nose, hair, build

I tend to go after the face more because "the tall, muscular man" can only describe so many Amos'. A face can be covered by a mask, or a hood, and whatnot.

Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

Definately like it. I would prefer that we have a couple lines at the bottom of our description that we can change at will. That way, I can describe my busted lip one day, my ponytail the neck, and then the patchy baldness that I have the next day.

That sounds like a good suggestion for 2.Arm.

Oh my god he's still rocking the sandwich.

I actually like (and have suggested in the past) the idea of being able to put a "drop description" on items that are worn or in your inventory (for peekers and such, with the current inventory system).  The only problem I have with this idea is that it could parse strangely with parsed equipment descriptions, so players would have to be careful of how things were worded.

I like the idea, and I think it should work like scars and tattoos.  You can get them added in some ooc room, and they get covered by wearing things over them.  That would help cut down on extra spam, I think.

It was just something that skimmed across my head one night so I thought i'd just get my idea down here..

It's not something I plotted deep in my mind and am adamant about..

It could be a good idea, it could be a worthless piece of something..

:D

And we're back to the whole TDESC thing again. Still my favourite idea of the year.

MMMM Tdesc

I would like to point out that "tdesc" idea does not address my suggestion whatsoever.

I prefer a TDESC, than a IDESC (Inventory Description).

I don't really feel like I want one like you suggested, PF.

You understand that these things are not mutually exclusive, right?

There is absolutely no reason why you couldn't have both.

"Inventory Description" is a poor term, because it could be used to describe how objects are worn as well.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't use it at all. If someone else does, more power to them. I wouldn't, though.

I wouldn't use a tdesc feature.

I like to write my descriptions in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to tack a sentence onto the end without horribly mangling their flow.

In the muds I've seen that utilise tdesc, it's actually done as a smallish second paragraph below your mdesc, usually around 3-4 lines or less. It isn't actually "attached" to the end of your mdesc.
And I vanish into the dark
And rise above my station

When I started out with Arm, I was confused enough by sdesc, mdesc and ldesc. Adding more "descs" just makes the game more intimidating in exchange for a very limited benefit.

There's no reason why you can't describe your hairstyle using emotes.

very little benefit? Huge benefit, if you ask me. that way if my face is bruised from the sparring match that i just finished, but my hp is full, i don't have to emote bruises to every single bastard that walks into the gaj.

plus, it'd be optional, if a newb wants to ignore it or doesn't learn about it for a year it's not a problem.

tdesc would be an incredible thing to have. of course, it doesn't precisely give the OP what she wants, but I think hairstyles and such could be made part of the change locdesc, i think a hair parlor that sells them would be a little ridiculous.
