Gods!

I never thought that a person could know so much about everything, krath-damn was I wrong. Everytime I load up the gdb I see the same name all the way down the row for each new post. At first it rather annoyed me and even has me skipping reading much of the gdb now (I'm just iritable lately I guess) but than I got to thinking...someone with this much knowledge should either be a used vacume salesman or a god. =)

Yeah... Damn Tony and John. Worst of is more often they have not a slightest little thing to add to the discussion... SURE you might be able to understand them, but when they are speaking gibberish nothings... Does that really stand well for YOU!?

If we're going to talk about the mighty gods of the GDB, you simply must mention Angela Christine. Goddess of All Things Nasty, perhaps? Lady of Things Best Left Unsaid?

Lets just not call AC a goddess or lady or queen of anything... She's already great enough with the title AC which just stands for so many things... *SIGH* 8)

I was not impolite, thank you very much. Gosh. I'm certainly not a finger-wiggler either.

I didnt mention the name(s) of those who inspired me to write this post because I'm not one to hurt someones feelings ;)

But AC wasnt one of them heh, I actually look forward to seeing her name by a thread and it inspires me to read it. I've actually got a cut and paste collect of all her threads and some pictures of her cat in a dark closet in my basement where I go to pray for guidance. =)

The frustration came to me because, basicly, I don't read every single post when there have been a ton of new ones since I last checked the gdb. I look for topics and/or names of posters that intrest me and when I only see one name -all- the way down the line...it just got under my skin.

I ment no harm to anyone by this post, sorry if anyone got offended.

No offence Lonley. I imagine it would get frustrating (and I tend to post in bulk instead of a few here and there, so it would make it even more frustrating for you ;)).

Oh, and creeper. Don't be so damn offensive you finger waggler.

John, who knows creeper knows his joking, but wonders if everyone else does.

Lonely,

Do not feel bad one bit. I do exactly the same. Scroll down and look who posted on what thread then read it. I have found that many posts get into rat-holes that have nothing to do with the original idea/question/coment. So I have started to skip posts that are longer than one page (at least not ones that I am not posting to   )

I don't suppose anyone looks for little 'ol me, huh? *Sniff sniff*. The God of Newbs that Like To Pretend They Know What They're Talking About? The Master of Random Capitilization? (Just look at how I type EMOTE. I even do it IG). Yeah, probably not... I never have anything relevant to say, unless it's about aphids or Final Fantasy VII.

You know, I just looked down the message list...

The same name in "last post" for all but two. No offense, but I think someone needs to take a hint - I too am finding myself skipping certain persons' posts. There isn't a way to block or ignore them, is there?

I'm afraid to say there isn't. And look at the dates on those posts as well please. Code-wise it would be too difficult as well as logically-wise.

I've opened myself up to people saying "stop posting as much" and everytime no-one would say "yes, please cut down". I even made a poll. However I am cutting down (not motivated by Hunter's post) and you'll notice I haven't posted anything in the Byn Vs militia thread either. Why? Cause I don't know anything about that.

I personally PM'd Hunter to let him know I didn't take it personally (also I don't take you personally Irritated, even if yours was worded less politely and you went Anon), and he said that he had just had bad day, and he was venting.

Again, no hard feelings, and I'm sorry for annoying you.

[EDIT]: Again, if my posts annoy you for whatever reason, feel free to PM me (don't e-mail I'll think your porn and delete you :P). I won't take it personally and I wont' tell anyone that you PM'd me. Feedback is crucial for RPing, and if I am annoying a substantial amount of people, I will cut down.

[EDIT]: Okay, okay. I just saw that I _had_ posted in the Byn Vs Everyone else thread, but I was answering a question. I tend to answer questions, whether it be about age, something previously said, or something about the game. Sorry, but I'll never change this habit.

I find myself skipping many posts because of how lengthy they are.
I'm afraid some of you are terribly long-winded.
I'd really involve myself in more discussions  if they were just that -
brief statements making up a conversation, instead of a series of lectures.
If a post is several paragraphs, or takes up more than the screen, I may skim it, but I generally skip it all together.

I actually find long posts REALLY interesting. True I might avoid 'em for a bit, but I always read 'em and really like them.

I know not everyone is like that so I summarise my posts either at the start or at the end for ease. Just depends on which style you prefer.

