Connection problems?

This message is, I suppose, mostly for staff members, but didn't seem to me to merit the importance of the "Ask the Staff" board.

I'm currently at college. This means, unfortunately, that my connection is ungodly slow. I've clocked it running around 500-1200bps. Yes, that's right. BPS. My question is, is there some way to connect and play (perhaps a reductionist scheme, or a proxy solution?) with such a handicap?

Oh, also...I have a sneaking suspicion that port 80 is given higher priority than the others for traffic origination or connection...because my browser isn't anywhere near as slow as other remote applications. Any suggestions?

As always, thanks.
