How 'guard' and 'look' should work hand-in-hand....

Here's what I would love to see...

Look East
(~So-and-so is guarding this area~)
To the east is Roomy Roomness
[Near]
Nothing.

Because it gets annoying when I'm in a place where alot of rooms are off-limits to me and I have no real way of telling.

I agree, that would be nice.

Of course, you could always just try walking into those areas.

Right, but then the guard violently pushes me away. Isn't so nice when people are watching. And then people ask where the Hell I thought I was going.

This seems like a building issue.  That is, builders who put guard NPCs in a room should set their ldesc to get the point across.

Also, there could be a default sdesc for using guard.

For example: The tall muscular man is standing here, guarding the chubby, defenseless merchant.

Or: The tall muscular man is standing here, guarding the north exit.

Good ideas, synthesis.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

Even better.
