Let's have it so that the first letter of speaking is capitalized, automatically through code.

Also, let's have it so that the last word of the speaking ends in a period, automatically through code.

I see only benefits in this. No reason why even the worst typers can't be forced to have capitalizations and periods...the lack of which irks me very much.

Edit: If you ended your speaking with an ellipses or a dash...the auto period would be a stupid idea. D'oh!

I like it and I played on a mud that had it. It could be made a toggle for anyone who doesn't want it. Although I never complain or correct people for it, I find it jarring to see...

You can solve the punctuation part by defaulting to a period, only if no other punctuation mark is sent to the game. Otherwise, no one would ever "ask" or "exclaim" anything, since the period would replace the question mark/exclamation point or even follow it, which would be very awkward and as incorrect as no punctuation at all.

Sometimes, I wish this was coded, but there are a lot of times where people have to finish their sentences, because they were cut off by the speech's character limit.

Also, let's have it so that the last word of the speaking ends in a period, automatically through code.

Every sentence doesn't end in a period. The word "Hi" can end with several end points. (Ex: Hi! Hi? Hi. Hi!? and so on)

I think the OP meant to end sentences in periods that didn't already have some form of punctuation. Most people have more common sense than to want this:

The emote system gives a period on the end of the emote if you don't include it in the command, but it won't add an extra one if you do.  If the speech system was coded like this, that would be great.  Also, what every instance of the letter "i" by itself was capitalized?  I can already see that "I'm" and "I'll" might still remain as "i'm" and "i'll" unless there's code to fix specific things like that (something like a substitute).

I like these ideas, but it sounds like eventually we'd have a L33t-speak to English translation system.    Don't bother learning to use the shift key or what punctuation marks mean, the code will take care of it for you.

Make it a toggle then.

This will toggle on when the newbie first logs on to the game.

Veterans can toggle it off if they don't want to resort to typing l337 speak.

When it's toggled off, will it affect everyones outputs, or just your own.

For instance:

BUT veteran has his toggled OFF; does he see say hi.... or say Hi?
