It could happen and we normally would be able to do it with a stick of charcoal or a quill pen and some ink.  We could draw pictures or something, maybe even have a few artists.

Basically, it'd be like 'scribble' but on objects, and it would more or less be permanent, I suppose, depending on the type of object being used to write.

Love it, want it, need it.

Pleeeeeeeaaase?

Paint, charcoal, ink.. paper, canvas.. the possibilities are limitless.

Perhaps drawing-type objects would need immortal approval to make sure no writing is being abused.
I would really love to see this.

I had a habit for a long time of playing artists of various types.  I would occasionally idea up or write in about some skill that would let artists create art (basically, scribbling on paper would allow this as well).

I used to love MUSH for the ability to create objects suitable for my character (they were often artists too), however someone on staff (who will remain nameless) pointed out that they would have to watch every art thing scribbled or created for some doofus who would do something:

The blurry, indistinct man begins creating art:

write
nnnnnsssseenwwwwnnnwwwsnuunn(pot of gold)

You create a nicely framed portrait.

I should also point out that this command (and those like it - scribbling on paper and such) are so important, I think, that I would be willing to handle all their approvals.

LOL.

I love the idea. I love the idea of more player-created stuff, such as you would see on a MUSH.

The age-old argument of potential twinkishment is really, really, really old. I just do not think it will be much of an issue.

Just to validate my view on the cry against twinkishness: Immortals, how many times have you seen people abusing the scribble command since it was put in?

You accidentally snap newbie into useless pieces.

Awesome idea.. one of my first characters tried to be an artist and well, when I bought a pen and a box of paints and some canvas.. I was very dissappointed.
A staff member sends you:
"Normally we don't see a <redacted> walk into a room full of <redacted> and start indiscriminately killing."

You send to staff:
"Welcome to Armageddon."

The main argument isn't about its abuse from the perspective that someone will draw "Go kill that guy" on it.

The main argument is that we'll end up with a dozen artists who create perfect masterworks, regardless of their IC justification for their skill or actual time invested in the art.

And this happens. Now. For different professions based on non-coded things.
nless explicitly stated, the opinions of this poster do not necessarily represent all staff.

Halaster the Shroud of Death sings, in unnaturally gutteral sirihish:
    "S
     T
     F
     U"

"The main argument is that we'll end up with a dozen artists who create perfect masterworks, regardless of their IC justification for their skill or actual time invested in the art."

Only thing I can think of to remedy the situation is to make a new subguild "Artist", need it to be included in your background, or have it somehow tucked in with the "Bard" subguild.

Ha!  HA!

I was honestly just about to post about a "Painter" Subguild, and of course as luck would have it, this topic seems right on the money.  Writing is a wonderful form of in game expression, however it is limited quite strictly to the upper class.  As exclusive as it is, those of us who have used it in game know how awesome it can be - limitless potential for creation and historical documentation.  The way I see it, art is just as important a part of history and there really should be a way for players to create their own.

I would love to see the Zalanthan Bosch equivalent...This crazy, warped painter who is so gifted that he is comissioned by the Templarate to paint propaganda and images glorifying the city state.  But in a clever, masterful way, he uses the oportunity to really express his genius.

When considering the fact that artists back then were MUCH more disciplined than they are now and often began painting under the tutelage of masters at a very young age, I wouldn't be upset with seeing the majority of in game artists produce exceptional works.  I honestly think that if somebody wants to play a shitty artists, they will.  But a bunch of Master Painters wouldn't bother me.  Hell, we'd -have- art!

To handle this codedly and with a certain amount of trust, simply make it the first Karma required sub-guild.  Lets say for now, two or three karma points, and you can become a painter.  It would work almost exactly like writing but perhaps with different message triggers and what not.

-This sandcloth canvas is roughly two chords in length and is wrapped around a wooden frame and bound with bone nails so that the fabric remains taut.
There is an image on the surface
The medium is Paint

And if the staff is still concerned with the whole issue of a sudden abundance of Master Painters...