My problem with long posts is how difficult they make it for ideas and dialogues to continue from earlier submissions.

If Mudder A brings up an interesting point Friday night,
and Mudders B, C, and D post 5 paragraphs each without mentioning A's point on Saturday morning,
it's unlikely and awkward then for Mudder E, who logs on late Saturday, to pick up the conversation with A that is now pages back

makin' sense?

Slipshod... If you feel that way, your obviously insecure about where you belong on the GDB.   Hehe.

Well, I sometimes TRY to summarize any long posts, or at least lump alot of new ideas in a last paragraph... The ones that I feel are important. Knowing people skim most of it then read the bottom half. Yeap yeap. You don't like my posts, but I know you at least skim through them, thinking this at least gives me something to use against him in court.   Haha.

Well, I acctually well skip posts because of length... But I think most of them tend to be Rindan's(Her/His posts tend to be really wordy and you have to chew on them abit. Like she brought alone a dictionary and thesaraus with him/her), but thats only on the REALLY long ones.   Hoho.

Creeper who's out of "H" and Vowel couplings that sound like funky laughs. Hihi??? I don't think so... Hyhy? Even worse.

DO you realise how ironic that is Creeper. You used a thesuarus for that post.

Anyway. Don't feel insecure, I myself do it ALL the time. There's nothing wrong with re-bringing up a point no-one else has touched on since the original post.

But then again, maybe that why people find me annoying.

Well, I'll bring up the original point then.... gods
There does seem to be a lot of self-righteousness on the GDB, and it does chap my hide
I really think absolute authorities on a matter are the only ones who should post sermon-style.  And then only to end a conversation, by putting doubts and speculations to rest.
Otherwise, I'd like to see one or two issues discussed at a time.. with brief posts.  It would make for nice round-table discussions.

By the way - the 'insecure' talk doesn't really apply, since it's based on the assumption that I would be Mudder E in that hypthetical I posed.  Actually, it grieves me from Mudder A's p.o.v.

I will confess, I tend to skip through long threads. I also avoid threads that look to be rehashes of frequently ocurring topics - which is why I'd skipped this one before now, since I thought it was Yet Another Discussion of Religion on Zalanthas.

People have different posting styles, and different pet peeves as well. If you're interested, here's a slightly edited version of the rules that we use on the staff discussion board (written by Nessalin):

1) Please be Concise. The IDB is seeing more traffic all the time making it harder to keep up with when there are unnecessarily long posts on it. We're not asking people to limit their content, but cook it down a little first. Sometimes, with longer posts, those of us with limited time or attention spans may find ourselves skipping it. If your post wanders into the lengthy, it is highly suggested that at the beginning, you include a 2 or 3 line synopsis. This will help your readers determine whether or not they need to read it thoroughly, and will greatly enhance your chances of your idea or suggestion being heard.

2) Capitalization & Spelling. Everyone makes typos here and there, and by no means do I expect people to run everything they post through a spell checker before hand. But the chances that people will take your post seriously is affected by how serious you seem to have been about writing it. "i am gongi to be on this weekedn, if anyone is around." compared to "I am going to be on this weekend if anyone is around." are likely to be taken with two different levels of interest. It shows a lack of respect for your audience and implies that you don't take your own post seriously.

3) Keep Threads on Topic. It is just as easy to create a new thread on the IDB as it is to add a post to an existing one, you click a single button either way. Please do so. A. It makes it hard to find old posts when they're nested in off-topic threads B. It can kill discussion on the thread-topic in progress as people get side-tracked

4) Signal to Noise Ratio. There's room to have some fun on the boards, but their primary purpose is to keep everyone informed and up to date. Try to label your post with a title that does provide some information about the content, and to keep extraneous posts to a minimum.

I'm not quite sure, though, what some of the contention here is about? People posting too much? People speaking as though they're authorities when they're not? If people are posting just to boost their post count, we can remove that feature from the board.

What got me frustrated (and it was a bad day) was that all the way down the line I saw a single name and many of the posts either went off topic or just repeted a previous post. I'm not sure if it is for posting numbers, "I posted 5000 times this week, I'm L33T!" type of thing or just an honest attempt to get their opinion and thoughts heard.

I tend not to post too often and when I do I try to keep them very short. Maybe, since it was a bad day, I just got frustrated easy and didnt understand (or care) about someone elses 'style'.

