Biographies

I just wanted to take a moment to give a mass-kudos to all of you out there keeping biographies updated on your characters. Many of you are really, really gifted writers and tell excellent stories of your characters' lives. It's really helpful on the staff side to be able to see what drives and motivates a character and keep up with what's going on with them. Characters so well described are a pleasure to watch and interact with on this side of things.

With the staff gathering coming up next week things may temporarily slow down a bit, so it'd be a great time to catch up to date on bios. I promise you they get read and appreciated.

Oh that's right.. staff meeting. Krath did I pick a bad time to send in a special application or what.

I'm so bad at keeping bio's. Like.. Really bad. I'll work on that.

I'm terrible too. I try, I do try. I'm usually better at the beggininng of a new character then the longer time progresses and tons of stuff happens and then it just gets to a point where SO MUCH stuff has happened it would take an entire week to write it up. Then I just give up trying.

Blergh.

You're welcome  ;)

Sometimes during solo RP, my character lays down and uses sock-puppets to put on a small comedy skit towards the sky ... just for you.

If you've ever come across mine, I apologise for the numerous typographical errors, bizarro formatting, and incomprehensible content.

... I assumed nobody was reading them but me.

Crap. I actually have to PROOFREAD them now?
And I vanish into the dark
And rise above my station

I think bios are best when they come from someone who just wrote what they wanted to write.  Sure, we read them and love them, but ultimately they're for you

I've taken to using bios as updates. Kind of kills two vestrik with one stone.
Amor Fati

I was planning to bio. But now I feel like if I bio now it'll look forced, when I was really planning to bio spontaneously. Really.
Varak:You tell the mangy, pointy-eared gortok, in sirihish: "What, girl? You say the sorceror-king has fallen down the well?"
Ghardoan:A pitiful voice rises from the well below, "I've fallen and I can't get up..."

With my current character I'm using Bios for the first time.  I'm trying to do them now at one IG month and most are just a paragraph or two telling what he got into and experienced.

You win Armageddon, congratulations!  Type 'credits', then store your character and make a new one

Like thoughts on your character from an OOC perspective, or just for notes and stuff?

Yeah.  That Staff can read whenever they want, without having to go to their email inboxes.

I've been bio-ing like crazy with my last couple of characters.  I tend to have a lot of internal stuff happening with my characters, and I used to try to shoehorn it into reports or work it into thinks, but I finally realized how helpful bio entries can be.  I don't think I used the command once until about a year ago, and since then I've written dozens and dozens of entries.

Even if no one but me ever read them, it would still be worth it.  But it's nice to be reminded, liked with threads like this, that they do get read and enjoyed, on top of just being a great character development tool.

I started to do my bios because you asked so nice.  May I please have a cookie?  I prefer them warm.  I prefer my milk precisely 62degrees farenheight.  Thank you!

Mabye for cookies more people will do bios!

Sometimes during solo RP, my character lays down and uses sock-puppets to put on a small comedy skit towards the sky ... just for you.

Once, I was bored, OOCly. So my Sergeant of Kurac character had these little statues/carvings, found off corpses or abandoned from previous dead Sergeants in boxes. So she played a little "Barbie" and had a little roleplaying scene with her statues. I have the log somewhere, but it went something like this:

Sarge holds her carving-that-looks-sort-of-like-Luir's up, and faces it toward a raptor statue.

Sarge says, in Kurac-accented sirihish, "I am Luirs! I shall destroy you, vile dragon of Allanak!"

Sarge opens her raptor statue.

Teetering the raptor statue over the tabletop toward the carving-that-looks-sort-of-like Luir's, Sarge shouts, in Kurac-accented sirihish, "I AM TEKTOLNES PREPARE TO DIE!"

Sarge places her carving-that-looks-sort-of-like-Luir's into her raptor statue.

After a loud gulp, Sarge says, in Kurac-accented sirihish, "Ooof. Indigestion. Next time I'll just eat Tuluk."

As for bios, I like writing them. I just forget it's an option. I'll add some more to the current PC, promise!

When the think command went in...I hated it...still do.

Feel..Meh, a little better but still rarely used.

I Love Bio...Love it. As Fnord said, kills two vestric with one stone. Since I'm horrid on thinks, feels and even worse on emailing updates to the staff, Bio was a Godsend. Course, Like Fathi I pity the staffers who actually try and read mine...Sorry guys.

I agree, the introduction of Bios is one of the best newly implemented features of Arm.

I use it extensively, and also try and vary the content, depending on my PCs, in terms of content, writing style, depth of detail etc.

I would like to see 2 additions to this feature:
1) The option to Download the Biographies pertaining to a past PC, from the Request Tool, in a zipped format.
2) Submit some/all (depending on check-list) biographies to staff, to be added to the Wiki. This would be useful for those cases where an important PC has passed on, and the player would like the staff to add his lifestory to the PC Wiki.

Once again, Kudos to all the staff members who thought up this idea and implemented it.

PS: It'd be great if one was able to edit/reformat their 1st biography. Sometimes you dont format your background while applying for your PC, and then you're stuck with an unformated biography forever.

Seems like my first bios (i.e. character background) have always lost their formatting.  Dunno if this is a known issue or not--or I could be crazy.

The game auto-formats the text of your background before submission.

I'd like an automated way (e.g. from the game menu) to make final biography entries upon the death of the character.

A nice way to spend some time while waiting for one's next character application to be approved.

Yes, I grudge those handful of hours.  :D

Perhaps this could be implemented in 2.Arm along with a web-based way to enter biographies when not logged in?

Maybe?

Wow... I honestly didn't even know that a feature like this existed.  Damn, really wish I would have known about it with my first PC.  I would have had a book for him, well... going to go research this more and may as well start up with my current PC.