A) These are PCs, not NPCs not VNPCs.  We are the main characters on the vast stage that is Zalanthas.  IG painters should be memorable in some way.  They should stick out, even if they are the worst painters on Zalanthas, which some RP hero will doubtlessly play.

B) Make some sort of flag that pops up when a character creates a painting so that it can be quickly reviewed.  Or perhaps when the character terminates the painting description with ~, it is automatically sent to the staff.

Overall, I think painting really needs to be put in.  I remember one character of mine had this dream of constructing his own building.  He went to Tenneshi, and he had saved up plenty of money from previous jobs and clans.  The project was green lighted for the most part, but when I wanted to draw up IG blue prints, the staff never created the objects with the described sketches.  Its just a pain in the ass.  A coded skill and sub guild would be perfect, just make it require a bit of karma.

If you want to play an artist, roleplay practicing on your own, and then trying to get some kind of noble sponsorship.  Once you work for the noble/have their sponsorship, then you can submit it to the staff, and i'm sure they would be more than happy to look over and approve them when they had the time.

Well, it's more of an idea of letting people draw badly-described pictures and scribblings(hint, hint) on paper, than turning everyone into artists.
Like... making a "wanted" poster...

devilish grin

Shady Tavern [NE]
This bar appears to be very shady in its dealings.
A few shady people are here.
A criminal is here.
The burly barkeep is here, cleaning some illegal-looking mugs.

>l parchment
Blah blah piece of paper blah blah.
>ep pen
>scribble parchment
[blah blah, etc]
>l parchment
This is a very crudely drawn picture of a man, appearing in middle age and having no facial hair.  His hair is short and swept back, eyes narrowed in a show of anger.  There is a knife drawn under his head, dripping with some substance.
>em slaps ~parchment onto a wall, nailing it in with a bone nail.
>drop parchment Nailed down tightly, ~ hangs from a wall.

If you had paint, you could color his eyes and hair, further increasing the chance that he may accidentally fall off the Shield Wall, plummeting to the ground below...

...or you could make an elaborate map describing the location of Muk Uteps undergarments.. or Tektolnes' sekrit hidden treshurez.

If you are a 'rinthi, something so fun as drawing a comical picture of a widely-known templar, slipping it onto the bar, and darting away shouldn't be restricted to high karma players.

And I'd hate to pester the immortals every time I feel like drawing something.

I wasn't talking about the original topic.  I was talking about the painting tangent.  Anywho, yeah, but people really would use it to make masterful art, even if it was just scribbled.

I say we -need- this. Not for pictures, but so people can use symbols to write the notes I know they should be able to. Namely they will be able to tally things, chart things and mark off days. Their is already a developed calendar, and people usually know what day of the week, day of the month and month that it is. It's science to the average person.

In the case of art, I have an idea for a way this could work.

Doofus the art-school dropout is here.
>

Doofus begins a piece of artwork.
>

Doofus drops a large painting.
>l painting

A [large] [painting] rests here, [showing a scribbled picture of a stick-Bynner on kankback]
Ub3rBarde looks upon this as a [very low quality piece of art.]
>craft charcoal paper into medium charcoal sketch

You begin to create a piece of artwork.
>

What would you like the description of your sketch to be? Enter a string to continue, RETURN to abort.
>depicting a beautiful, shady grove of agafari at midnight.

You have finished your artwork.
>l painting

A [medium-sized] [charcoal sketch] is here, [depicting a beautiful, shady grove of agafari at midnight]
Ub3rBarde looks upon this as a [high quality piece of art.]
>kill doofus

You [b]SMACK[/b] Doofus the art-school dropout with your charcoal rod.

The parts in brackets show the different variables, depending on the objects being used to craft, what the artist wants the artwork to depict, and what Ub3rBarde (or a VNPC or NPC that is important in the art world) thinks of it, depending on the skill of the artist. (Of course, the brackets wouldn't be shown in the game, I just used them to explain)

So, if it was a shitty artist, Ub3rBarde will look upon it as a shitty painting.
If it's the Mona MantisHead, Ub3rBarde will look upon it as a beautiful work of art.

Thoughts?