Again, I never ment to offend anyone which was why I left out names. This type of post alone, a 'bitch post', isnt exactly my kind of topic.

Quote from: "Sanvean"If people are posting just to boost their post count, we can remove that feature from the board.

I actually don't care about people posting for posting's sake unless it clutters up the topic at hand with a bunch of barely coherent subthreads.  If someone wants to post a million times to have a big number under their name I see no harm in that, so long as they are contributing when they post or reply.

My biggest concern about post count is that it, IMHO, was only started recently and could mislead new players who might infer veteran status from a high post count.

Again, there's nothing wrong with new or relatively new players having a high post count.  More power to them, the board needs the new blood.  But when that post count makes someone think I know more about a given topic than...say...Krelin (who if memory serves has been playing off an on for like a decade) just because I have a higher post count...then its a disservice to our new player.

This is not to say I might not have a point of view that Krelin or that Krelin can't be wrong.  But to reiterate, a post's validity shouldn't be affected by how many times the person replying has hit the 'post reply' button.  I know if I was new  to this game I'd assume that someone with more numbers had been around longer.

I think that asking someone or requesting for them not to post more often regardless of what they are posting kinda goes against the spirit of a message board.  As long as the poster is at least attempting to contribute to the thread and keeps the replies of forced cuteness to a minimum or relegated to the OOC forum, then I hope they post as much as they are able.

Actually, Rindan's posts, while sometimes lengthy, are usually very clear. I have no problem with a lengthy post if it's well worded and concise.

Other people's posts, while I won't mention names, are simply long rambles that wander all over the place and have to be read two or three times to get sense out of it.

(Like mine.;))

I tend to agree with Delirium. I always feel that Rindan's posts are well informed and thought out.
Varak:You tell the mangy, pointy-eared gortok, in sirihish: "What, girl? You say the sorceror-king has fallen down the well?"
Ghardoan:A pitiful voice rises from the well below, "I've fallen and I can't get up..."

I'd be interested to hear what people think of my posts. I normally just voice my opinion on a topic that sounds interesting, and might reply two or three times if the topic continues to be interesting (Which is rare for me, I have the attention span of a gnat). My posts are often long and rambling, but I think that balances out by me only posting two or three times a day, tops.

So I'm wondering, which is more irratating... Some one who posts constantly, or some one who posts occasionally but seems to be writing a book each time?

I've also noticed that most of the discussions I start rarely get more then a handful of replies. So, instead of starting a new thread or asking a question, I check around a bit more then I used to, trying to see if there was already an answer.

And finally, for a random comment, I normally just look at recently used topics, that is, the top two or three on the list. And also, I don't like to read ones that are even more then a page long. I always make sure to read all the previous posts before making a point (So as not to restate anything) but what can I say... Two pages of arguing is a lot of reading! So I either pop into a new post, or rarely pop in at all. Is anyone the same way?

I admit, lately I've been skipping posts that seem to be repeating themselves a lot (i.e. the various stat posts). Also, if I do make a long post, I'll try putting in bold at the start the gist of the message. But I'll keep Sanvean's guidelines in mind as well. ;)

Quote from: "FiveDisgruntledMonkeysWit"I'd be interested to hear what people think of my posts.
I don't look at someone's name and think "they post X way" which is why I'm surprised at everyone liking Rindan's posts (not cause I hate them. But I don't know what they're like).

I judge a post on it's content, not it's length nor it's poster. But I do understand people tend to skip long posts.

I am the same way, yes.  It makes the difference between me avoiding the GDB and actively participating.

And to address Sanvean's earlier post..
QuoteI'm not quite sure, though, what some of the contention here is about? People posting too much? People speaking as though they're authorities when they're not?
-Here are some general reasons why I think long/excessive posting is counter-productive.
1. The poster loses sight of the original topic(s)
2. The poster beats earlier topic(s) into the ground like a dead horse
3. The poster brings up a number of off-topic points that would be better
off in different posts under an altogether new thread.

I think that guide Nessalin wrote is a great model for the posting populating here as well.
About authority - Immortals are the most likely to have definitive answers on a matter.  The rest of us are, largely, just throwing around opinions.  It bothers me when some posts get 'preachy'.
Now, I hope -I'm- not posting too excessively on this topic, but I do have a strong opinion.
